Prince Kung’s Palace Museum 北京恭王府博物馆

Nestled in the heart of Beijing, Prince Kung’s Palace Museum stands as a testament to China’s rich cultural heritage. Recognized as a nationally protected cultural relic, a first-class museum, and a prestigious 5A-level tourist destination, it is one of the most exquisite and well-preserved princely residences of the Qing Dynasty open to the public.

The mansion’s architecture, adorned with intricate color paintings, masterful brick carvings, and meticulously designed gardens, is imbued with the essence of “Fu” (blessing) culture. This cultural symbolism reflects the Chinese people’s timeless aspirations for happiness, prosperity, and a better life. Revered as the “Garden of Ten Thousand Blessings,” the Prince Kung’s Palace offers visitors an unparalleled journey into the elegance and spirit of China’s imperial past.

Interactive Workshops and Experiential Stations

Shadow Puppetry: The Art of Light and Silhouette 皮影戏

Shadow puppetry, also known as “Lantern Shadow Play,” is a traditional art form that uses intricately carved silhouettes of characters, made from animal hide or cardboard. Illuminated by a beam of light, these figures come to life through delicate manipulation and vivid performances, weaving captivating stories for the audience. Visitors are invited to partake in the experience by painting and assembling their own shadow puppets, adding a personal touch to this enchanting craft.

Herbal Sachets: The Art of Scents and Blessings 本草香囊

Sachets, also known as fragrant pouches or perfume bags, are exquisite creations adorned with intricate patterns on the outside and filled with a blend of traditional Chinese herbs and aromatic spices. Worn as an accessory or hung within living spaces, sachets not only serve as decorative items but also offer refreshing scents that calm the mind. Additionally, they are believed to ward off insects, dispel evil spirits, and bring protection and peace.

Visitors are invited to craft their own personalized sachets on-site, creating a unique blend of fragrance and tradition to take home.

Facial Makeup Painting: A Symbol of Traditional Chinese Opera 脸谱绘制

A quintessential element of traditional Chinese opera, facial makeup is characterized by bold colors and dramatic lines that accentuate a character’s features. Each unique combination of patterns and hues conveys the personality, emotions, and social identity of the character.

We will showcase an array of iconic facial makeup examples, spanning Peking Opera, Sichuan Opera, and other regional theatrical traditions. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a guided workshop, where an instructor will lead them in creating their very own facial mask masterpiece.

Furniture Joinery: Mortise and Tenon: 榫卯结构

The mortise-and-tenon joint is a hallmark of ancient Chinese wooden architecture, furniture, and tools. This ingenious structural technique leverages the natural properties of wood, creating stable connections between components through interlocking concave and convex shapes—entirely without the use of nails. It is a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship and wisdom of ancient artisans.

This event draws inspiration from the Prince Kung’s Palace collection of furniture, showcasing classic mortise-and-tenon structures through detailed models. Visitors will witness the elegance of these techniques up close and participate in hands-on activities, dismantling and assembling furniture components. Those who complete the assembly within the allotted time will be rewarded with special prizes, making for a uniquely engaging and educational experience.

Chinese Knotting: An Ancient Craft of Blessings and Wishes 结绳技艺

Knot weaving is an ancient art form, where each intricately tied knot seems to entwine the blessings of time with the hopes for a prosperous new year. Every loop and weave locks in joy, harmony, and the longing for health and happiness, allowing good fortune to flow through the strands. It symbolizes the beginning of a beautiful chapter filled with family unity and success in all endeavors.

Under the guidance of an instructor, participants can create their own woven knots, crafting tangible expressions of hope and blessings.

Lacquer Fans: A Fusion of Art and Craftsmanship 漆扇

Lacquer fans are exquisite creations that combine the timeless artistry of lacquerware with the elegance of fan design. Crafted through a meticulous process, lacquer is delicately dropped onto the water’s surface, where patterns emerge through techniques such as dotting, flicking, bouncing, and drawing. Once the fan is immersed in the water, the vibrant colors and intricate patterns transfer onto it, capturing the dynamic ripples and vivid veins of the water’s motion.

Adding to their allure, visitors can actively engage in the creation of lacquer fans, transforming the process into an immersive and enchanting artistic experience.

Woodblock Printing: The Art of Capturing Carved Masterpieces “福”字拓印

Woodblock Printing is a traditional art form that replicates the intricate details of carved or engraved surfaces. The process begins with carving desired patterns onto a wooden block, often favoring abstract decorative designs for striking visual effects. Ink or paint is then applied to the block, and paper is pressed over it to create a beautiful impression.

This event combines the “Fu” motif from the Prince Kung’s Palace Museum collection with the techniques of traditional Chinese woodblock New Year prints. Participants will use brushes to apply pigment and create their own rubbings, enjoying both the artistry of the process and the joy of taking home a one-of-a-kind keepsake.

Paper Cutting: The Art of Crafting Good Fortune 剪纸

Paper cutting is a cherished Chinese folk art that involves intricately slicing paper to create beautiful patterns, each symbolizing auspiciousness and happiness. For this event, a master of intangible cultural heritage has crafted exclusive designs, and under the guidance of a skilled instructor, visitors will create their own symbols of good fortune.

2025 Winter Lecture

The Alhambra—A Moorish Paradise: Explore a Magical and Ethereal World

Our 2025 Winter Lecture features Untermyer Gardens Conservancy President, Stephen F. Byrns, who will delve into the exquisite architecture and ethereal gardens of the Alhambra.

The Alhambra in Spain is the most significant preserved Moorish palace in Europe—older than the surviving paradise gardens of Iran, India, and Pakistan, dating to the 14th century. Built on a fortified hill overlooking Granada, which was then an Islamic kingdom, its architecture is richly ornamented like a faceted jewel, while water flows throughout its intricately linked courtyard gardens. The nearby Generalife was the sultans’ summer palace with extensive gardens which seem a world away from the towering Alhambra.

The lecture will take place at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, 921 Madison Avenue, NYC, with a reception following the lecture.

A recording of the lecture will be available starting February 6, tickets sold separately.

About SCYTHE & SPARROW (B&N EXCLUSIVE EDITION):

Doctor Fionn Kane is running from a broken heart, one he hopes to mend in small-town Nebraska, far away from his almost-fiancé and his derailed surgical career. It’s a simpler life: head down, hard work, and absolutely no romantic relationships. He wants none of the circus he left behind in Boston.

But then the real circus finds him.

Motorcycle performer Rose Evans has spent a decade on the road with the Silveria Circus, and it suits her just fine, especially when she has the urge to indulge in a little murder when she’s not in the spotlight. But when a kill goes awry and she ends up with an injured leg, Rose finds herself stuck in Nebraska, at the home of the adorably nerdy town doctor.

The problem is, not every broken heart can be sewn back together.

…And the longer you stay in one place, the more likely your ghosts are to catch up.

Tropes:
Friends with benefits
Small town romance
Fish out of water
Forced proximity
Hurt/care
Touch her and die

About Brynne Weaver:

#1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author and TikTok sensation with works sold worldwide in over eighteen languages to date, Brynne Weaver has traveled the world, taken in more stray animals than her husband would probably prefer, and nurtured her love for dark comedies, horror, and romance in both literature and film. During all her adventures, the constant thread in Brynne’s life has been writing. With nine published works and counting, Brynne has made her mark in the literary world by blending irreverent dark comedy, swoon-worthy romance, and riveting suspense to create genre-breaking, addictive stories for readers to escape into.

About this event
In celebration of Ariana Reines’s urgent new book, Wave of Blood, please join us for a gathering in honor of poetic kinship, queer family, horrible and legendary fathers, and life after death.

Wave of Blood wrestles with the mind of war. It’s a furious and sincere essay, an eclipse notebook, and a family chronicle, all told in the poetry of witness. Tonight, its author will be joined by the great Eileen Myles for a very special conversation and reading to hail this work and Eileen’s own extraordinary career in poetry, art, activism, and recovery.

Ariana says: “Back in 2015 I was at one of the lowest points in my life. Eileen and I already had this running joke going wherein I am the reincarnation of their dad, who died on my birthday (same day different year). I was sobbing to Eileen on the phone, from an airbnb in Medford Mass, when tearfully I said ‘Would your dad come back as a miserable, menstrual, femme Jewess from Salem Massachusetts?’ And Eileen goes, “‘That’s exactly what he’d come back as. And he loved doing drag—this was and is his dream.”

Attendees have the option to receive a signed copy of Wave of Blood when purchasing a ticket in Eventbrite. Copies of Wave of Blood will also be available for purchase at the event.

This program is part of PW Broadcast’s Author Talks, a series highlighting authors and thinkers across disciplines.

Pioneer Works Broadcast is supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Program in Public Understanding of Science and Technology, bridging the two cultures of science and the arts.

RESISTERHOOD: Opening Celebration Young Joon Kwak’s opening of RESISTERHOOD at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art @ Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art 26 Wooster Street New York, NY 10013 United States

About this event
Join us for the opening celebration of Young Joon Kwak’s exhibition, RESISTERHOOD.
Young Joon Kwak’s work begins with touch. Molds and imprints of bodies – the artist’s own, and those of friends, loved ones, and collaborators – are dis- and re-assembled, burnished and jeweled. The resulting works bear intimate human traces and yet remain anonymous, moving in and out of recognition. They shimmer in their distortions and imperfections, presenting us with bodies both frozen in time and in perpetual transition: in the midst of youth, aging, gestation, or gender transformation.

RESISTERHOOD includes new commissions and works made over the past ten years, a series of neon sculptures for the Museum’s public window gallery, and a soundscape composed by Xina Xurner (Kwak and Marvin Astorga) with Johanna Hedva, Anna Luisa, and Dorian Wood. Taken together, these artworks are a mobilizing call for a new politics of queer and trans resistance: embracing a playful erotics, and celebrating imperfection, abjection, ambiguity, and uncategorizable ways of looking and being.

Young Joon Kwak (b. 1984, Queens, New York) is a Los Angeles-based sculptor, performance artist, and the founder of Mutant Salon, a queer-transfem-BIPOC collective beauty salon and collaborative art and performance platform. Their work has been widely exhibited at galleries and museums internationally, including at the Hammer Museum’s biennial exhibition Made in L.A. 2023: Acts of Living. Learn more about Young Joon Kwak here.
