The 5th AAAE Conference @ United Nations Conference Centre
Sep 23 – Sep 26 all-day
The 5th AAAE Conference @ United Nations Conference Centre | Addis Ababa | Addis Ababa | Ethiopia

The 5th International Conference of AAAE will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 23 – 26 September 2016 under the theme Transforming Smallholder Agriculture in Africa: The Role of Policy and Governance”. The choice of theme has been motivated by the fact that the renewed efforts by most African governments in recent times to commit to supporting agriculture in order to reduce poverty and increase wealth among smallholder farmers are being hindered by a number of challenges not least how effectively to implement sound evidence-based policy reforms within vibrant complex political economies. African governments are aware of the evidence suggesting that GDP growth originating in agriculture is about four times more effective in reducing poverty than GDP growth of other sectors hence their efforts to forge agricultural transformation.

The conference will attract the participation of agricultural economists from academia, industry, government, non-governmental organizations, and the farming communities. These are people who drive policy prescriptions and implementation in their various countries. Many of the African countries to be represented at this conference subscribe to the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), whose overall goal is to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty through agricultural transformation. The countries, in their development blueprints have adopted the four CAADP pillars which include extending the area under sustainable land management, improving rural infrastructure and trade-related capacities for market access, increasing food supply and reducing hunger, and increasing spending on agricultural research, technology dissemination and adoption.

The conference is expected to attract about 450 – 500 delegates from around the world.

Launch of the ATF Report @ Intercontinental Addis Ababa, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Launch of the ATF Report

The Budapest Centre for Mass Atrocities Prevention and the
Hungarian Embassy to Ethiopia have the pleasure to invite you or your representative to the launch event of the African Task Force Report: African Regional Communities and the Prevention of Mass Atrocities

The International Community recognizes the growing significance of regional and sub-regional organizations in addressing issues and challenges of individual states. The inherent link between political stability and economic growth, and the great impact peace and stability have on economies and development is a fundamental tenet for regional development in Africa, particularly within countries with histories of conflict and political instability. Conducting a thorough review of the capacities and capabilities as well as the needs of African key regional and sub-regional organizations can contribute to shaping the agenda for their enhancement, encouraging new discussions on needs relating to security, development and human rights.

Guided by the abovementioned ideas and following the successful experience of the 2013 EU Task Force, the Budapest Centre for Mass Atrocities Prevention, with the support of Humanity United, established the African Task Force on the Prevention of Mass Atrocities (ATF) comprised of prominent African researchers and launched the Initiative in Addis Ababa in March 2015.

The main objectives of the Initiative:

Conduct a review of capacities, capabilities and needs of regional institutions in Africa (AU, ECOWAS, IGAD, SADC and ICGLR) to prevent mass atrocities including war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and ethnic cleansing;
Synthesize lessons from the continental and global ‘state of art’ to strengthen African technical and operational capacity in early warning and response (EWR);
Improve the regional institution’s capacity and willingness to address political instability and prevent mass atrocities more effectively;
Enhance national and local capacities in Africa and step up the interaction with international actors and donors to prevent mass atrocities;Promote dialogue as a tool for mass atrocities prevention among members of regional and sub- regional organizations and at national and community levels;
Raise awareness and translate general commitment of African States to atrocity prevention into practice by making prevention of mass atrocity crimes a priority of their policies.

The results of the ATF activities and the Initiative have been described in the Report “African Regional Communities and the Prevention of Mass Atrocities”.

The document provides a detailed overview of what has been accomplished in Africa at the regional level, and what challenges remain in advancing a robust mass atrocities prevention agenda.

Bahir Dar, Gondar and Simien Mountains Trekking @ Venture Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Bahir Dar, Gondar and Simien Mountains Trekking

Northern Ethiopia boasts a wealth of both natural and historical treasures. This tour starts with a trip to Bahir Dar, where you’ll visit the Blue Nile Falls and take a cruise on Lake Tana. From Bahir Dar, the tour continues Gondar, where you can explore the Royal Enclosure, and the ruined fairy-tale castles which have earned it the name ‘African Camelot’. Heading north-east, you’ll then visit the Simien Mountains National Park, famous for far-reaching views and rare wildlife species. The Simien Mountains National Park, designated as a UNESCO world heritage site, contains many summits over 4000m and is known for its stunning scenery. Erosion of basalt lavas has created the dramatic escarpments and freestanding pinnacles that are characteristic of the Simien Mountains range and which are comparable in terms of spectacle to the Grand Canyon. Five and a half days of trekking will take you through a scenic land of natural wonders and rare wildlife, including the Ethiopian wolf, the strikingly-maned Gelada baboon and the majestic lammergeier or bearded vulture. Trekking through several villages, notable for their carefully tended farmland and friendly people, the walk reaches its climax at the summit of Ras Deshen (4543m), where the views extend northwards to Eritrea.
