Join OHNY for an encore screening of Drop Dead City, a documentary about a critical moment in New York’s history, still resonant today.
“Wonkish but gripping!”
— Owen Gleiberman, Variety
“An extraordinary historical documentary.”
— Richard Brody, The New Yorker
Back by popular demand! On November 17, join Open House New York for a special encore screening of Drop Dead City, a documentary about a critical moment in New York’s history that prompts questions of civic governance and shared commitment to a better society that strongly resonate fifty years later. The film will be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers Michael Rohatyn and Peter Yost, hosted and moderated by Lisa Cortés and John Leguizamo.
New York City, 1975: the city is on the brink of bankruptcy. A nationwide recession, combined with white flight and a declining tax base, abruptly reveals the city’s enormous budget deficit and years of financial mismanagement. Without funds to pay city workers, Mayor Abraham Beame imposes unprecedented service cuts leading to strikes, protests, and disorder and his appeal for federal aid is notoriously rebuffed, immortalized in the Daily News headline, Ford to City: Drop Dead.
Drop Dead City, a documentary film by Peter Yost and Michael Rohatyn, explores how this crisis came to be and the eleventh-hour deal, brokered by a coalition of business, labor, and civic leaders, that rescued the city’s finances, but with lasting costs to independent governance, public services, and civic ideals of what New York should offer its residents.
FILM SYNOPSIS
Drop Dead City (2024) documents New York’s fiscal crisis of 1975, an extraordinary, overlooked episode in urban American history that saw an already-crumbling city of 8 million people brought to the edge of bankruptcy and social chaos by a perfect storm of debt, greed, ambitious social policy, and poor governance.
Directed by Peter Yost and Michael Rohatyn, the film weaves firsthand accounts with vibrant archival footage. It features some of the city’s legendary reporters, the urban scribes who documented daily life in New York, including Linda Greenhouse, Fred Ferretti, Charlayne Hunter Gault, and Gabe Pressman. Elected officials, union leaders and others involved in the civic life of the city also make appearances, including NYC Mayor David Dinkins, Congressman Charles Rangel, NYS Senator Manfred Ohrenstein, PR guru Howard Rubenstein, former NYC Comptroller Harrison Jay Goldin, former NYS Budget Director Peter Goldmark, Municipal Assistance Corporation Treasurer Donna Shalala, Public Advocate for New York City Betsy Gotbaum, and many more. Drop Dead City won the prestigious Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for film.
Pay what you wish community tickets are available for New York City residents who are SNAP or WIC recipients or public housing residents, students and teachers at New York City schools, and nonprofit professionals working in the environmental sector and/or serving low-income communities in New York City. To request community tickets, please complete this form.

Performing Magic Hour, a set of early material from TAAS’s first 6 albums, played live by all original members + support from Bull Thieves.
The American Analog Set formed in Fort Worth, TX sometime in 1995 and gained its
footing through the nineties and early aughts in Austin, TX. From their humble
beginnings recording their mellow rock albums in living rooms and home studios, The
American Analog Set went on to release 7 full length albums, a multitude of highly-
sought-after EPs and toured the world – from house shows and clubs to
headlining tours and festivals- while gathering a loyal global fanbase. Though the band
went on hiatus after the release and tour in support of Set Free in 2005, they never truly
went away as their music continued to make their way onto playlists while fans patiently
waited and hoped for more.
Formed in Brooklyn in 2009 by three Texas ex-pats (Lance Scott Walker, Birdlikebats, and Nicholas Phelps), Bull Thieves released oneself-titled album before going underground in 2011, after which Walker pivotedto work on his books about Houston hip-hop (Houston Rap Tapes,DJ Screw: A Life In Slow Revolution) and the other band membersrelocated. In 2024, Walker fully rebooted the band in New York with his best friend, the artistJoan LeMay (Quantum Criminals: Ramblers, Wild Gamblers, and Other Sole Survivors From theSongs of Steely Dan) playing bass, and after a few shows as a duo they were joined bydrummer Liana Katz (Brooklyn Cyclones Surf Squad) at the center of a larger collectivethat includes collaborations with the original Bull Thieves as well as Houston producersJGtheengineer and Stenographer. The core trio of Walker, LeMay, and Katz plays anoisy grade of indie rock that descends from Texas punk threaded with shoegaze and the rap/jazz/funk/R&B back catalogues that have informed their other artistic pursuits.Bull Thieves released the 7-inch “Pasture Kills” b/w “Wild Own” in May 2025, with analbum,Rattlesnake & Swan, to follow.

As an evolution of, and a departure from, her best-selling journals, Practice You and Being You, Brower draws on her memories and life experiences, her practice of yoga and Nonviolent Communication, and more recently, her study of Zen, to offer us a road map for living with presence and reverence.
Each chapter offers teachings, contemplations, and prompts on a single theme, such as:
Establishing presence in your daily life
Bearing witness to small moments of reverence
Embracing the art of not knowing
Invoking the wisdom of emptiness and stillness
and more.
She also includes 45 pieces of her full-color artwork to inspire deeper insight and creativity as readers explore each theme. This is not a manual for self-improvement; it is a field guide for self-remembrance, for cultivating tenderness toward your own heart, and for showing up to life completely, with purpose and heartfulness.

Dr. Liza G. Steele explores what our instincts say before our politics do.
Why does immigration trigger such intense reactions in America — empathy for some, fear for others?
In this fast-paced Brains Over Brew lecture, sociologist Dr. Liza G. Steele taps into the psychology behind one of the most emotionally charged issues in American life. Instead of focusing on policy or politics, she reveals the hidden forces — evolutionary instincts, group identity, media cues, and local culture — that shape how Americans react to newcomers long before they ever think about laws or data.
You’ll explore:
The neuroscience of threat perception and why “outsiders” can feel dangerous
Why some Americans feel hope around immigration while others feel loss
How class, place, and identity shape emotional reactions
Why small towns and big cities experience immigration so differently
Why debates almost never change minds — but stories do
This Brains Over Brew session taps into a surprising truth: immigration disagreements aren’t just political… they’re psychological.
You’ll leave with a deeper, more human understanding of fear, belonging, empathy, and the hidden forces shaping modern America.
