Adrianne Lenker steps away from Big Thief for a very special and intimate solo performance in Jersey City.
About this Event
Adrianne Lenker
Adrianne Lenker has been writing songs since she was 10 years old. Her “back story” has been well documented in various interviews and profiles for Big Thief over the last 3 years. Despite, or more likely because of the constant touring and studio work, the last few years have been some of the most prolific for Lenker as a writer. Songs pop out at soundcheck. They pop out on late night drives between cities. They pop out in green rooms, hotel stairwells, gardens, and kitchens around the world.
In the hands of Lenker songwriting is not an old dead craft. It is alive. It is vital. With little regard for standard album cycle practice or the idea of resting at all, Lenker set out to make a document. Songs can be slippery and following 2+ years on the road with Big Thief, Lenker felt a growing need to document this particular time in her life in an intimate, immediate way.
“I want to archive the songs in their original forms every few years,” Lenker explained, ahead of the album’s release. “My first solo record I made was Hours Were the Birds. I had just turned 21 and moved to New York City where I was sleeping in a warehouse, working in a restaurant and photographing pigeons. Now five years later, another skin is being shed.”
Following a two-week road trip through the southwestern United States, Lenker headed into the studio with longtime friend Luke Temple. Temple put on his loosely fitting, bright orange, 100% wool producer hat and for one week they made music. The songs chosen for this collection were the songs that felt the most alive in the room. These are not castaways or B-sides. Some of these songs had been alive for years while some were written just days before the session. Some appeared in different future forms – notably on Big Thief’s U.F.O.F LP – some did not. The thread that connects these songs is not something that can easily be put down in words. Intuition connects these songs. They are a record of a time.
With this collection, Lenker further illuminated to the listening public what those close to her already knew; here we have a songwriter of the highest order, following her voice and the greater Voices that pass through her with an unflinching openness and clarity of translation.
“With a great imagination for melody, Lenker conjures a world of mingled trauma and love.” – Pitchfork
“Somewhere to conceal and heal yourself when the world outside feels a little daunting.” – The Line of Best Fit
“…as complex as ever: delicate and strong, soothing yet uneasy, each listen revealing new emotional depth.” – The Skinny
“Adrianne Lenker excels by tapping into the core of the human soul in the most tender, gentle and vivid way possible.” – Paste
“A collection of poetic shards, bruised and tender and fierce…steeped in mystery and loss and a sense of esoteric humanity.” – Various Small Flames
Matt Bachmann
Matt Bachmann (b. 1988, Chicago) is a musician/composer/songwriter based in New York. He’s collaborated as a bass plucker with Mega Bog, Hand Habits, Happy You, iji and Ed Askew and has crafted tunes under the monikers Big Eater, Pachanga and his own name. Bachmann’s debut Orindal Release, Unconditional Love, came out in 2018.
Walking Preference is Bachmann’s most recent collection of passionate instrumentals, expanding on the sound vs song work previously explored on earlier records. Recorded almost entirely on a Roland JX-3P, a Yamaha digital piano and a D.I. Guitar, Walking Preference inhabits an animated universe inspired by Miyazaki films and Nintendo fantasies — a world both natural and unreal. Air and space have been carefully manufactured. The playful drones and compositions within are full of bubbles and sharp turns while still adhering to the core tenants of Bachmann’s sound— that of beauty and space. Bachmann’s music is more sky than earth. Walking Preference zooms out.

About The Teacher
Margie Newman is a certified Kripalu Yoga Teacher (RYT-200). She is passionate about helping students connect mind, body, and breath in a Hatha yoga practice that provides more than physical benefits. Margie incorporates elements of yoga philosophy and mindfulness meditation in her classes, helping students to build self-awareness and cultivate skills they can use on and off the yoga mat. She brings a diverse background as a university instructor, creative director, and public speaking coach into her yoga teaching practice. She believes in the power of yoga to build connection and community and is excited to bring Community Yoga to the Third Space.

Candlelight Yin Yoga
If you want to calm and balance your body and mind, this is where you’ll find your zen. Yin yoga poses are held for 3 -5 minutes at a time. This meditative practice is designed to target your deeper connective tissues or fascia, restoring length and elasticity. We’ll use props so your body can release into the posture instead of actively flexing or engaging the muscles. Like meditation, it may make you feel antsy at first, but stick with it for a few classes and its restorative powers might have you hooked. People who need to stretch and unwind will enjoy Yin yoga.
Visit website www.yogatoka.com for pricing and class schedule.

We know everyone needs support during this time. Harlem Park to Park is here to help.
About this Event
The severity of the COVID19 pandemic in New York has hurt our local restaurants; led to the loss of local employment for many restaurant workers; and put a huge strain on our healthcare workers.
Restaurant workers and healthcare workers now need our support. Together we can get through this crisis. Harlem Park to Park and our community partners have teamed up with Harlem restaurants to launch the Harlem Food Pantry.
The program provides:
Groceries for pick up by Harlem hospitality/restaurant workers affected by the shutdown
Delivery of hot meals from our local restaurants to the staff at Harlem hospitals
Restaurant workers can register each week for a grocery pick up location at:
https://hhfoodpantry.eventbrite.com.
(*Name and previous Harlem restaurant employer is required to register.)
It takes a Village. Your support makes a difference in the lives of your Harlem neighbors.

Hack City Comedy was recently featured on Time Out NY!
If having an Asian guy on a comedy show is unusual, then having two is just overkill. But that’s what comics Fumi Abe and Michael Nguyen are trying to do with their Hack City comedy show — overkill on the funnies. Join the two as they host one of NYC’s most diverse comedy show, featuring comics from MTV, Comedy Central, and your Facebook feed.
This monthly show has featured rising and established comics including Emma Willmann (Late Show with Stephen Colbert), Josh Johnson (Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon), Anthony Devito (Comedy Central Half Hour) and Langston Kerman (HBO’s Insecure) to name a few.
