The Wife’s Tale is an intimate memoir, both of a life and of a country. In prose steeped in Yetemegnu’s distinctive voice and point of view, Aida Edemariam retells her grandmother’s stories of a childhood surrounded by proud priests and soldiers, of her husband’s imprisonment, of her fight for justice all of it played out against an ancient cycle of festivals and the rhythms of the seasons. She introduces us to a rich cast of characters emperors and empresses, scholars and nuns, Marxist revolutionaries and wartime double agents. And through these encounters she takes us deep into the landscape and culture of this many-layered, often mis-characterised country and the heart of one indomitable woman. Aida will be in conversation with poet & AES trustee Chris Beckett. She will also read extracts from the book and answer questions from the floor. Free admission!!!

Each year, more than 2,500 exhibitors participate in CanGift fairs across Canada displaying hundreds of thousands of products from international name brands to unique, local and handmade goods. As trade-only events, our fairs admit only qualified buyers who make purchasing decisions for their stores and come ready to buy. Many spend the bulk of their year’s budget at our fairs and do not attend any other wholesale gift show.
In the talk show, the objectives are to encourage participants especially those with college degrees and well-established careers to use their experience and skills to do the following:

Ethiopia’s scribes have been making manuscripts since Late Antiquity, and the practice is still alive, though rarer, today. Dr Sean Winslow (Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz) will introduce the Ethiopian scribal tradition, its history and current practice, illustrated with photographs and video from his fieldwork, interviewing scribes and others involved in book production and trade.
A number of contemporary Ethiopian manuscripts, along with tools used in making the books, will be on display and available for inspection.
The first Ethiopia Railway Summit will be held at Sheraton Addis with a focus on railway transportation infrastructure development, operation & financing. This high-level event will provide a unique platform for international railway technology companies, investors & financial institutions to engage with Ethiopian decision-makers on short-term & long-term cooperation possibilities.

A crowd favorite and authentic celebration of the people of African descent in the Caribbean, First Fridays: Labor Day “Carnival” Edition returns with steel pan drummers, moko jumbie, mass camp, and a curated selection of vendors ready to celebrate the culture and special traditions of the West Indies. Dhalimu from Dhali’s Closet, our host for the night, along with DJ Don, DJ Hard Hittin Harry and DJ JP, and live performers will be there to bring down the house in this community celebration of Carnival. Come dressed and ready with flags to proudly represent your country!
