About this event
We founded the Welcome Conference in 2014 to create a space where dining room professionals could share ideas, inspire one another, and connect to form a community. By our third year, seats were filled with people from every major industry, who believed that what they could learn from leaders in our industry could supercharge how they ran theirs.

In the ten years since, the Welcome Conference has evolved into America’s preeminent hospitality symposium. We’ve welcomed over 100 speakers, from Fortune 500 CEOs to FBI hostage negotiators, from musicians to magicians — and, of course, some of the most celebrated restauranteurs in the world.

Our attendees believe, as we do, that hospitality is a craft that can be honed, a muscle that can be strengthened — that how they serve their clients is as valuable as what they serve. They believe in caring as much for the people they work with and serve as they do about the products they make. They believe every one of us can choose to be in the hospitality industry, no matter what we do — and that you don’t have to be a luxury business to do it.

Once a year, we gather in New York for an immersive, engaging, and provocative day-long program. We exchange stories and challenges and ideas, and we leave with our gas tanks full.

We look forward to welcoming you!

St. Mark’s Church

Curated by Ethan Philbrick

Building on decades of engagement between experimental literature and performance, The Poetry Project presents ALIEN AND ORDINARY: A POETS THEATER SYMPOSIUM. Our title recalls Bertolt Brecht’s understanding of how making everyday life productively strange, a technique Brecht referred to as alienation, opens up possibilities for ordinary people to transform the world around us in profound ways. Over five events and three days, this symposium engages the past and future of Poets Theater, exploring how community-oriented, anti-professional performance makes new sense of changing everything.

The symposium will feature performances and plays by Nile Harris, Bassem Saad, Sanja Grozdanić, Amelia Bande, and Charlene Incarnate, plus a poets theater variety show hosted by Morgan Bassichis featuring Jess Barbagallo, Nazareth Hassan, Stephen Ira, Kite, The Illustrious Pearl, Fargo Nissim Tbakhi, and Tony Torn.

Tickets to each performance are $15 in advance, or $20 at the door. Attendees can also purchase a pass to all five events for $40.

Alien and Ordinary: A Poets Theater Symposium is generously supported and made possible by funding from the Axe-Houghton Foundation.

WEDNESDAY 9/18:

Poets Theater Variety Show

hosted by Morgan Bassichis

featuring Jess Barbagallo, Nazareth Hassan, Stephen Ira, Kite, The Illustrious Pearl, Fargo Nissim Tbakhi, and Tony Torn

8 pm

The Sanctuary

ALIEN AND ORDINARY opens with a Poets Theater Variety Show hosted by the performance artist Morgan Bassichis and featuring performances and readings from Jess Barbagallo, Nazareth Hassan, Stephen Ira, Kite, The Illustrious Pearl, Fargo Nissim Tbakhi, and Tony Torn. While variety shows have been a central genre of theatrical performance since the vaudeville era, our Poets Theater Variety Show aims to bring forth the broader etymological resonance of variety: an absence of monotony, a change of fortunes, going astray, altering, transforming, bending, all things various and varying.

THURSDAY 9/19:

Permanent Trespass (Beirut of the Balkans and the American Century)

Bassem Saad and Sanja Grozdanić

performed by Omar Berrada and Kim Rosenfield

7 pm

The Parish Hall

Permanent Trespass (Beirut of the Balkans and the American Century) is a script-based performance jointly authored by Sanja Grozdanić and Bassem Saad that contends with the possibility and mutability of mourning through protracted catastrophe. While the performance begins with two discrete roles—that of traveling eulogists—the frame of who or what is being mourned appears to shift and unsettle as the work unfolds. The nameless duo recalls both the recent and distant past as if from a discontinuous identity. Their memories and musings are recurrently interrupted by the spectral presence of a third voice invoking what is called “the American Century” (1948-present). Did the Century end in Afghanistan, Syria, or Bosnia? Is it unending? Shifting tenors from the comic to the nostalgic, the melancholic to the absurd, a digressive back-and-forth between these “post-conflict” landscapes and psyches builds toward an uncertain eulogy.

Across numerous iterations since 2021, Permanent Trespass has developed a distinct formal language through a process of continuous re-writing. To quote the opening lines of the performance—everything must go. For this reading at The Poetry Project, Grozdanić and Saad present the first performance of Permanent Trespass with new readers—Kim Rosenfield and Omar Berrada.

let me hold your hand when I say this [the words are just words]

Nile Harris

performed by Pamela Sneed, mayfield brooks, Jennifer Kidwell, Arewà Basit, Muna Mire, and Crackhead Barney

sound by Akeema-Zane

9 pm

The Sanctuary

let me hold your hand when I say this [the words are just words] is a new play by Nile Harris meditating on the ordinary poetics of desire and faith. The play is a text to be read simultaneously by six Black women. The readers become a discordant and out of sync choir as Harris performs a chance operation to determine whose voice is amplified at a given time.

FRIDAY 9/20:

REHEARSAL ABYSS / ENSAYO ABISMAL

Amelia Bande

performed with Mana Bugallo, Tess Dworman, and Ned Riseley

7 pm

The Parish Hall

REHEARSAL ABYSS / ENSAYO ABISMAL, is an incomplete play. Amelia has broken bones, pneumonia, depression – or so she says. Three strict and clumsy nurses move her around while they audition to be in her band, Disregard. The rehearsals are enmeshed with a choreography of care, made difficult by everyone’s personalities, and perceived bodily limitations. Spanish and English fail to translate into legibility. Pain, songs, gossip, resentment and flirtation are the ingredients of the group’s pretentious artistic desires and unreliable healing practices.

Y’all Are Fucked Up

Charlene Incarnate

9 pm

The Sanctuary

Come over to Charlene’s for a joint and who knows what else as she takes you on a faded tour of her serotonin-but-not-dopamine-regulated brain; the one-sided conversations, the showtunes, the transsexual mischief, the ecstasies and sufferings of a woman on the edge fixed in spin cycle. Y’all Are Fucked Up is an honest but inebriated glimpse into the destructive habits and LSD belly laughs that our hostess, her family, and her community suffer daily from a non-recovery standpoint. Incarnate, a decade-spanning seminal Brooklyn Drag queen and burgeoning downtown impresario, concocts in perfect verse the stories that follow her virtuosic debut Cuntpany in May 2024, and mounts it at The Poetry Project for one night only.

About this event
This landmark symposium brings together thought partners from across the United States to discuss systems of fine art education and their futures. Hosted by the Art Students League with its nearly 150-year-history as an alternative art school, this day-long program comprising two panels and a keynote speaker addresses both traditional and non-traditional approaches. Speakers will discuss institutions of art education as well as residencies and other professional development opportunities, where artists arguably, learn as much as (or more than) in a “school.”

Since 1875, the Art Students League has thrived as a member-run art school designed to enable artists to develop a mastery of traditional techniques without sacrificing the freedom they need to explore diverse artistic practices and methodologies. As we approach our 150th anniversary, we are honored to present an in-depth look at the many ways art education has continued to evolve to meet the needs of artists.

This event will be livestreamed via YouTube. Select “Online Admission” ticket option to receive a link to watch.

WHAT IS A ONE-DAY CHOIR?

Gaia Music Collective’s One-Day Choir series is an opportunity to sing in a choir for one day only. A celebration of song and the connective power of singing in harmony. An opportunity to build community, make some new friends, and raise our powerfully diverse voices as one.

No auditions. No commitment. No judgment or need for perfection.

Just the joy of creating something bigger than ourselves with a room full of beautiful humans!

For each choir, we pick a piece of music to rehearse and sing our hearts out to. In our time together, we’ll:

Play some fun singing games, warmups, & connection games
Work through the piece section by section
Break down the lyrics & emotions at play in the song
Shape some key musical moments
& Record some casual rehearsal videos of the piece to have for ourselves and share with the greater Gaia community
Whether you’re a vocal ensemble veteran or have never sung in a group before, you are welcome here – all experience levels are valued in Gaia Music Collective!

OUR SONG THIS TIME AROUND

For this One-Day Choir, we are exploring the dark and moody hit by Radiohead, “Creep”. A song with haunting melodies, striking lyrics, it speaks to battling insecurity and hopelessness. For this event, we will be singing an epic choral re-arrangement of this song by our facilitator, Kenter Davies.

Check out the original here

LEARNING THE MUSIC

Sheet music and vocal recordings of each part will be available as learning resources at least a week before the event, to accommodate multiple ways of learning. These resources will either be included in your order confirmation or sent out in an email!

The intention is for us to come into the gathering having already familiarized ourselves with the parts, so that we can spend our time together really diving into the joys of connection and expression in the music rather than simply teaching parts one by one. That being said, we’re just doing this for ourselves, so there’s no need to stress over it (and definitely no need to memorize it or get it “perfect”, ever)! It’s also often easier to sing in person, when the rest of our part-buddies are singing the part with us. The community is here to support! Our primary intention here is simply to have fun and make some great music.

(If this style of learning isn’t your cup of tea, we have other group singing events where you don’t need to prepare at all! Check out our CircleSinging gatherings and House Shows.)

LED & FACILITATED BY:

This session will be facilitated by the luminous Kenter Davies!

Kenter Davies (he/him) is a vocal arranger, music educator, and choral facilitator based in Brooklyn, New York. He dedicates his work to creating spaces where people can engage with music without the pressure of perfection, but full of complexity and joy. He highlights the journey over the destination and firmly believes in making music for music-making’s sake. Kenter facilitates One Day Choirs and Folk Song Sings with Gaia, an organization that truly helped him find his voice. His greatest love is helping others find their voices and having fun doing it!

PHYSICAL ACCESSIBILITY:

This space is wheelchair accessible
🌱 🌿 🌳

LOW-PRESSURE PARTICIPATION

Gaia Music Collective events are participatory, but low-pressure. You’ll be invited to sing along and make music with us, but we encourage you to draw your own boundaries and engage at your own pace – we pride ourselves in creating a judgment-free community where you can express yourself however feels right!

LATE ARRIVALS

We ask that you arrive no later than 30 minutes after start time, after which we close the doors (lovingly) in order to preserve the intimacy and trust of the musical container we’re building. Thank you for understanding!

CANCELLATION POLICY

Tickets are refundable up to 24 hours before the event, after which we are no longer able to offer refunds. This policy helps us keep these events financially sustainable for both our community & our team. If you RSVP but are no longer able to come, please let us know so that we may offer your spot to someone else! We want as many people to be able to experience these gatherings as possible, and since capacity is limited, each spot is precious.

For more info, contact us at gaiamusiccollective@gmail.com.

MEDIA CONSENT

Because we want to share what we’re up to with people who can’t join us in person, there may be photographers and videographers present — by attending, you consent to being a part of that media, some of which may be posted online! If you have any questions or concerns, please email us at gaiamusiccollective@gmail.com.

NO ONE TURNED AWAY FOR LACK OF FUNDS

Gaia is funded by sliding scale ticket donations, with a “no one turned away for lack of funds” policy. It is of the utmost importance to us that these events remain affordable and accessible – we never want money to be a barrier to making music together. If a ticket scale is financially prohibitive to you, feel free to donate outside of the scale at whatever amount is sustainable for you, or to email us at gaiamusiccollective@gmail.com for volunteer opportunities or assistance!

OUR MISSION

Gaia Music Collective is an NYC-based creative community seeking to foster a more connected world through collective music-making. Founded in June of 2021 in a living room in Brooklyn, this project was born out of a desire to create accessible, inclusive, playful spaces for people to explore connection, expression, healing, & release through collaborative song – spaces where folks feel empowered to make music free of judgment or expectation, and to make new friends as our full, beautiful, authentic selves.

We believe that communal music-making is a fundamental human practice, and this project seeks to build spaces for folks to nurture their relationship to music, whether they’re shower singers, professional musicians, or anything in between.

All are welcome in this community. Gaia seeks to foster spaces of belonging for humans of all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations, classes, religions, abilities, national origins, languages, and musical experiences. All we ask is that you bring an open mind, a desire to connect, and a willingness to leave judgment of self & others at the door.

About this event
When it comes to climate change, there’s an important question we don’t ask often enough: What if we get it right? Let’s flip the apocalyptic script. To joyously explore this topic, Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson will host in conversation Jade Begay, Indigenous rights and climate policy strategist, and Colette Pichon Battle, attorney and climate justice organizer. Ayana will ask her guests, and you, to envision the world we could build if we charge ahead with the plethora of solutions we have at our fingertips. How the heck can we start these societal transformations and reel climate possibilities into being?

Jade and Colette are among those whose insights are featured in Ayana’s new book, What If We Get It Right?: Visions of Climate Futures, which has 20 interviews at its heart, directly inspired by the Pioneer Works Science & Society series. This conversation concludes a tryptic of events Ayana has curated at Pioneer Works over the last year starting with the Climate Futurism exhibition, which was followed by its companion Science & Society event featuring MoMA curator Paola Antonelli and solar/salvage punk artist Olalekan Jeyifous.

Magician Nicole Cardoza will open our night, sparking our thoughts on possibility and transformation.

Books will be available for sale, hosted by Greenlight Bookstore, and a book signing will follow the conversation.

Jade Begay of Tesuque Pueblo and the Dine Nation, works at the intersections of climate and environmental-justice policy and Indigenous rights. Jade has worked with Indigenous-led organizations and Tribes from the Amazon to the Arctic to advance Indigenous-led solutions and self-determination through advocacy campaigns, research, storytelling, and narrative strategies. She is currently developing a research project on the impacts of climate change on Native people in the United States.

Colette Pichon Battle is a human rights attorney, a non-profit executive, and a generational native of Bayou Liberty, Louisiana. She serves as the Vision and Initiatives partner for the non-profit Taproot Earth, which she co-founded. Colette spearheads efforts around equitable climate-disaster recovery, migration, community economic development, and energy democracy.

Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson is a marine biologist, policy expert, and writer. She is co-founder of the non-profit think tank Urban Ocean Lab, co-editor of the bestselling climate anthology All We Can Save, and author of What If We Get it Right?: Visions of Climate Futures. She is in love with climate solutions.

Mike Massimino is a New York Times bestselling author who served as a NASA Astronaut from 1996 to 2014. He is a four-time spacewalker who completed two missions to the Hubble Space Telescope, including the final Hubble servicing mission which has been called the most dangerous and complex mission in space shuttle history. Mike set a team record with his crewmates for the most cumulative spacewalking time in a single space shuttle mission, and he was also the first person to tweet from space. Mike received his BS from Columbia University and his PhD from MIT. He currently lives in New York City where he is a professor at Columbia, Senior Space Advisor at the Intrepid Museum, an expert television commentator, and an in-demand keynote speaker. He also had a recurring role as himself on The Big Bang Theory television series.

About the Book:

Experience all 135 NASA space shuttle missions ever flown through the words of the astronauts themselves in this spectacularly illustrated volume. With more than 600 photos from the NASA archives, this guide is perfect for fans of space history and spaceflight.

NASA’s space shuttle was the world’s first reusable spacecraft, accomplishing many firsts and inspiring generations across its 30-year lifespan as America’s iconic spaceship. In Space Shuttle Stories, shuttle astronaut Tom Jones interviewed more than 130 fellow astronauts for personal vignettes from each mission, complemented by their written accounts for all 135 space shuttle missions, from Columbia’s maiden flight in 1981 to the final launch of Atlantis in 2011. The book is a major contribution to the historical record of a momentous era of spaceflight, and isa definitive oral history that captures the importance, wonder, and exhilaration of the Space Shuttle era.

Each mission profile includes:

An astronaut narrative that immerses the readers in their personal mission experience
Data about the mission, crew, launch, landing, duration, and highlights
Captivating photographs rarely seen by the public

The program is also supported, in part, by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

About this event
Pioneer Works is excited to present Beverly Glenn-Copeland & Friends: The Salon Evening in our Main Hall on Monday, September 30, 2024. The Salon Evening is a program that will feature performances by Beverly Glenn-Copeland with an assortment of different collaborations from the artist’s friends and family, including Elizabeth Glenn-Copeland and special guests to be announced.

PLEASE NOTE: Upon Artist’s request, face masks are required for this performance. Pioneer Works will provide masks to anyone who does not have one upon arrival.

About the Artist:

Beverly Glenn-Copeland

Born in Philadelphia in 1944, Glenn (as he likes to be called) grew up in a house where his father practiced piano for five hours a night, making Bach, Chopin and Mozart his ‘cradle music’. He moved to Montreal in 1961 to study classical voice at McGill University. Faced with challenges relating to his race, gender and sexual orientation, he dropped out of university before completing his degree, picked up a guitar and started writing music.

In 1970 Glenn-Copeland recorded two albums. The first, part of CBC’s ‘Transcription Series,’ was titled Beverly Copeland and was a virtuosic showcase of classical and jazz vocal stylings, poetry, jazz and folk, accompanied by some of the best players of the time. Original pressings of that album now fetch thousands of dollars. Six months later Glenn-Copeland made a studio album with many of those same musicians, including the brilliant Lenny Breau, titled Beverly Glenn-Copeland.

It wasn’t until 1986 that Glenn-Copeland recorded again. Inspired by a profound relationship with nature, an obsession with science fiction and some of the earliest drum-machines and synthesizers, Keyboard Fantasies was born. Self-released on cassette, it sold less than 100 copies. In 2016, Keyboard Fantasies was discovered by a revered Japanese record-store owner. Word spread and several re-issues were released. One thing led to another and within a year, he began to tour the world with his new band, Indigo Rising. This summer, Glenn-Copeland will release an album of brand-new music called The Ones Ahead, another high point in a career that has defied categorisation. In the early 1990s, Beverly Glenn-Copeland first heard the term ‘transgender’. Armed with the language to describe the way he had felt all his life, he discovered a self-identity which had previously eluded him.

Glenn’s love for working with children and youth has been a constant throughout his life. He appeared as regular guest ‘Beverly’ on the beloved Canadian children’s TV show Mr. Dress-up for nearly 30 years. He wrote for Sesame Street and Shining Times Station. With his wife, Elizabeth, a theatre artist, poet and artist educator, he has completed more than a dozen artist residencies in schools and community settings in New Brunswick and Ontario. They founded and ran a theatre school during their years in Miramichi, N.B. and together they have written four musical plays that speak to the issues of our times. Today they work together entirely in collaboration.

Glenn lives in Hamilton, Ontario with Elizabeth.

ABOUT NOTHING LIKE THE MOVIES (B&N Exclusive Edition):

For a few beautiful months, Wes had his dream girl: strong-willed girl-next-door Liz. But right as the two were about to set off to UCLA to start their freshman year together, tragedy struck. Wes was left dealing with the fallout, which ultimately meant losing Liz in the process.

Flash forward months and months later and Wes and Liz find themselves in college, together. In a healthier place now, Wes knows he broke Liz’s heart when he ended things, but he is determined to make her fall back in love with him.

Wes knows Liz better than anyone, and he has a foolproof plan to win her back with the rom-com worthy big gestures she loves. Only…Liz will have none of it. Wes has to scheme like a rom-com hero to figure out how to see her. Even worse, Liz has a new friend…a guy friend.

Still, Wes won’t give up, adapting his clever plans and going hard to get Liz’s attention and win back her affection. But after his best efforts get him nowhere, Wes is left wondering if their relationship is really over for good.

ABOUT Lynn Painter:

Lynn Painter writes romantic comedies for both teens and adults. She is the author of Better Than the Movies, Mr. Wrong Number, The Do-Over, and Betting on You, as well as being a regular contributor to the Omaha World-Herald. She lives in Nebraska with her husband and pack of wild children, and when she isn’t reading or writing, odds are good she’s guzzling energy drinks and watching rom-coms.
