Sound Meditation (often known as ‘sound healing’) is the practice of listening to soothing sounds to reach profound states of clarity and relaxation. It opens up deep meditative states that are usually unreachable without considerable effort.

During the event, participants (mostly laying down) are bathed head to toe in sound— it’s a very hypnotic, ethereal experience.

You will come away with a clear mind, and a deeper appreciation for the wonder of sound. We strongly recommend this event for people who have trouble meditating, or feel like they just “can’t get there.” Give this a try 🙂.

Sound Meditation Presents promotes the practice of using sound as a way to affect physical health and conscious awareness.

Jessica Hische, David Brandon Geeting, Zoë Pulley, Vanilla Chi: Tickets now available for September’s Nicer Tuesdays in New York!

A lettering artist, photographer, graphic designer and illustrator walk into a theatre. What do you get? A brilliant event!

Already worried about the end of summer? Us too. But we’ve got something to soothe your post-summer blues: another fantastic Nicer Tuesdays event in New York!

This time round we’ll be welcoming the lettering artist extraordinaire Jessica Hische to the stage for a Q&A, to chat about her work for some of the biggest cultural moments in film, books and more. Before that, we’ll enjoy talks from illustrator Vanilla Chi, known for her beautifully ethereal and otherworldly work; photographer David Brandon Geeting, master of the modern portrait and still-life; and designer Zoë Pulley, whose stunning and thoughtful work spans multiple disciplines and media, with an extra special eye for editorial design. Our event partner MPB will also be giving you the chance to win a camera at September’s event! Enter the raffle on site for a chance to walk away with a Sony ZV-E10.

Jessica Hische

When it comes to letters, few do it better – or have more expansive reach – than Jessica Hische. Widely seen as the 21st century’s answer to reviving traditional hand-lettering styles, modifying them for a modern audience and keeping the art alive, Jessica’s career has seen her work on some of the biggest gigs in the land of letters, across all corners of the cultural industry, and even open her own shop. Whether it’s the lettering for Wes Anderson’s beloved flick Moonrise Kingdom or book covers for the world’s biggest publishing houses, we can bet that you’ve seen Jessica’s creations out in the wild (numerous times). At September’s event, Jessica will be sitting down with It’s Nice That’s US editor-at-large Elizabeth Goodspeed to talk about her career to date, and all things letters.

Vanilla Chi

We first spoke to Vanilla Chi way back in 2021, when she was in her final year at the School of Visual Arts, when we learnt that her illustrations and comics were a way for her to explore tricky emotions, present and past. Since then, her style has evolved and solidified into the dreamy, ethereal and otherworldly feeling that she’s now so known for, bright with colours edged with a hazy quality, adorned with delicate patterns and willowy characters. Such a unique vision has earned Vanilla work with The New York Times, YouTube, T Magazine China and many more, while still maintaining a strong personal practice alongside commissions. At September’s event, she’ll give a precious insight into her work and career so far.

David Brandon Geeting

David Brandon Geeting has his fingers in many pies, photographically speaking. When he’s not photographing your favourite singer against a backdrop of horses in his studio, he’s probably taking some high-fashion portraits of cats, collaborating with his wife on a strangely beautiful still life book (the multidisciplinary artist Lina Sun Park) or maybe even capturing a fruit salad themed pregnancy shoot, like you’ve never seen before. But despite all these different avenues, you know he’ll be doing it with his trademark effervescence, adding a squeaky clean and ethereal edge to everyday objects and scenes. He’ll be giving the Nicer Tuesdays audience an insight into his career thus far, and all of the colourful projects he’s thrown himself into along the way.

Zoë Pulley

It feels rare to come across a creative who spreads themselves across numerous disciplines, and manages to excel in all, but the multidisciplinary designer Zoë Pulley is one such person. Working across mixed media, audio, typography and print design, one of Zoë’s stand out projects is the Black Joy Archive, a beautiful publication that “preserves generational narratives of Black experiences”. But at Nicer Tuesdays, Zoë will be telling us about two recent opportunities: her recent artistry residency at the Studio Museum, where she explored the creative potential in the process of deep listening, as well as giving us a firsthand look into an exciting upcoming exhibition.

Timings for the evening: doors open at 6.30pm and the talks will begin around 7pm.

About this event
We founded the Welcome Conference in 2014 to create a space where dining room professionals could share ideas, inspire one another, and connect to form a community. By our third year, seats were filled with people from every major industry, who believed that what they could learn from leaders in our industry could supercharge how they ran theirs.

In the ten years since, the Welcome Conference has evolved into America’s preeminent hospitality symposium. We’ve welcomed over 100 speakers, from Fortune 500 CEOs to FBI hostage negotiators, from musicians to magicians — and, of course, some of the most celebrated restauranteurs in the world.

Our attendees believe, as we do, that hospitality is a craft that can be honed, a muscle that can be strengthened — that how they serve their clients is as valuable as what they serve. Building on decades of engagement between experimental literature and performance, The Poetry Project presents ALIEN AND ORDINARY: A POETS THEATER SYMPOSIUM. Our title recalls Bertolt Brecht’s understanding of how making everyday life productively strange, a technique Brecht referred to as alienation, opens up possibilities for ordinary people to transform the world around us in profound ways. Over five events and three days, this symposium engages the past and future of Poets Theater, exploring how community-oriented, anti-professional performance makes new sense of changing everything.

The symposium will feature performances and plays by Nile Harris, Bassem Saad, Sanja Grozdanić, Amelia Bande, and Charlene Incarnate, plus a poets theater variety show hosted by Morgan Bassichis featuring Jess Barbagallo, Nazareth Hassan, Stephen Ira, Kite, The Illustrious Pearl, Fargo Nissim Tbakhi, and Tony Torn.

Tickets to each performance are $15 in advance, or $20 at the door. Attendees can also purchase a pass to all five events for $40.

ALIEN AND ORDINARY opens with a Poets Theater Variety Show hosted by the performance artist Morgan Bassichis and featuring performances and readings from Jess Barbagallo, Nazareth Hassan, Stephen Ira, Kite, The Illustrious Pearl, Fargo Nissim Tbakhi, and Tony Torn. While variety shows have been a central genre of theatrical performance since the vaudeville era, our Poets Theater Variety Show aims to bring forth the broader etymological resonance of variety: an absence of monotony, a change of fortunes, going astray, altering, transforming, bending, all things various and varying.

Permanent Trespass (Beirut of the Balkans and the American Century) is a script-based performance jointly authored by Sanja Grozdanić and Bassem Saad that contends with the possibility and mutability of mourning through protracted catastrophe. While the performance begins with two discrete roles—that of traveling eulogists—the frame of who or what is being mourned appears to shift and unsettle as the work unfolds. The nameless duo recalls both the recent and distant past as if from a discontinuous identity. Their memories and musings are recurrently interrupted by the spectral presence of a third voice invoking what is called “the American Century” (1948-present). Did the Century end in Afghanistan, Syria, or Bosnia? Is it unending? Shifting tenors from the comic to the nostalgic, the melancholic to the absurd, a digressive back-and-forth between these “post-conflict” landscapes and psyches builds toward an uncertain eulogy.

Across numerous iterations since 2021, Permanent Trespass has developed a distinct formal language through a process of continuous re-writing. To quote the opening lines of the performance—everything must go. For this reading at The Poetry Project, Grozdanić and Saad present the first performance of Permanent Trespass with new readers—Kim Rosenfield and Omar Berrada.

let me hold your hand when I say this [the words are just words] is a new play by Nile Harris meditating on the ordinary poetics of desire and faith. The play is a text to be read simultaneously by six Black women. The readers become a discordant and out of sync choir as Harris performs a chance operation to determine whose voice is amplified at a given time.

REHEARSAL ABYSS / ENSAYO ABISMAL, is an incomplete play. Amelia has broken bones, pneumonia, depression – or so she says. Three strict and clumsy nurses move her around while they audition to be in her band, Disregard. The rehearsals are enmeshed with a choreography of care, made difficult by everyone’s personalities, and perceived bodily limitations. Spanish and English fail to translate into legibility. Pain, songs, gossip, resentment and flirtation are the ingredients of the group’s pretentious artistic desires and unreliable healing practices.

Y’all Are Fucked Up is an honest but inebriated glimpse into the destructive habits and LSD belly laughs that our hostess, her family, and her community suffer daily from a non-recovery standpoint. Incarnate, a decade-spanning seminal Brooklyn Drag queen and burgeoning downtown impresario, concocts in perfect verse the stories that follow her virtuosic debut Cuntpany in May 2024, and mounts it at The Poetry Project for one night only.

Hosted by the Art Students League with its nearly 150-year-history as an alternative art school, this day-long program comprising two panels and a keynote speaker addresses both traditional and non-traditional approaches. Speakers will discuss institutions of art education as well as residencies and other professional development opportunities, where artists arguably, learn as much as (or more than) in a “school.”

Since 1875, the Art Students League has thrived as a member-run art school designed to enable artists to develop a mastery of traditional techniques without sacrificing the freedom they need to explore diverse artistic practices and methodologies. Since its publication in 2014, Station Eleven has sold over a million copies, been adapted for an original TV series on HBO Max, and been been named one of the New York Times’s 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. Greenlight neighbor and author Emily St. John Mandel launched the book with Greenlight ten years ago, and we are thrilled to welcome her back to celebrate the book’s anniversary at St. Joseph’s University! Emily speaks with her long-time editor Jenny Jackson about the creation, context, and legacy of Station Eleven, a virtuosic novel set in the eerie days before and after a worldwide pandemic causes the collapse of civilization, that engages with the dangers of extremism and the enduring power of art. Attendees are invited to enjoy refreshments and some special surprises to be announced at this special Friday night event at St. Joseph’s University!
