Ever wonder why men’s clothes have so many pockets and women’s so few? Why are women so quick to jump for joy when their dress has pockets? It’s a subject that ignites immediate passion, as women have been deprived of pockets for centuries, while their well-pocketed male counterparts seem unconscious of their built-in good fortune. Dr. Hannah Carlson, author of Pockets: An Intimate History of How We Keep Things Close, will discuss the surprising and riveting 500-year-old history of those subtle slits by our side. She will reveal how we tuck gender politics, security, sexuality, and privilege inside our pockets—and why it matters. Hannah Carlson teaches dress history and material culture at the Rhode Island School of Design. She has contributed articles to Commonplace: The Journal of Early American Life, Dress, and MacGuffin: The Life of Things. Stylish pocket fashion is highly encouraged! Books will be available for purchase.
Entry to this event is not guaranteed with Eventbrite reservation. Please arrive no more than 15-20 minutes before the event start time. Seating is first-come, first-served.
Please cancel your reservation if you are unable to attend.

WHAT IS A ONE-DAY CHOIR?
Gaia Music Collective’s One-Day Choir series is an opportunity to sing in a choir for one day only. A celebration of song and the connective power of singing in harmony. An opportunity to build community, make some new friends, and raise our powerfully diverse voices as one.
No auditions. No commitment. No need for perfection.
Just the joy of creating something bigger than ourselves with a room full of beautiful humans!
For each choir, we pick a single piece of music to rehearse and sing our hearts out to. In our time together, we’ll:
Play some fun singing games, warmups, & connection games
Work through the piece section by section
Break down the lyrics & emotions at play in the song
Shape some key musical moments
& Record some casual rehearsal videos of the piece to share with the greater Gaia community
Whether you’re a vocal ensemble veteran or have never sung in a group before, you are welcome here – all experience levels are valued in Gaia Music Collective!
OUR SONG THIS TIME AROUND
Shine bright like a diamond. Need we say more? It is about time we honor this icon in pop music, the one and only…Rihanna. A song that took the world by storm in 2012 as an anthem of love and embracing happiness, Diamonds is a classic that stands the test of time.
Arranged and facilitated by Gaia’s own, Kenter Davies, our rendition will dive into the boldness of self-love and anthemic nature of the song. As always, it will walk the line between complexity and simplicity; while perhaps exploring a few other songs by Rihanna along the way! Music has the power to build community, help us heal, and help us find collective strength. Our goal is to find that transformative magic through singing “Diamonds” together.
LEARNING THE MUSIC
Sheet music and vocal recordings of each part will be available as learning resources before the event, and our collective goal is to practice the parts ahead of time so that we might come into the gathering with ! This way we can spend our time together really diving into the richness of music-making, rather than trying to teach the parts one by one. We don’t need to know our parts by heart by any means (and you defffinitely don’t have to memorize it), but the stronger we are in our parts coming in, the more we’ll be able to really dig into the fun stuff!
(If this style of learning isn’t your cup of tea, we have other group singing events where you don’t need to prepare at all! Check out our CircleSinging gatherings and House Shows.)
LED & FACILITATED BY:
Kenter Davies (he/him) is a music educator, vocal arranger and singer/songwriter who lives in Brooklyn, NY. He is currently pursuing an MA in music education at Hunter College, which he plans to use to create joyous, accessible, and supportive spaces for people of all ages to engage with music and create freely. He believes that music is within every person, and that the world needs more opportunities for casual music-making free of judgment and perfectionism. Kenter is thrilled to be facilitating one-night choir events for Gaia over the summer, and cannot wait to see this community grow and change the lives of those within it, just as it has changed his life.

GAIA MUSIC COLLECTIVE MISSION
Gaia Music Collective is a creative community based in Brooklyn, NYC. This project was born out of a desire to create more spaces for people to find expression, connection, growth, & release through collaborative music-making – a place where folks feel safe to make music free of judgment or expectation, and to make new friends as our weird, beautiful, authentic selves.
All are welcome in this community, regardless of age, race, gender, class, religion, sexual orientation, ability, national origin, language, or musical ability. All we ask is that you bring an open mind, a desire to connect, and a willingness to leave judgment of self & others at the door.
Here at Gaia, we believe that music-making – and making that music in community & collaboration with other people – is a fundamental human need, and this project seeks to build space for that in a day and age when it is so often hard to find.
Gaia seeks to break down the divisions between performer & audience and craft experiences where we are ALL part of the music-making, while also offering a network & platform for local artists & creatives to connect with other artists, activate their creativity through collaboration, and engage their work with other musical minds.
In short – we’re here to sing, to play, to connect, to grow, and to have a good time!

Half of all 7,000-plus human languages may disappear over the next century and—because many have never been recorded—when they’re gone, it will be forever. Ross Perlin, a linguist and co-director of the Manhattan-based non-profit Endangered Language Alliance, is racing against time to map little-known languages across the most linguistically diverse city in history: contemporary New York. In Language City, Perlin recounts the unique history of immigration that shaped the city, and follows six remarkable yet ordinary speakers of endangered languages deep into their communities to learn how they are maintaining and reviving their languages against overwhelming odds. Perlin also dives deep into their languages, taking us on a fascinating tour of unusual grammars, rare sounds, and powerful cultural histories from all around the world.
Seke is spoken by 700 people from five ancestral villages in Nepal, a hundred of whom have lived in a single Brooklyn apartment building. N’ko is a radical new West African writing system now going global in Harlem and the Bronx. After centuries of colonization and displacement, Lenape, the city’s original Indigenous language and the source of the name Manhattan (“the place where we get bows”), has just one fluent native speaker, bolstered by a small band of revivalists. Also profiled in the book are speakers of the Indigenous Mexican language Nahuatl, the Central Asian minority language Wakhi, and the former lingua franca of the Lower East Side, Yiddish.
A century after the anti-immigration Johnson-Reed Act closed America’s doors for decades and on the 400th anniversary of New York’s colonial founding, Perlin raises the alarm about growing political threats and the onslaught of “killer languages” like English and Spanish. Both remarkable social history and testament to the importance of linguistic diversity, Language City is a joyful and illuminating exploration of a city and the world that made it.
Founded in 2010, the Endangered Language Alliance (ELA) is a non-profit dedicated to documenting Indigenous, minority, and endangered languages, supporting linguistic diversity in New York City and beyond.
Ross Perlin is a linguist, writer, and translator. He has written for the New York Times, The Guardian, Harper’s, and n+1, and the Endangered Language Alliance has been covered by the New York Times, the New Yorker, BBC, NPR, and many others. He is also the author of Intern Nation: How to Learn Nothing and Earn Little in the Brave New Economy. Perlin is a native New Yorker.

Join Julia Gorton in a talk and slideshow exploring the fashion and aesthetics of No Wave, the hyper-local music scene of the late 70s in downtown New York City. The presentation will feature beautiful visions of downtown Manhattan in the moments before AIDS, crack, Disney, and condos changed everything forever. She will focus on subjects including musicians and friends Debbie Harry, Patti Smith, Tom Verlaine, David Byrne, Lydia Lunch, Iggy Pop, James Chance, Richard Hell, Anya Phillips, and many others. Her high-contrast photos combine with graphic patterns, DIY lettering, and hand-collaged elements to capture a fleeting time with a unique style. She continues to explore/exploit her archive to develop new work – collages, t-shirts, and zines.
