Book Launch: Alexandra Freidus presents Unequal Lessons: School Diversity and Educational Inequality in New York City

In conversation with Max Freedman

Wine reception to follow

Local educational ethnographer and author Alexandra Freidus launches Unequal Lessons, diving deep into the roots of racial inequality in diversifying schools in New York City. Though educators and advocates often focus on diversity out of a real desire to make a positive difference in students’ lives, Unequal Lessons makes clear the gaps between good intentions and educational injustice. By drawing on students’ first-hand experiences, Unequal Lessons asks how we can better understand both the opportunities and the limits of school diversity and integration. Max Freedman, co-creator and co-host of School Colors, joins Freidus for an in-depth discussion on the book, before an audience Q&A and signing.

——————————————————————–

A powerful and illuminating memoir that exposes the stark and rarely-seen reality of influencing as a career.

Lee Tilghman—also known as @LeeFromAmerica—was one of the very first wellness influencers. To her nearly 400,000 followers, she shared daily updates and advice on everything from skincare and sleep hacks to smoothie bowls, travel tips, and workout routines. She embodied #SelfCare. Her sponsorships with such brands as Madewell and Subaru netted an income of over $300,000 a year. On the grid, her life seemed perfect.

But behind her carefully curated posts, Tilghman was in crisis, suffocating from the unrelenting demand of keeping up her online facade. Her friendships frayed from an inability to enjoy any activity, even a simple dinner, without taking hundreds of photos. She found herself viewing everything she did as potential content for Instagram. The more she shared, the more her followers craved. Her romantic relationships suffered from the pressure to “hard launch.” Her job’s focus on food led her to develop a severe fixation on healthy eating. At her lowest point, she looked around her apartment to realize every item she owned had been given to her by brands in exchange for posting. After a stay in a mental health facility to address her disordered eating and psychological decline, Tilghman quit influencing as her primary career and set out to discover who she really was.

If You Don’t Like This, I Will Die is a sharp, self-aware look at life inside the influencer economy and a relatable story for anyone who has struggled with the unreasonableness of online expectations. With over half of Gen Z aspiring to be influencers, nearly three out of five teen girls experiencing “persistent sadness and hopelessness,” and the US Surgeon General calling for a social media warning label, Tilghman’s memoir couldn’t be more timely and necessary.

Lee Tilghman began blogging when she was seventeen, amassing a large following for her blogs For the Love of Peanut Butter and Lee From America, both of which helped shape the early wellness influencer landscape. She was born and raised in Connecticut and currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. If You Don’t Like This, I Will Die is her first book.

Matt Klein is a culture theorist, strategist and writer studying our media and social shifts to advise partners on the future. He speaks internationally, runs a popular newsletter titled ZINE, and is Head of Global Foresight at Reddit.

THE FILM

By Design

Amanda Kramer | 2025 | US | 99 mins

Upon seeing a chair with a gorgeous body – sturdy frame, meticulous handiwork, classic design – Camille, a woman who’s never been particularly jealous of any other woman, realizes that she truly envies the life of a perfect piece of furniture. Its usefulness even in utter plainness. Its providing of comfort, relief to all who need it. Through the wishing magic of the enduring body-swap genre, Camille and this chair exchange form. So begins a nightmare of stillness and silence. A woman’s being trapped inside of an object, an object’s essence weighing down a woman’s figure. Feminine rivalry and resentment taken to its most ludicrous, surreal extreme. Presented in partnership with the Meatpacking District Business Improvement District.

Hosted by Patrick Sauer & David J. Roth

Featuring authors Michael Kosta and Giri Nathan

Tickets starting at $11

Created and hosted by writers Patrick Sauer and David J. Roth, Squawkin’ Sports is an ongoing series featuring book chats with authors who write about playing games. This month, Sauer and Roth chat with comic and Emmy-Award winning host of The Daily Show Michael Kosta, author of Lucky Loser: Adventures in Tennis and Comedy, and prize-winning tennis journalist and senior correspondent at The Second Serve Giri Nathan, author of Changeover: A Young Rivalry and a New Era of Men’s Tennis.A wildly funny and insightful memoir, Lucky Loser follows Michael Kosta’s unlikely journey from professional tennis player (#864 in the world) to professional comedian (there’s no ranking system in comedy but he’s probably . . . top 50?). From misadventures through the backwaters of professional tennis to the humbling setbacks of comedy, Lucky Loser is a heart-filled story of making your own luck, the universal experience of failure, and the many ways in which we all inevitably lose on the way to success. A Bloomberg 10 Best Books of Summer 2025, Changeover tells the story of the epic rivalry of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, as told by Giri Nathan, called “the best tennis writer in America” (Brian Phillips, The Ringer). Punctuated with humor, brimming with insight, and rooted in a true fan’s love of the game, this work of elevated sports journalism is a captivating primer to the rivalry poised to define the next decade of the sport.

Ticket options:

$11: 1 beer

$42: 1 beer + Lucky Loser

$42: 1 beer + Changeover

About this event
How is New York City protecting waterfront neighborhoods from the impact of sea level rise and severe storms? Join Open House New York for a boat tour and hear from urban infrastructure leaders at NYC Economic Development Corporation, NYC Department of Environmental Protection, NYC Department of Design and Construction, and the Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice.

Since the devastating storm surge caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, city agencies have been working to develop and implement various infrastructure projects to adapt the built environment to the new realities of climate change. In Lower Manhattan, an area particularly vulnerable to flooding, the city has made and continues to plan significant investments—from raised shorelines to floodgates—that not only protect residents, businesses, and cultural assets, but also upgrade recreational spaces and increase waterfront access.

On this sunset tour, learn about the implementation of the city’s resiliency plans along the shorelines of Lower Manhattan, East River, and Red Hook, and hear about the complexity of planning, designing, and building these infrastructure projects that will shape the waterfront for generations to come.
