A rich and riveting debut spanning four generations of Eastern European Jewish women bound by blood, half-hidden secrets, and the fantastical visitation of a shapeshifting stranger over the course of 100 years.

An ambitious, delirious novel that tangles with queerness, spirituality, and generational silence, City of Laughter announces Temim Fruchter as a fresh and assured new literary voice. The tale of a young queer woman stuck in a thicket of generational secrets, the novel follows her back to her family’s origins, where ancestral clues begin to reveal a lineage both haunted and shaped by desire.

Ropshitz, Poland, was once known as the City of Laughter. As this story opens, an 18th century badchan, a holy jester whose job is to make wedding guests laugh, receives a visitation from a mysterious stranger—bringing the laughter the people of Ropshitz desperately need, and triggering a sequence of events that will reverberate across the coming century. In the present day, Shiva Margolin, recovering from the heartbreak of her first big queer love and grieving the death of her beloved father, struggles to connect with her guarded mother, who spends most of her time at the local funeral home. A student of Jewish folklore, Shiva seizes an opportunity to visit Poland, hoping her family’s mysteries will make more sense if she walks in the footsteps of her great-grandmother Mira, about whom no one speaks. What she finds will make her question not only her past and her future, but also her present.

Electric and sharply intimate, City of Laughter zigzags between our universe and a tapestry of real and invented Jewish folklore, asking how far we can travel from the stories that have raised us without leaving them behind.

Temim Fruchter is a queer nonbinary writer who was raised in a Modern Orthodox Jewish household. She holds an MFA in fiction from the University of Maryland, and has received first prize in short fiction from both American Literary Review and New South; she is a 2020 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer’s Award winner. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Leo Baeck Memorial Lecture with Atina Grossmann @ Center for Jewish History 15 West 16th Street New York, NY 10011 United States
Jan 23 @ 6:30 pm

About the Lecture

In the 64th Annual Leo Baeck Memorial Lecture, historian Atina Grossmann (Cooper Union) will examine the ambivalent, paradoxical, and diverse experiences, emotions, and memories of Jews who found refuge from National Socialism and the Holocaust in India and Iran after 1933. Always shadowed by the emerging European catastrophe, uprooted Jews were also precariously privileged as white Europeans in non-western, colonial or semi-colonial societies. An extensive collection of family correspondence and memorabilia extending from wartime Nazi Berlin throughout the global diaspora of German Jewry as well as archival, literary, visual, and oral history sources illuminates refugees’ everyday lives in the changing context of interwar fascination and contact with the “Orient,” global war against fascism, anti-colonial independence movements, and gradual revelations about the destruction of the European world they had escaped.

Endowed by Marianne C. Dreyfus and Family, the descendants of Rabbi Leo Baeck

Please note that by registering for this event, you are opting into communications from the Leo Baeck Institute.

Film Synopses
DUST TO LIGHT is an award winning short documentary about what is really going on under the surface when we are cleaning. The film listens as four Zen & Tea practitioners reflect on the transformative process of cleaning when it is approached as a meditation rather than burdensome chore. TRAILER

PURE LAND is a moving and thought-provoking portrait of two Japanese immigrant Buddhists in New York. The film centers around Miki, a 55-year-old ex-banker Buddhist missionary, and Toni, a 91-year-old wife of a Jewish atheist. In search of her final path to salvation, Toni invited Miki to move into her and her husband’s home four years ago. Since then, Toni has been single-heartedly seeking one thing above all else—a peaceful mind. Through the deeply personal stories of the two Buddhists, PURE LAND explores the universal theme of finding inner peace amidst the challenges of life, and the power of human connection in overcoming adversity.

About Taste: My Life Through Food: Before Stanley Tucci became a household name with The Devil Wears Prada, The Hunger Games, and the perfect Negroni, he grew up in an Italian-American family that spent every night around the table. He shared the magic of those meals with us in The Tucci Cookbook and The Tucci Table, and now he takes us beyond the recipes and into the stories behind them.

Taste is a reflection on the intersection of food and life, filled with anecdotes about growing up in Westchester, New York, preparing for and filming foodie films Big Night and Julie & Julia, falling in love over dinner, and teaming up with his wife to create conversation-starting meals for their children. Each morsel of this gastronomic journey through good times and bad, five-star meals and burnt dishes, is as heartfelt and delicious as the last.

Potluck encouraged this month! Feel free to bring something from the book! The event location is a private residence and will be sent out to attendees on the day of. If you have questions, feel free to email us at uvanyc@uvanyc.org.

This event is #open to all alumni, parents, and friends. #BookClub
