Mahalia Presented by Move Forward Music ALL AGES @ SOB's 204 Varick St New York, NY 10014 United States
Apr 24 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Mahalia Presented by Move Forward Music ALL AGES @ SOB's 204 Varick St New York, NY 10014 United States

An intimate evening with Mahalia, at the legendary home of music, SOB’s, presented by Move Forward Music.
About this Event
Leicester native Mahalia enjoyed an incredible 2018, quickly becoming one of the year’s most exciting UK female artists. She rode fast in her own lane, winning YouTube’s inaugural ‘One To Watch’ list and soon after became the only musician to be tipped for the BRIT’s Critics Choice Award and the BBC Sound Poll shortlists in the same year. Mahalia found success via her uncompromising, buoyant songs such as ‘One Night Only’, a single which was taken from her hotly acclaimed 2018 EP ‘Seasons’.

Following the release, Mahalia graced the Berlin online platform COLORS, where her performance of ‘Sober’ went viral and has since accumulated over 24 million views!

At 12 years old –the age most of us are aimlessly riding bikes or trying to avoid homework –Mahalia was cradling her guitar and penning love songs. With her entrancing, soulful tones, wise-yet-relatable wordplay and intuitive sense of melody, it quickly became clear that she had an innate musicality and that she’d be doing this for the rest of her life. In the time since she first picked up that guitar she’s dropped a scattering of releases –from 2012’s indie-flecked acoustic dream ‘Head Space’ to 2015’s gorgeously understated 4-track EP ‘Never Change’–and 2016’s genre-flipping mixtape ‘Diary of Me’. But for Mahalia, it feels as if she’s just getting started.

ART WORLD CONFERENCE 2019 by Art World Conference, LLC @ New York Law School 185 West Broadway New York, NY 10013 United States

Welcome to ART WORLD CONFERENCE, a new, annual professional development experience bringing together ARTISTS and ARTS PROFESSIONALS at all stages in their careers. All confirmed conference Presenters are listed below!

Registration includes a Welcome Party on Thursday April 25 (6pm – 9pm) at New York Academy of Art (111 Franklin Street, NYC) and entry into two full days of programming, April 26 – 27 at New York Law School (185 West Broadway, NYC).

Art World Conference is a business and financial literacy conference that includes panel discussions, conversations, and in-depth sessions addressing many of the opportunities and challenges faced by visual artists and arts professionals who work closely with artists. Topics range from sales, marketing, grants, taxes, managing debt, and investing to managing public projects, new technologies, and growing and sustaining community. The emphasis of all programming is on personal development and empowerment.

We look forward to seeing you at our inaugural conference, to take place April 25 – 27, 2019, in New York City.

Art World Conference is organized by Dexter Wimberly, entrepreneur and independent curator, and Heather Bhandari, co-author of the leading professional development guide for artists, Art/Work. We believe organization, financial literacy, and professionalism are crucial components of an artist’s studio practice. Business skills and sustainable income streams create opportunities and resources for the implementation of creative, ambitious ideas. Our goal is to provide a platform where artists learn tangible skills, are directed to relevant resources, explore options for sustainability at all stages in their careers, and feel the support of community.

Art World Conference is sponsored by Morgan Stanley, Kickstarter, 21c Museum Hotels, Hyperallergic, The Creative Independent, Spring Place, and ArtTable. Art World Conference is a fiscally sponsored project of the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Old School Vs New School Brunch & Day Party - Mother's Day Edition by The Alumni Group @ MIST Harlem 46 West 116th Street New York, NY 10026 United States

Remember when MTV actually played music videos instead of all those ratchet reality TV shows? At one time, music videos were a really BIG DEAL! C’mon… you know you used to race home after school to watch The Box (“Music Television You Control”), and Video Soul or Rap City on BET. If you were in NYC back then, you remember how we lived for Video Music Box with Ralph McDaniels and The Bobby Simmon’s show. But no matter where you grew up, chances are that at some point you spent time watching music videos – imitating the dance moves, learning the lyrics, and copy the fashion trends… Man, those were the days! Well, The Alumni Group is taking you on a trip down memory lane at our Video Music Brunch. Along with our delicious brunch food specials, we’ll not only be spinning the classics, we’ll also be showing off the visuals that go along with them. Enjoy our dope music video playlist, featuring your old school favorites as well as the new-new hotness, as you sip on unlimited brunch cocktails. The song says that “videos killed the radio star”, but at this brunch we’ll celebrate the role videos have played in shaping our culture over the years. Trust us, you won’t want to miss this visual, audio, culinary experience!
