Nicer Tuesdays: June @ SVA Theatre 333 West 23rd Street New York, NY 10011
Jun 2 all-day

Overview
Nicer Tuesdays is a monthly talks event, bringing together speakers from across the creative world.

Kelli Anderson, Parallel Press, Noble Signs and Angela Lian: Tickets now available for June’s Nicer Tuesdays in New York!

Join us for our second Nicer Tuesdays event of the year in New York, where you can catch brilliant talks on publication design, paper engineering, Tiktok dances, video collage and the age-old craft of sign painting.

Summer is round the corner in New York and we’re back soon for our next Nicer Tuesdays, bringing yet another awe inspiring line-up of speakers back to the SVA Theatre on 2 June 2026.

At the event you can expect to hear talks from graphic design studio and publisher Parallel Press on its latest book Astro Black: The first book to catalogue the story of 18 Black astronauts, pilots, scientists and engineers who embarked on journeys into space. We’ll also be joined by graphic designer and performance artist Angela Lian for an insight into how she uses her body to merge dance, video collage and design to create a physical practice that raises awareness for disability in the art and design world.

Brooklyn-based design studio and New York sign painting icons Noble Signs’ will also be taking to the Nicer tuesdays stage to share some insights into the time-honoured art of handmade signage, and finally, for our Q&A slot the legendary graphic designer and paper engineer Kelli Anderson will be in conversation with our US editor-at-large Elizabeth Goodspeed.

The event will take place on Tuesday 2 June at the School of Visual Arts Theatre in Chelsea. Doors will open at 6:30 pm and the talks will begin around 7pm. The full address is SVA Theatre, 333 West 23rd Street, New York, NY10011. It’s a seated event, so get there early to ensure a seat and pick up a drink beforehand!

Kelli Anderson

Graphic designer and paper engineer Kelli Anderson is best known for two things: her invention of the creative technique we now call Risograph animation and her tendency to design and make “impossible” things with paper – like her latest book Alphabet in Motion: both a feat in engineering and an ingenious interactive pop up book that takes readers through an immersive and tactile history of typography. The designers previous titles also include This Book is a Camera, a working 4×5 camera, made from paper and This Book is a Planetarium, a publication that unfolds into a whole host of paper gadgets. Sitting down with our US editor Elizabeth Goodspeed, Kelli will be inviting us into her tactile, world of publication design.

Parallel Press

Akoua Smith and renald Louissaint and will be joining us from graphic design studio and publishing house Parallel Press to talk us through its new book Astro Black: the untold story of Black Americans in space. The first book to catalogue the story of 18 Black astronauts, pilots, scientists and engineers who embarked on journeys into space with Nasa, the publication archives stories, interviews, photos, essays and data to archive the historical and cultural significance that African Americans have made to human space travel. Akoua and renald will be taking us behind the scenes on the research and design decisions that brought the project into being.

Angela Lian

Angela Lian’s practice brings together two things that normally orbit quite separate worlds: dance and design. The graphic designer first caught our attention in 2023 with a series of videos that blended TikTok dance trends with unexpected design approaches and we’ve been enamoured ever since. While most of her work exists online, the artist is not a traditional creator, she brings images of herself and work into the format of social media videos to blur the boundaries between art and content. At June’s Nicer Tuesdays in New York Angela will be talking about her personal journey with chronic pain and illness and how she has found a way for her creative work with physicality and movement to support her body’s capacity through video and collage.

Noble Signs

Brooklyn-based design studio Noble Signs’ creative philosophy is “design should always start with a pencil.” A team that turns its hands to branding and identity design all the way to the time-honoured art of handmade signage, custom typography and lettering, the studio seeks to explore new approaches to traditional craft. Noble Sign’s co-founder David Barnett will be joining us for our next Nicer Tuesdays event to give us an insight into the creative ideas that are shaping the studio behind the scenes and how they are fusing art, design and traditional techniques to bring the vanishing classic signage of New York City back into being.

Timings for the evening: doors open at 6.30pm and the talks will begin around 7pm.

Please be aware that photography and filming may be taken at this event for marketing and promotional purposes. If you do not want to be photographed or filmed, please speak to our team on the day.

Also, if you are in need of disability access, please email hello@nicertuesdays.com so we can arrange assistance with the venue team.

Sign up to the Nicer Tuesdays newsletter and you’ll get first dibs on tickets, plus we’ll send you all the videos from the previous month’s event. Now and again we’ll also share some news from our sponsors and event partners too.

Terms and conditions

Nicer Tuesdays is an 18+ event; please bring your ID as we will be conducting ID checks at the entrance.

The acclaimed, prize-winning #1 New York Times bestselling writer returns with a moving, luminous novel that reminds us of the sweetness and impermanence of life and the power of connection to defy time.

When Daphne Fuller and her husband Jonathan visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, they notice an older, white-haired gentleman following them. The man turns out to be Eddie Triplett, her former stepfather, who had been married to her mother for a little more than year when Daphne was nine. Now fifty-three, Daphne hasn’t seen Eddie for many years, not since the fateful event that changed the direction of both their lives. Meeting again, time falls away; while their relationship was brief, it had a profound impact on them both, and now that they are reunited, they have no intention of ever being separated again.

Whistler is a story about two adults looking back over the choices they made, and the choices that were made for them. It’s a story about bravery, memory, the often small yet consequential moments that define our lives, and the endless stream of loss that in time comes for us all. Beautiful in its simplicity, it is ultimately about how love endures, and how the feeling of being known by one other person, even for a short period of time, can change everything.

Ann Patchett is the author of novels, works of nonfiction, and children’s books. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the PEN/Faulkner, the Women’s Prize for Fiction in the UK, and the Book Sense Book of the Year. Her novel The Dutch House was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Her work has been translated into more than thirty languages, and Time magazine named her one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. President Biden awarded her the National Humanities Medal in recognition of her contributions to American culture. She lives in Nashville, Tennessee, where she is the owner of Parnassus Books.

Emma Straub is the New York Times bestselling author of six books for adults: the novels This Time Tomorrow, All Adults Here, The Vacationers, Modern Lovers, Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures, and the short story collection Other People We Married. She is a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow and her work has been published in more than 20 languages. Emma and her husband own Books Are Magic, an independent bookstore in Brooklyn, New York.

ABOUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN HER:
Jane Trevally is walking her dogs on her country estate when a small white terrier appears, alone and with no sign of the teenaged girl he’d been staying with nearby. When the teenager is reported missing, Jane offers to return the dog to his registered owner, hours away in London. Arriving at a run-down house called Thornwood in the deepest backwaters of Hampstead, she is immediately on alert—because Jane has a dark history with this house.

The man who answers the door is not the man that Jane remembers from her past. He is cagey, and claims to know nothing about the missing teenage girl. Then, through the window of the house, Jane catches a glimpse of a haunted-looking woman.

Conjuring her memories from twenty-five years ago, Jane knows this unsettling house holds the key—to the missing teenager, to her own traumatic story, and to the dark, dark secrets of the past.
