An architectural look at the famed Waldorf Astoria
About this event
When the Waldorf Astoria opened its doors on Park Avenue in 1931, the new building became an instant New York City icon. The world’s first skyscraper hotel has been home to celebrities, host to world leaders, and the site of famed cultural events.
Designed by renowned architects Schultze & Weaver, the American Art Deco building has been renovated repeatedly in the intervening years, sometimes altering the original architecture. Owner Dajia Insurance Group and architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill are undertaking a comprehensive and highly complex restoration of the exterior and the landmarked interiors.
Speaker Frank Mahan is a principal at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Director of its Adaptive Reuse Practice. He has led the successful redevelopments of icons like the Waldorf Astoria and the James A. Farley Post Office. Mahan has been recognized with the AIA Young Architects Award and named to Building Design+Construction’s 40 Under 40 list.
This is an in-person event. Your health and safety are our top priorities and we are following all CDC and New York City guidance. All guests must have received a COVID-19 vaccine. Proof of vaccine (CDC card or photo, Excelsior Pass, CLEAR Health Pass, or other digital record) as well as a photo ID will be required. Masks are also required.
RSVP does not guarantee entry. Doors open to the public 15 minutes before the event. Please arrive early to check in.
Our coat check is limited. Please do not bring any large bags or backpacks.

A FUTURE FUNK PARTY
About this event
Yoi Toki – Our New Future Funk/Vaporwave Party Returns to Schimanski
Thank you to everyone who came out to the recent Yoi Toki party and making it such a fantastic night. We’ll be posting video and photos shortly. In the meantime, we’ll be returning to the excellent Schimanski BKLYN on Friday April 29 with another edition.
Future Funk is a Vaporwave subgenre that emerged around 2010 (championed by artists such as Yung Bae, Night Tempo and Macross 82-99). It draws from 70s disco, disco house, vaporwave and Japanese City Pop influences, resulting in a sound that is upbeat, insanely danceable and very funky. Future Funk’s aesthetic is a nostraligic mix 90s anime and ’80s consumer culture. The fact that it is derived from Vaporwave goes some way in explaining the familiar and yet strangely unique sound and visuals
With DJs Valentine, Faith In The Glitch & Merlin.

_ _ _
Korea in the 21st Century is defined by a convergence of culture, art, and technology. The country’s energetic creation of new cultural content is unmatched in the global sphere, with creative minds constantly at work at the intersection of past and future, tradition and cutting-edge technology, fine art, music and more. To see evidence of this success, we need only look at BTS—a band that has surpassed the usual definition of the word to become an international phenomenon founded on diversity—and Parasite, the first Korean film to win the Palme D’Or at Cannes as well as the Academy Award. These two recent examples have instilled a sense of confidence in the Korean creative industries as part of the global market.
Organized by the Korea Creative Content Agency, the exhibition will be held in New York and Washington DC, extending the recent successful series Korea: Cubically Imagined, which took place in Paris, Hong Kong, Moscow and Beijing. The exhibition includes seventeen distinctive Korean Wave presentations at the forefront of the nation’s creative talent.
The show’s various immersive environments connect digital technologies such as 3D, AI, and 5G with new spatial dimensions including AR, VR, and Metaverse. By bringing together different genres and stories with the help of technology, each presentation aims to explore new dimensions of human creativity.
Of particular note are the virtual spaces that serve as the backdrops to DOPE and DNA – from the online stages of [BTS MAP OF THE SOUL ON:E]; the virtual spaces and sounds recognizable from Director Bong Joon-ho’s film Parasite; the National Museum’s Royal Procession with the People; d’strict’s FLOWER and JUNGLE environments; and Yiyun Kang’s Projection mapping work Beyond the Scene.
Above all, this exhibition generates new narratives by transcending outdated boundaries between East and West, tradition and innovation, music and movies, art and architecture, and past and future, reminding us to consider the common values of humanity based on Korea’s historical, cultural, and social heritage.
_ _ _ _ _
We look forward to seeing you.

THE FILMS
The Janes
Tia Lessin & Emma Pildes | US | 101 mins
In the spring of 1972, police raided an apartment on the South Side of Chicago. Seven women were arrested and charged. Using code names, blindfolds, and safe houses to protect their identities and their work, they built an underground service for women seeking safe, affordable, illegal abortions. They called themselves Jane. Facing off against the mafia, the church, and the state, the Janes exhibited unparalleled bravery and compassion for those most in need. Courtesy of HBO Original Documentaries.
preceded by Choices
Erica Rose & Jess Jacobs | US | 17
An unexpected pregnancy forces 27-year-old Zazie Clarke to make a choice… or in this case, both choices. In parallel universes, Zazie’s decisions to become a mother and to have an abortion force her to finally face adulthood, finding vulnerability and a deeper connection to the women in her life than she ever knew was possible.
PERFORMER
beccs
Hailed as one of NYLON Magazine’s “favorite cool girls”, a John Lennon Songwriting Finalist, and an “indie-pop vocalist of astonishing candor” by the HuffPost, beccs confronts and heals audiences with a soul-stirring voice that is as dynamic as it is vulnerable. The alternative pop artist has been critically acclaimed by Refinery29, NYLON, AudioFemme, PopDust, Huffington Post Queer Voices and featured on The BUILD Series with Monet X Change (RuPaul’s Drag Race) for her queer-inclusive Christmas hit “Before This Christmas Ends”. Holding up a mirror to herself and society at large, beccs’ songwriting has been awarded by the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, the International Songwriting Competition, Coffee Music Project, and more. Her majestic indie pop single “Such A Love”, self-produced in quarantine with Godfrey Furchtgott and mixed by Alex Epton (Arca, FKA Twigs, Bjork), calls out our self-aggrandizing ways and calls to action a self-sacrificing love to save what’s left of the land and the sea. beccs is recording her sophomore EP which is set to release in 2022.
