Special Guest Speaker:
Charlie Blackwell-Thompson serves as launch director for NASA’s Exploration Ground Systems Program, based at NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida. She oversees the countdown and liftoff of NASA’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft for the Artemis missions. On Nov. 16, 2022, Blackwell-Thompson led her team during the first launch of Artemis – and uncrewed flight test of SLS and the Orion spacecraft. She is now preparing for Artemis II, the first crewed Artemis mission. Named to the position in January 2016, Blackwell-Thompson is NASA’s first female launch director.
Her role includes leading and managing the launch operations planning and execution for the Exploration Ground Systems program and Exploration Systems Development Division, or ESD. She also serves as the cross-program lead to the Launch Integration team responsible for integration and coordination of launch operations across the three programs: SLS, Orion and EGS. In her role as launch director, she manages the development of all launch countdown plans, philosophy, and launch and scrub turnaround procedures and schedules, as well as training approaches.
Moderator:
Mike Massimino is a New York Times bestselling author who served as a NASA Astronaut from 1996 to 2014. He is a four-time spacewalker who completed two missions to the Hubble Space Telescope, including the final Hubble servicing mission which has been called the most dangerous and complex mission in space shuttle history. Mike set a team record with his crewmates for the most cumulative spacewalking time in a single space shuttle mission, and he was also the first person to tweet from space. Mike received his BS from Columbia University and his PhD from MIT. He currently lives in New York City where he is a professor at Columbia, Senior Space Advisor at the Intrepid Museum, an expert television commentator, and an in-demand keynote speaker. He also had a recurring role as himself on The Big Bang Theory television series.
Astro Live is supported through a NASA Cooperative Agreement awarded to the New York Space Grant Consortium.
The program is also supported, in part, by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

ABOUT LOUD:
Drew Afualo is best known as the internet’s “Crusader for Women” and is at the head of a new generation of entertainment’s rising stars. Loud is part manual, part manifesto, and part memoir. It makes it clear that behind her fearsome laugh is a mission and a life philosophy, a strategy for self-confidence from the inside out, and a pathway to once and for all remove men from the center of how women and femmes think about themselves.
Afualo has amassed more than nine million followers across her social platforms. When she first started creating content in 2020, she realized that men on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and other apps were creating sexist content aimed at disparaging women, and also containing rampant fatphobia, racism, and other forms of bigotry, with very real-life consequences. It didn’t take long for her to step into the role of unofficial watchdog for misogyny, and her signature laugh is now recognized as a feminist call to arms, a summoning cry to rid the internet (and our hearts, minds, and lives) of “terrible men” and create a space to fight outdated patriarchal ideals.
ABOUT Drew Afualo:
Drew Afualo is a content creator and women’s rights advocate. Her writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, and she has been profiled in The New York Times, Nylon, and Rolling Stone. She was named Adweek’s 2022 Digital & Tech Creator of the Year, Meta’s Creator of Tomorrow, and one of Time magazine’s Next Generation Leaders. Afualo has covered the red carpet at the Academy Awards and hosts the Spotify Exclusive podcast The Comment Section. Loud is her first book.

Sound Meditation (often known as ‘sound healing’) is the practice of listening to soothing sounds to reach profound states of clarity and relaxation. It opens up deep meditative states that are usually unreachable without considerable effort.
During the event, participants (mostly laying down) are bathed head to toe in sound— it’s a very hypnotic, ethereal experience.
You will come away with a clear mind, and a deeper appreciation for the wonder of sound. We strongly recommend this event for people who have trouble meditating, or feel like they just “can’t get there.” Give this a try 🙂.
Sound Meditation Presents promotes the practice of using sound as a way to affect physical health and conscious awareness.
🌑
Please arrive early. Doors open at 8pmpm and we ask everyone to please arrive then. Doors are closed at 8:30pm.
If you are laying down, we recommend bringing:

Jessica Hische, David Brandon Geeting, Zoë Pulley, Vanilla Chi: Tickets now available for September’s Nicer Tuesdays in New York!
A lettering artist, photographer, graphic designer and illustrator walk into a theatre. What do you get? A brilliant event!
Already worried about the end of summer? Us too. But we’ve got something to soothe your post-summer blues: another fantastic Nicer Tuesdays event in New York!
This time round we’ll be welcoming the lettering artist extraordinaire Jessica Hische to the stage for a Q&A, to chat about her work for some of the biggest cultural moments in film, books and more. Before that, we’ll enjoy talks from illustrator Vanilla Chi, known for her beautifully ethereal and otherworldly work; photographer David Brandon Geeting, master of the modern portrait and still-life; and designer Zoë Pulley, whose stunning and thoughtful work spans multiple disciplines and media, with an extra special eye for editorial design. Our event partner MPB will also be giving you the chance to win a camera at September’s event! Enter the raffle on site for a chance to walk away with a Sony ZV-E10.
Jessica Hische
When it comes to letters, few do it better – or have more expansive reach – than Jessica Hische. Widely seen as the 21st century’s answer to reviving traditional hand-lettering styles, modifying them for a modern audience and keeping the art alive, Jessica’s career has seen her work on some of the biggest gigs in the land of letters, across all corners of the cultural industry, and even open her own shop. Whether it’s the lettering for Wes Anderson’s beloved flick Moonrise Kingdom or book covers for the world’s biggest publishing houses, we can bet that you’ve seen Jessica’s creations out in the wild (numerous times). At September’s event, Jessica will be sitting down with It’s Nice That’s US editor-at-large Elizabeth Goodspeed to talk about her career to date, and all things letters.
Vanilla Chi
We first spoke to Vanilla Chi way back in 2021, when she was in her final year at the School of Visual Arts, when we learnt that her illustrations and comics were a way for her to explore tricky emotions, present and past. Since then, her style has evolved and solidified into the dreamy, ethereal and otherworldly feeling that she’s now so known for, bright with colours edged with a hazy quality, adorned with delicate patterns and willowy characters. Such a unique vision has earned Vanilla work with The New York Times, YouTube, T Magazine China and many more, while still maintaining a strong personal practice alongside commissions. At September’s event, she’ll give a precious insight into her work and career so far.
David Brandon Geeting
David Brandon Geeting has his fingers in many pies, photographically speaking. When he’s not photographing your favourite singer against a backdrop of horses in his studio, he’s probably taking some high-fashion portraits of cats, collaborating with his wife on a strangely beautiful still life book (the multidisciplinary artist Lina Sun Park) or maybe even capturing a fruit salad themed pregnancy shoot, like you’ve never seen before. But despite all these different avenues, you know he’ll be doing it with his trademark effervescence, adding a squeaky clean and ethereal edge to everyday objects and scenes. He’ll be giving the Nicer Tuesdays audience an insight into his career thus far, and all of the colourful projects he’s thrown himself into along the way.
Zoë Pulley
It feels rare to come across a creative who spreads themselves across numerous disciplines, and manages to excel in all, but the multidisciplinary designer Zoë Pulley is one such person. Working across mixed media, audio, typography and print design, one of Zoë’s stand out projects is the Black Joy Archive, a beautiful publication that “preserves generational narratives of Black experiences”. But at Nicer Tuesdays, Zoë will be telling us about two recent opportunities: her recent artistry residency at the Studio Museum, where she explored the creative potential in the process of deep listening, as well as giving us a firsthand look into an exciting upcoming exhibition.
Timings for the evening: doors open at 6.30pm and the talks will begin around 7pm.
A massive thanks to our event partner MPB. We’re also excited to partner with EBBS, which will be providing each attendee with a complimentary drink (with proof of legal age), and Love Corn, which will be providing some snacks.
Photography and filming may be taken at this event for marketing and promotional purposes. If you do not want to be photographed or filmed, please speak to our team on the day.

——————————————————————–
From Pulitzer Prize–winning author Elizabeth Strout comes a hopeful, healing novel about new friendships, old loves, and the very human desire to leave a mark on the world.
It’s autumn in Maine, and the town lawyer Bob Burgess has become enmeshed in an unfolding murder investigation, defending a lonely, isolated man accused of killing his mother. He has also fallen into a deep and abiding friendship with the acclaimed writer Lucy Barton, who lives down the road in a house by the sea with her ex-husband, William. Together, Lucy and Bob go on walks and talk about their lives, their fears and regrets, and what might have been. Lucy, meanwhile, is finally introduced to the iconic Olive Kitteridge, now living in a retirement community on the edge of town. They spend afternoons together in Olive’s apartment, telling each other stories. Stories about people they have known—“unrecorded lives,” Olive calls them—reanimating them, and, in the process, imbuing their lives with meaning.
Brimming with empathy and pathos, Tell Me Everything is Elizabeth Strout operating at the height of her powers, illuminating the ways in which we our relationships keep us afloat. As Lucy says, “Love comes in so many different forms, but it is always love.”
