Lets get together for a cause!

We invite you to embrace the beautiful spices and flavours of authentic Ethiopian food. This Ethiopian Fundraising Dinner has been organised to share in the culture of Ethiopia as well as raise funds to provide seeds for the community of Hudad in Ethiopia.

Due to global warming and lack of access to education their farming has suffered leaving the community of Hudad to rely on International food aid to survive. We aim to raise funds to provide seeds for the villages of Hudad. Then Friends of the Hudad will purchase seeds from their local supplier and facilitate a trainer who will support the villages planting, growing and harvesting the crop.

Friends of the Hudad is a not for profit organisation aiming to facilitate environmental, social and economic prosperity in the community Hudad.

African Landscapes Dialogue @ Horn of Africa Regional Environment Center Gullele Botanic Garden Ethiopia | | |

Those working to achieve sustainable development, food security and climate resilience in Africa, please join us for this powerful multi-day learning and sharing event.

Leaders from community organizations, farmer groups, local governments, food and agri-businesses, NGOs and other stakeholders across Africa are working together through integrated landscape management to achieve multiple goals from their land and resources. They take different entry points and use different names, including forest landscape restoration, model forests, sustainable land and water management, and agriculture green growth corridors, to name just a few. If you are one of those people, the African Landscapes Dialogue is designed for you.

This learning event will provide a dynamic forum for leaders to share their diverse experiences with implementing integrated landscape management. They will participate in skills-building sessions, learn about new planning, management and monitoring tools demonstrated by their creators, visit firsthand landscapes where the power of integrated landscape approaches are visible, and more.
The African Landscapes Dialogue will gather the diverse communities of practice in sustainable landscapes at the beautiful campus of HOAREC&N in Ethiopia to learn together through:

Sharing best practices from their own landscapes
Sharing lessons learned from research and experiences across landscapes and countries
Exchanging tools and resources
Developing collaborative actions
Facilitated cross-sectoral conversation
Optional study tours of landscapes

This event is in service of The African Landscapes Action Plan, agreed at the 2014 Landscapes for People, Food and Nature in Africa conference in Nairobi and endorsed by the African Union’s New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD). The plan emphasized the importance of capacity-development to advance integrated landscape management across Africa.
The conference is hosted by the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Center & Network (HOAREC&N) at their meetingplace in the Gullele Botanic Garden in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Late Colonial with Charmaine Craig & Maaza Mengiste @ Asian American Writers' Workshop 112 West 27th Street #600 New York, NY 10001 United States
May 17 @ 7:00 pm

Come hear two crucial novelists who’re narrating the colonial and postcolonial nation. Chomp on free Burmese food from our catering partner, Burma Noodle Bar. We’re celebrating the new novel by author-actress Charmaine Craig: the semi-autobiographical epic Miss Burma. Pulitzer Finalist Laila Lalami calls the book “a sweeping novel of Burma and its complicated history, told from the perspective of people whose voices have been systematically erased from the official record.” Charmaine will talk with Maaza Mengiste, whose novel Beneath the Lion’s Gaze tells the last days of Ethiopian ruler Haile Selassie and the 1970s Ethiopian Civil War. If you loved Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko or Chaitali Sen’s The Pathless Sky, don’t miss this thrilling discussion of late colonial violence, mass revolt, postcolonial malaise, and the personal stories that comprise history from below. This event is co-sponsored by Columbia Center for International History and NYSEAN (New York South East Asian Network)!

Charmaine Craig’s Miss Burma (Grove Atlantic 2017) tells the story of Myanmar from British colonial rule to the assassination of Aung San and the student protests of 1962. The focal point are two characters loosely based on Craig’s grandparents: Benny and Khin, a member of the persecuted Karen minority, who both go into hiding during the Japanese occupation during World War II―a journey that will have historical ramifications. The novel follows Aung San’s ascension and assassination and the country’s subsequent civil war, a brutal conflict through which the state viciously targeted the Karen minority. Miss Burma also follows Benny and Khin’s eldest child, Louisa, who becomes the country’s first beauty queen but must reckon with her family’s past, the West’s ongoing covert dealings in her country, and her own loyalty to the Karen cause. A rich, subtextually layered novel that’s stylistically reminiscent of Sara Suleri’s Meatless Days and John Berger’s G, Miss Burma is―in the words of Aminatta Forna―a book that explores “how we are all actors in our histories and the histories of our nations.” A professor at UC Riverside, Charmaine Craig wrote the novel The Good Men (Riverhead), a national bestseller translated into six languages. She previously worked as an actor in film and television.

Addis Ababa-born Maaza Mengiste’s debut novel Beneath the Lion’s Gaze (Norton 2011) narrates the Ethiopian civil war through dual characters: Emperor Haile Selassie, depicted in his last days before revolution, and Hailu, a respected doctor who must protect his family from violence and is also asked by the regime to treat a tortured political prisoner. Named one of the 10 best contemporary African books by The Guardian, the novel led the New York Times to state that “Mengiste joins a group of other young Africans writing in English whose subject is the continent’s postcolonial civil wars. They are unafraid of depicting the vicious violence Frantz Fanon’s ‘wretched of the earth’ are capable of and showing how Fanon’s colonially oppressed grew into master oppressors themselves.” A contributor to the New Yorker and Granta and named a new literary idol by New York magazine, Mengiste served as a writer for the social-activist documentary film GIRL RISING, which features the voices of actors such as Meryl Streep, Liam Neeson, and Cate Blanchett.

This Sunday’s program will be devoted to some of the varied cultural traditions coming out of the large Ethiopian-American population in the DC area.

Gezachew Teklemariam is an accomplished and highly regarded vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. He performs traditional Ethiopian music on masinko and krar, among other instruments. He will be joined by a dancer.

Tsedaye Makonnen is an Ethiopian-American interdisciplinary artist, a mother and a former doula. Recurring themes present in her work are identity, colorism, womanhood, ritual and kinship. She’s particularly drawn to conveying the African Diaspora’s creative responses to assimilating, destroying and recreating the Self within new and/or hostile territories, whether that happens to be a new country or a hospital room. As of late, she has been connecting the forced migrations taking place in DC and abroad through performance art and installations.

Tsedaye has performed in D.C. at the Corcoran Gallery, Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. She’s a part of NY’s performance art scene and has shown at Five Myles Gallery, El Museo del Barrio, Grace Exhibition Space, Panoply Performance Lab, ABCNoRio, and more. She has an upcoming performance at Pratt Film Institute, a part of Myrtle Avenue’s Black Art Story. She is also involved in a touring performance art collective titled BlackGirlLit. A screening of#BlackGirlLit: Between Literature, Performance & Memory will take place at MoCADA during 3DotZine’s fest. She currently has two collaborative video performances up at MOAD in San Francisco a part of Helina Metafaria’s solo exhibition Home//Free. And another video performance installation at Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery titled Holy Water: Bleach Bloodbath series, a part of the Us Vs. Them group exhibition.

During her Artist-In-Residence at 39th Street Gallery in Brentwood, Md, Tsedaye created a participatory performance series that took place in DC for What’s Going On Shaw. She presented a series of performance art incorporating traditions from her Ethiopian-American background within the current microcultures of Shaw, where she was born. In blending the rituals of Ethiopian coffee ceremonies with the culture of today’s grab & go coffee, Tsedaye and a group of participants from the community performed a coffee ceremony with a twist that nods to the changing landscape of Shaw. She activated the space in front of local Shaw businesses and streets; including well-known Zenebach Restaurant and Creative Time’s DC Summit. As well as engaged in bridging the gap between the microcultures by helping form new bonds and tighten existing ones. This piece of work was titled ‘Common Ground’ in which the children of Shaw Community Center, where she teaches visual art and social practice, assisted her in making 100 ceramic coffee cups to use during the performance. In this piece, she wanted to reflect the history, leaders and present day situation of this historical district.
