About this event
Join Open House New York on a boat tour exploring the transformative role of financial, cultural, and community capital on New York’s waterfront. Andrew Gustafson of Turnstile Tours will lead a tour highlighting capital projects, housing, and industrial development shaping neighborhoods and shorelines along the East River. Passing by Randalls, Rikers, and Wards Islands on the way to the mouth of the Bronx River, this tour will offer participants the chance to see waterways rarely traversed by tour boats.
With over 500 miles of waterfront, New York’s harbors are home to various projects and places that generate economic, environmental, and cultural value for the city. From community land trusts to affordable housing developments to the industrial food center at Hunts Point, this tour will spotlight areas of investment along the waterfront while offering breathtaking views of the city skyline.
This program is part of Building Capital: The Value of Place, a multi-year series exploring how different types of capital—including financial, cultural, and community capital—combine to shape the quality of place and quality of life across the five boroughs and how these intersecting systems of capital can reverse legacies of disinvestment. This program is made possible with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and Bloomberg Philanthropies.
Discounted tickets are available for OHNY members. If you have not received the code, please email membership@ohny.org.
All persons who board the boat, including infants and children, require a ticket. Email info@ohny.org to purchase discounted tickets for children 12 and under.
Guests must check-in and be on board the boat by 6:20pm. The boat will depart from Pier 16, South Street Seaport (John Street and the East River), promptly at 6:30pm.
Ticket sales are final. There will be no refunds for bad weather, tardiness, unforeseen route modifications, or any other reason except in the extremely rare instance where the cruise must be cancelled entirely. If you have purchased a ticket but can no longer attend, we can donate your ticket to a community partner.
Additional FAQs are available below.
AIA CES credit (2.5 LU) is available for new attendees of this program.

THE FILM
Little Miss Sunshine
Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris | 2006 | US | 99 mins
Father Richard (Greg Kinnear) is desperately trying to sell his motivational success program… with no success. Meanwhile, “pro-honesty” mom Sheryl (Toni Collette) lends support to her eccentric family, including her depressed brother (Steve Carell), fresh out of the hospital after being jilted by his lover. Then there are the younger Hoovers – the seven-year-old, would-be beauty queen Olive (Abigail Breslin) and Dwayne (Paul Dano), a Nietzsche-reading teen who has taken a vow of silence. Topping off the family is the foul-mouthed grandfather (Alan Arkin), whose outrageous behavior recently got him evicted from his retirement home. When Olive is invited to compete in the “Little Miss Sunshine” pageant in far-off California, the family piles into their rusted-out VW bus to rally behind her – with riotously funny results. Presented as part of Searchlight Pictures’ 30th Anniversary Celebration.

Sloan Foundation’s Science on Screen® initiative—using a sheet and ultraviolet light to attract and interact with some of the wildlife in Fort Greene Park!
THE FILM
The Night Visitors
Michael Gitlin | US | 72 mins
The Night Visitors is a movie about moths. In large and small fragments, looking both inward and out, through a critical lens that is by turns social and personal, the film closely considers these underknown creatures. While The Night Visitors is interested in moths as organisms, with fascinating life histories, staggering biodiversity, and a functional importance as indicators of climate change and habitat degradation, its engagement with them is not primarily entomological. Instead, the film looks at moths as aesthetic beings and as carriers of meaning, aiming for a deep encounter with the beauty and incommensurability of the profoundly other. The small hours of the night are threaded through with a sense of mortality and loss. Moths, with their trembling and exquisite impermanence, provide both a kind of solace and, in their diversity and difference, a focal point around which the desire to know can be organized. Presented in Partnership with the Fort Greene Park Conservancy and NYC Council Member Crystal Hudson.

ABOUT LOUD:
Drew Afualo is best known as the internet’s “Crusader for Women” and is at the head of a new generation of entertainment’s rising stars. Loud is part manual, part manifesto, and part memoir. It makes it clear that behind her fearsome laugh is a mission and a life philosophy, a strategy for self-confidence from the inside out, and a pathway to once and for all remove men from the center of how women and femmes think about themselves.
Afualo has amassed more than nine million followers across her social platforms. When she first started creating content in 2020, she realized that men on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and other apps were creating sexist content aimed at disparaging women, and also containing rampant fatphobia, racism, and other forms of bigotry, with very real-life consequences. It didn’t take long for her to step into the role of unofficial watchdog for misogyny, and her signature laugh is now recognized as a feminist call to arms, a summoning cry to rid the internet (and our hearts, minds, and lives) of “terrible men” and create a space to fight outdated patriarchal ideals.
ABOUT Drew Afualo:
Drew Afualo is a content creator and women’s rights advocate. Her writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, and she has been profiled in The New York Times, Nylon, and Rolling Stone. She was named Adweek’s 2022 Digital & Tech Creator of the Year, Meta’s Creator of Tomorrow, and one of Time magazine’s Next Generation Leaders. Afualo has covered the red carpet at the Academy Awards and hosts the Spotify Exclusive podcast The Comment Section. Loud is her first book.
