FABSCRAP needs your help to save designer textiles from landfill! It’s easy to learn, fun to do, and a safe way to help out.
About this Event
FABSCRAP needs your help to save designer textiles from landfill! Volunteers will sort through fabric samples and swatches, separating fabric from paper headers and folding large, usable fabric to be saved for reuse.
We are committed to keeping our volunteers, community, and team safe:
Masks are required to enter the FABSCRAP warehouse and are mandatory on the Brooklyn Army Terminal premises
Volunteer stations are spaced at least 6 feet apart
Cleaning and sanitizing of volunteer stations and frequently touched surfaces will take place between all volunteer sessions
The FABSCRAP team will be wearing masks and gloves at all times
Gloves and hand sanitizer will be available
We ask that volunteers cancel their session and stay home if they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms including fever, cough, and/or gastro-intestinal issues (see additional info from the CDC). Additionally, please cancel your session and stay home if you have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or had direct contact with an individual diagnosed with or suspected to have COVID-19 in the past 14 days.

When you sign up, please consider making a donation to keep us operational as a sustainable resource – FABSCRAP is the only option available for the fashion industry to recycle and redistribute unused material, and the most accessible way for consumers to find saved-from-landfill fabric, trim, leather, and yarn.

What to expect:
Welcome: Intros and overview of FABSCRAP (10 minutes)
Training: Learn how FABSCRAP sorts fabric for recycling (15 minutes)
Sort: Sort through fabric samples and large pieces, pulling out usable fabrics for reuse and removing hardware and paper from fabric swatches for recycling (~2 hours)
Shop for fabric! (20 minutes)
***Sorting fabric requires the use of sharp scissors and moderate lifting (20-30 lbs). By registering for a session, you are confirming that you have read, understand, and agree to the volunteer waiver.***
Tips for a successful volunteer session:
Dress comfortably and wear comfortable shoes as most volunteers sort while standing; we can provide chairs if you prefer to sit
Bring your own bag to carry home any material you shop!
We play music, but feel free to bring headphones
Feel free to bring water or beverages with a cap/lid; there are also vending machines in the building
As the weather gets cooler, windows will only be open for ventilation depending on outside temperature
Please be sure to register for every session you plan to attend, and if you are unable to attend – especially if you are showing symptoms of COVID-19, have been diagnosed with COVID-19, or had direct contact with an individual diagnosed with or suspected to have COVID-19 in the past 14 days – cancel your ticket so that others may sign up for your space

THESE DIRECTIONS ARE IMPORTANT:
The FABSCRAP warehouse is located in Building B within the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT), which is accessible by foot, bike/scooter, car, subway, bus, and ferry. Free indoor and outdoor bike parking is available at BAT Building B entrances. Free, secure on-site parking is available for cars at the Pier 4/NYC Ferry parking lot.
How to locate FABSCRAP within BAT:
From 58th Street: Follow signs for the Pedestrian Entrance. Building B is the building closest to 2nd Avenue and will be the first building you see in front of you. When you enter the building, walk all the way to the back of the lobby and go through the glass doors to the atrium with the train tracks. Walk along the center pathway to the VERY END of the atrium, where you’ll go through another glass door. Use the elevator on your right to come up to the 5th floor. Go through the door on your left. ***This route is accessible with ramps and elevators.***
From 63rd Street: Enter the BAT complex using the walkway (a car entrance should be to your left and a parking lot to your right – this is NOT public parking). Note that this entrance has stairs. Building B is the building closest to 2nd Avenue and will be the first building you see to the right. When you enter the building, walk through to the back of the lobby. Do not enter the atrium with the train tracks. Make a left before the glass doors, and take the elevator to the 5th floor. Go through the door on your left. ***This route has stairs.***

About Not Another Second
LGBT+ seniors have demonstrated great resilience of humanity over hardship throughout the years, paving the way for a better and more accepting future for generations to come. These brave pioneers stood up and pushed back, refusing to be treated as social outcasts, criminals and sinners or seen as mentally ill. Their living legacy includes hard-won federal rights for LGBT+ members to legally marry, adopt, work and seek housing and health care without discrimination.
Not Another Second tells the stories of 12 LGBT+ seniors and explores the years they lost due to societal constraints. The project acknowledges the sacrifices and contributions of these seniors, celebrates their beauty and bravery and empowers them to share their words of wisdom with younger generations.
The seniors are presented through a series of large-scale portraits interspersed in the exhibit with video stories and a short documentary portraying their experiences as members of the LGBT+ community. Each moving portrait, captured by noted German photographer Karsten Thormaehlen (known for his award-winning series Happy at 100 focusing on centenarians from around the world), is accompanied by the number of years lost, or years when they could not live as their true self beyond their inner circle of trusted friends and family.
A collaboration between the nonprofit SAGE, Watermark Retirement Communities, and Brooklyn’s iconic new luxury senior community The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights, the project highlights important statistics and facts to illustrate the challenges which are still faced by approximately 3 million LGBT+ elders in the United States. This exhibition encourages viewers to join their pledge to continue to fight for what is right.

Is there a drink minimum?

If it’s cold, please wear gloves, a beanie or earmuffs, a winter coat, and multiple layers for your top and bottom. Dress like you’re going skiing.

Borscht is a rooftop comedy show as universally loved as the cold Russian beet soup that bears its name. Lineups change every week so you can go ahead and pencil this in your calendar every Saturday at 5:30pm for the foreseeable future.

Is there a drink minimum?
We don’t currently sell alcohol at the shows. We recommend pre-gaming the show at the bar All Night Skate or The Evergreen nearby.
What should I wear if it’s cold?
If it’s cold, please wear gloves, a beanie or earmuffs, a winter coat, and multiple layers for your top and bottom. Dress like you’re going skiing.
What are my transportation options for getting to the event?
J TRAIN to Chauncey St (1 min walk)
C TRAIN to Rockaway Ave (10 min walk)
A TRAIN to Broadway Junction (13 min walk)
L TRAIN to Wilson Ave (10 minute walk)
Will there be social distancing seating?
Yes, we are limiting the amount of tickets sold. And there is more than enough space to be 6 feet apart from guests. Masks are also required the whole time.

Now is the perfect time to work on some career and people skills while we are still getting through these quarantine times at home.
Everybody is a public speaker. Maybe you’re delivering a corporate presentation or interviewing for a new job. Maybe you’re a teacher lecturing students or a citizen addressing a neighborhood association. Maybe you’re arguing a case before a courtroom or persuading book club members about the merits of your latest read.
Whatever the situation, being able to speak in public is essential to success. You can have the most logical argument possible, but in order to truly teach, inform, persuade, or defend, you need to present your ideas with conviction and confidence.
Yet this is often easier said than done. Many of us have a deep fear of public speaking. Or we think it’s just an intuitive talent that can’t be learned. All it takes is confidence, practice, and the knowledge of time-tested techniques and strategies used by history’s greatest public speakers—all of which you’ll find in this online workshop for our group.
Also, as a follow up to this workshop, once we get back to ‘normal’ offline events, we will look to have some in-person evens where we can mingle and even give some presentations.
