No auditions. No judgment. No need for perfection. Just the joy of singing in harmony with a room full of beautiful humans.
WHAT IS A ONE-DAY CHOIR?
Gaia Music Collective’s One-Day Choir series is an opportunity to sing in a choir for one day only. A celebration of song and the connective power of singing in harmony. An opportunity to build community, make some new friends, and raise our powerfully diverse voices as one.
No auditions. No commitment. No judgment or need for perfection.
Just the joy of creating something bigger than ourselves with a room full of beautiful humans!
For each choir, we pick a piece of music to rehearse and sing our hearts out to. In our time together, we’ll:
Play some fun singing games, warmups and connection games
Work through the piece section by section
Break down the lyrics and emotions at play in the song
Shape some key musical moments
And record some casual rehearsal videos of the piece to have for ourselves and share with the greater Gaia community
Whether you’re a vocal ensemble veteran or have never sung in a group before, you are welcome here – all experience levels are valued in Gaia Music Collective!
OUR SONG THIS TIME AROUND
The second track on Rosalía’s epic album “LUX,” “Reliquia,” finds the sacred in the human and the human in the sacred. Together we’ll celebrate what is lost and found in each of us as we journey through life. In this arrangement for choir/viola, our voices will inhabit all the drama of a soaring string section, and all the intimacy of a lonely piano. All levels of Spanglish experience are welcome!
LEARNING THE MUSIC
Sheet music and vocal recordings of each part will be available as learning resources at least a week before the event, to accommodate multiple ways of learning. These resources will either be included in your order confirmation or sent out in an email!
The intention is for us to come into the gathering having already familiarized ourselves with the parts, so that we can spend our time together really diving into the joys of connection and expression in the music rather than simply teaching parts one by one. That being said, we’re just doing this for ourselves, so there’s no need to stress over it (and definitely no need to memorize it or get it “perfect”, ever)! It’s also often easier to sing in person, when the rest of our part-buddies are singing the part with us. The community is here to support! Our primary intention here is simply to have fun and make some great music.
(If this style of learning isn’t your cup of tea, we have other group singing events where you don’t need to prepare at all! Check out our CircleSinging gatherings and House Shows.)
LED and FACILITATED BY:
This event will be facilitated by the brilliant Sofia Campoamor.
Sofía Campoamor (she/her) first started writing songs to make school projects more fun. This lighthearted approach to academics led her to study music at Yale University, where she performed a cappella music around the world as the first woman member of the Whiffenpoofs.
Now that school has given way to a music career, Sofía looks for ways to make her songwriting itself more fun! Her 2023 36-song cycle “to fall in love with anyone…” was structured as a daily challenge answering the “36 questions that lead to love” as song prompts. In 2022, Sofía’s word game project #wordlesong gained popularity on Tiktok and generated several of the songs for her debut album “if you knew, i couldn’t tell,” an indie folk collection that blends her love of intricate vocal harmony with dreamy acoustic soundscapes to tell tales of love, longing and friendship.
When she’s not touring or recording, Sofía volunteers for the nonprofit Hear Your Song, leading collaborative songwriting sessions with children managing serious illness and complex health needs. She also enjoys teaching music to kids ages 5 to 80 and singing with the Oratory Choir of St. Boniface as the head cantor. Sofía is so grateful to call Gaia Music Collective her creative home, and loves co-creating with the community at every collaborative open mic, songwriting circle, and choir!
PHYSICAL ACCESSIBILITY:
This is venue is wheelchair accessible!

CANCELLATION POLICY

We want as many people to be able to experience these gatherings as possible, and since capacity is limited, each spot is precious.

COMMUNITY GUIDELINES
At Gaia Music Collective, we are dedicated to building a community where creativity, collaboration, and care thrive. The values listed here shape how we work together, how we engage with the world, and how we move toward upholding these principles.
OUR MISSION
Gaia Music Collective is an NYC-based creative community seeking to foster a more connected world through collective music-making. Founded in June of 2021 in a living room in Brooklyn, this project was born out of a desire to create accessible, inclusive, playful spaces for people to explore connection, expression, healing, and release through collaborative song – spaces where folks feel empowered to make music free of judgment or expectation, and to make new friends as our full, beautiful, authentic selves.
We believe that communal music-making is a fundamental human practice, and this project seeks to build spaces for folks to nurture their relationship to music, whether they’re shower singers, professional musicians, or anything in between.
All are welcome in this community. Gaia seeks to foster spaces of belonging for humans of all ages, races, genders, sexual orientations, classes, religions, abilities, national origins, languages, and musical experiences. All we ask is that you bring an open mind, a desire to connect, and a willingness to leave judgment of self and others at the door.

Booker Prize winner and National Book Award finalist George Saunders presents Vigil at Congregation Beth Elohim.
Booker Prize winner and National Book Award finalist George Saunders joins us at Congregation Beth Elohim to discuss his new novel, Vigil. He’ll be in conversation with Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, author of Chain-Gang All-Stars and Friday Black.
Tickets include a hardcover copy of Vigil, which will be available for pickup at the event. Books will be pre-signed and you will have the opportunity to have them personalized by George Saunders.
Doors open at 6:30 PM.
About Vigil:
A wise, playful, electric novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling, Booker Prize–winning author of Lincoln in the Bardo, taking place at the bedside of an oil company CEO in the twilight hours of his life as he is ferried from this world into the next.
Not for the first time, Jill “Doll” Blaine finds herself hurtling toward earth, reconstituting as she falls, right down to her favorite black pumps. She plummets towards her newest charge, yet another soul she must usher into the afterlife, and lands headfirst in the circular drive of his ornate mansion.
She has performed this sacred duty 343 times since her own death. Her charges, as a rule, have been greatly comforted in their final moments. But this charge, she soon discovers, isn’t like the others: the powerful K. J. Boone will not be consoled, because he has nothing to regret. He lived a big, bold life, and the world is better for it. Isn’t it?
Vigil transports us, careening, through the wild final evening of an epic, complicated life. Crowds of people and animals—worldly and otherworldly, alive and dead—arrive, clamoring for a reckoning. Birds swarm the dying man’s room, a black calf grazes on the love seat, a man from a distant, drought-ravaged village materializes, two oil-business cronies from decades past show up with chilling plans for Boone’s postdeath future.
With the acuity and explosive imagination we’ve come to expect, George Saunders takes on the gravest issues of our time—the menace of corporate greed, the toll of capitalism, the environmental perils of progress—and, in the process, spins a tale that encompasses life and death, good and evil, and the thorny question of absolution.
George Saunders is the author of thirteen books, including the novel Lincoln in the Bardo, which won the Booker Prize, and the story collections Pastoralia and Tenth of December, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. He has received fellowships from the Lannan Foundation, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Guggenheim Foundation. He is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and a PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in Short Fiction, and was included in Time’s list of the one hundred most influential people in the world. He teaches in the creative writing program at Syracuse University.
Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah is the New York Times-bestselling author of Friday Black. His work has appeared in The New York Times Book Review, Esquire, The Paris Review, and elsewhere. He was a National Book Foundation’s “5 Under 35” honoree, the winner of the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award and the Saroyan Prize, and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Award for Best First Book, along with many other honors. Raised in Spring Valley, New York, he now lives in the Bronx.

Learn the basic skills of curling and how to play full game.
Like millions worldwide, you were captivated. The first time you saw Curling on TV, you had so many questions. What’s sweeping for? How do they glide on the ice? Could I do that? The short answer is “yes, you can!”
Try Curling is designed for people who have never curled before. In this 90-minute on the ice session, you will learn everything you need to know to play and appreciate the Olympic sport of curling:
Rules and scoring
Sliding and delivering the stone
Sweeping – why we do it, how it’s done
Basic strategy
Curling etiquette and culture
Following instruction, we will play a mini-game so you can test your skills on this ice!
Complimentary beer and water is available after your session.
What will you need to bring?
Clothes with a full range of motion. We advise against jeans. Also, victorian hoop-skirts. Those won’t help either.
Layers. Lakeside rink is covered but semi-exposed. Even if it’s cold out, you will be engaging in athletic activity, so you’ll want the option to remove a layer.
Wear athletic shoes. If you can curl in high heels, you should be the instructor.
Otherwise, we provide all the curling equipment and a room to store your bags while you’re on the ice.
LOCATION: LeFrak Center at Lakeside, Prospect Park, 171 East Dr, Brooklyn NY 11225. Take the Q train to Parkside Av. or otherwise find your way to the Parkside and Ocean Avenue entrance to Prospect Park, enter the park and walk up the hill.
REFUNDS: Due to the nature of booking ice time and instructors, we unfortunately canont offer refunds to this event after 30 days before the event.
WEATHER OR FACILITY CANCELLATION: On rare occasions we have to reschedule or cancel due to weather or facility issues. If this happens, we will attempt to reschedule you. Please check your email on the day of the event to make sure we are still curling. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to reschedule you. If that is the case, you will be refunded.
