About this event
Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes
Historian Raphael Gross, Director of the German Historical Museum and editor of a history of the worldwide reception of Anne Frank’s diaries, discusses the making of and response to a unique document in literary history. Neither a true diary that chronologically records the daily life and thoughts of its author, nor a work of fiction, the Diary of a Young Girl is an unfinished manuscript. Adapted from diary entries in multiple stages by the young author herself – and posthumously by her father – it made Anne Frank into perhaps the most famous German- Jewish writer of the 20th century. Today, it is an unparalleled urtext of the Holocaust.Against this background, the lecture will focus on the worldwide reception of the diary over almost eight decades. How was the edition of the text authorized by Otto Frank received in countries as diverse as Holland, Israel, the USA, Japan, Hungary, Spain, and the GDR? Which aspects of her notes were included? Which faded into the background? And what did the icon “Anne Frank” stand for in all these contexts?
LBI and the Center for Jewish History are thrilled to offer tickets to an exclusive viewing of Anne Frank The Exhibition after the talk. If you wish to attend, choose this ticketing option. Tickets are $30 and will be for a 7:45 viewing.
This event will take place in person at the Center for Jewish History and will be followed by a small reception. If you are not able to attend, the panel will be recorded and uploaded to LBI’s YouTube channel.

About this event
Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes
Colonial ambitions spawned imperial attitudes, theories, and practices that remain entrenched within botany and across the life sciences. Banu Subramaniam, an interdisciplinary plant biologist and Luella LaMer Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at Wellesley College, draws on fields as disparate as queer studies, Indigenous studies, and the biological sciences to explore the labyrinthine history of how colonialism transformed rich and complex plant worlds into biological knowledge. Their third book, Botany of Empire: Plant Worlds and the Scientific Legacies of Colonialism (University of Washington Press, 2024), demonstrates how botany’s foundational theories and practices were shaped and fortified in the aid of colonial rule and its extractive ambitions. We see how colonizers obliterated plant time’s deep history to create a reductionist system that imposed a Latin-based naming system, drew on the imagined sex lives of European elites to explain plant sexuality, and discussed foreign plants like foreign humans. Subramaniam then pivots to imagining a more inclusive and capacious field of botany untethered and decentered from its origins in histories of racism, slavery, and colonialism. This vision harnesses the power of feminist and scientific thought to chart a course for more socially just practices of experimental biology.

Speakers
Banu Subramaniam is the Luella LaMer Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at Wellesley College. She is an interdisciplinary scholar, trained as an evolutionary biologist and plant scientist, and has since embraced tools from the humanities and social sciences to help shape the field of Feminist Science and Technology Studies. She explores the philosophy, history, and culture of the natural sciences and medicine as they relate to gender, race, ethnicity, and caste.
Subramaniam is the author of three books. These include Botany of Empire: Plant Worlds and the Scientific Legacies of Colonialism (University of Washington Press, 2024), Holy Science: The Biopolitics of Hindu Nationalism (University of Washington Press, 2019), which won the 2020 Michelle Kendrick Memorial Book Prize from the Society for Literature, Science & the Arts, and Ghost Stories for Darwin: The Science of Variation and the Politics of Diversity (University of Illinois Press, 2014), winner of the 2016 Ludwick Fleck Prize for an outstanding book across the breadth of science and technology studies. She is co-editor of Feminist Science Studies: A New Generation (Routledge, 2001), which put Feminist Science Studies on the map, and MEAT! A Transnational Analysis.
Rebecca Jordan-Young is Interim Director of the Barnard Center for Research on Women and Ann Whitney Olin Professor of WGSS at Barnard College. Jordan-Young is the author of two award-winning books: Brain Storm: The Flaws in the Science of Sex Differences (Harvard 2010) and Testosterone: An Unauthorized Biography with Katrina Karkazis (Harvard 2019). She collaborates with colleagues across the natural and social sciences to explore the productive entanglements of science and the social world, especially as these relate to the entrenched structures of gender, race, and sexuality. A Guggenheim Fellow and a recipient of fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Brocher Foundation, and others, Jordan-Young’s work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and the Foundation for Veteran, Worker, and Environmental Health, among others.
Natali Valdez is an assistant professor in Sociology and Anthropology at Fordham University. Prior to Fordham, she has held faculty and fellowship positions at Yale University, Purdue University, and Wellesley College. She has also been an invited visiting scholar at the University of Vienna, University of Melbourne, and Universidad de los Andes. As a medical anthropologist and science and technology scholar, Valdez applies a feminist and critical race approach to understanding reproductive medicine, science, and technology. Her award-winning book, Weighing the Future, examines the clinical translation of epigenetics and is the first ethnography of ongoing pregnancy trials in the US and UK (University of California Press 2022). Her second book project, Families in the Body: Narratives of Generational Trauma and Healing, examines how experts, patients, and the broader public draw on notions of epigenetic inheritance and trauma to explain why we get sick and how to feel better.

WHAT IS A ONE-DAY CHOIR?
Gaia Music Collective’s One-Day Choir series is an opportunity to sing in a choir for one day only. A celebration of song and the connective power of singing in harmony. An opportunity to build community, make some new friends, and raise our powerfully diverse voices as one.
No auditions. No commitment. No need for perfection.
Just the joy of creating something bigger than ourselves with a room full of beautiful humans!
Whether you’re a vocal ensemble veteran or have never sung in a group before, you are welcome here – all experience levels are valued in Gaia Music Collective!
OUR SONG THIS TIME AROUND
For this One-Day Choir, we’ll be exploring the beautiful, heartbreaking ballad “Too Good at Goodbyes” by the icon, Sam Smith. A queer legend in the music industry, Sam writes music that captures romance so authentically; in the easy moments and the difficult ones. Led and arranged by Gaia’s wonderful facilitating artist, Kenter Davies, we’ll dive into an inspired choral re-arrangement of the song that will highlight the beauty of this tune in new and exciting ways.
Check out the original here
LEARNING THE MUSIC
Sheet music and vocal recordings of each part will be available as learning resources before the event, and our collective goal is to practice the parts ahead of time so that we might come into the gathering with ! This way we can spend our time together really diving into the richness of music-making, rather than trying to teach the parts one by one. We don’t need to know our parts by heart by any means (and you defffinitely don’t have to memorize it), but the stronger we are in our parts coming in, the more we’ll be able to really dig into the fun stuff!
(If this style of learning isn’t your cup of tea, we have other group singing events where you don’t need to prepare at all! Check out our CircleSinging gatherings and House Shows.)
LED AND FACILITATED BY:
This session will be facilitated by the luminous Kenter Davies!

He believes that music is within every person, and that the world needs more opportunities for casual music-making free of judgment and perfectionism. Kenter is thrilled to be facilitating one-night choir events for Gaia over the summer, and cannot wait to see this community grow and change the lives of those within it, just as it has changed his life.

GAIA MUSIC COLLECTIVE MISSION
Gaia Music Collective is a creative community based in Brooklyn, NYC. Our mission is to create connective, playful, accessible spaces for collaborative music-making. Spaces where we can seek expression, growth, freedom, and release in our music. Spaces where we can explore the healing potential of collective music-making and improvisation. Spaces where folks feel safe to express themselves free of judgment or expectation, and to make new friends as our weird, beautiful, authentic selves.
All are welcome in this community. Gaia celebrates humans of all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations, classes, religions, abilities, national origins, languages, and musical experiences. All we ask is that you bring an open mind, a desire to connect, and a willingness to leave judgment of self and others at the door.
Here at Gaia, we believe that music-making – and making that music in community and collaboration with other people – is a fundamental human practice, and this project seeks to build space for that in a day and age when it can so often be hard to find.
Gaia Music Collective seeks to break down divisions between performer and audience and craft experiences where we are ALL part of the music-making. We hope to offer a network and platform for local artists and creatives to connect with other artists, activate their creativity through play and collaboration, and engage their art with other musical minds.
In short – we’re here to sing, to play, to connect, to grow, and to have a good time!

About this event
Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes
There may be no ballet teacher with as deep and wide an influence as Stanley Williams, whose legendary work had an extraordinary impact on his students and the ballet community as a whole. Hired by George Balanchine for the School of American Ballet in 1964, he turned out generations of students who worshiped his quiet, enigmatic teaching style. Revered and renowned internationally, he was also beloved, and his students became his acolytes.
Three former New York City Ballet principal dancers, Peter Boal, Helgi Tomasson, and Robert Weiss, devotees of Williams who all went on to important careers and subsequently to run their own ballet companies, join this program to reflect on their deep connection to Williams and on his mystique. Dance writer Marina Harss moderates the panel. This program is presented in conjunction with The George Balanchine Foundation.
Please join us earlier in the day for a deeper look into a Williams’ classes through demonstration in the Bruno Walter Auditorium at 1 PM.
