Half of all 7,000-plus human languages may disappear over the next century and—because many have never been recorded—when they’re gone, it will be forever. Ross Perlin, a linguist and co-director of the Manhattan-based non-profit Endangered Language Alliance, is racing against time to map little-known languages across the most linguistically diverse city in history: contemporary New York. In Language City, Perlin recounts the unique history of immigration that shaped the city, and follows six remarkable yet ordinary speakers of endangered languages deep into their communities to learn how they are maintaining and reviving their languages against overwhelming odds. Perlin also dives deep into their languages, taking us on a fascinating tour of unusual grammars, rare sounds, and powerful cultural histories from all around the world.

Seke is spoken by 700 people from five ancestral villages in Nepal, a hundred of whom have lived in a single Brooklyn apartment building. N’ko is a radical new West African writing system now going global in Harlem and the Bronx. After centuries of colonization and displacement, Lenape, the city’s original Indigenous language and the source of the name Manhattan (“the place where we get bows”), has just one fluent native speaker, bolstered by a small band of revivalists. Also profiled in the book are speakers of the Indigenous Mexican language Nahuatl, the Central Asian minority language Wakhi, and the former lingua franca of the Lower East Side, Yiddish.

A century after the anti-immigration Johnson-Reed Act closed America’s doors for decades and on the 400th anniversary of New York’s colonial founding, Perlin raises the alarm about growing political threats and the onslaught of “killer languages” like English and Spanish. Both remarkable social history and testament to the importance of linguistic diversity, Language City is a joyful and illuminating exploration of a city and the world that made it.

Founded in 2010, the Endangered Language Alliance (ELA) is a non-profit dedicated to documenting Indigenous, minority, and endangered languages, supporting linguistic diversity in New York City and beyond.

Ross Perlin is a linguist, writer, and translator. He has written for the New York Times, The Guardian, Harper’s, and n+1, and the Endangered Language Alliance has been covered by the New York Times, the New Yorker, BBC, NPR, and many others. He is also the author of Intern Nation: How to Learn Nothing and Earn Little in the Brave New Economy. Perlin is a native New Yorker.

Thomas Dyja is the author of New York, New York, New York: Four Decades of Success, Excess, and Transformation and The Third Coast: When Chicago Built the American Dream, both New York Times Notable Books.

Meet HumaVibe’s latest device, Billie Bowtie. Programmed to be the perfect performer, Billie must ride the line between palatable and personal – gay, but not too gay! As he navigates his sentience amidst growing pressure from the Moderator, Billie glitches through standup, characters, song, dance, and storytelling.

A laugh-out-loud comedy with a meta twist, Palatable Gay Robot is equal parts playful and thought-provoking. Broadway actor and comedian, Stephen Brower, will leave you feeling joyful, inspired, and a bit more sentient.

This year’s Summit will focus specifically on applications of AI in healthcare. From ethical considerations to clinical applications, HealthNext 2024 will explore the real issues at stake and give innovators and thought leaders the knowledge, connections, and insight to advance a more responsible, effective, and authentic future for health AI.

Tickets:

Regular Two-Day Pass: $750

Early Bird Two-Day Pass: $500 (limited time only)

What to expect at the 2024 HealthNext Summit:

An environment that encourages forward-thinking ideas and breakthroughs in health tech

The central themes of this year’s Summit include:

Real People • The Summit will center the perspectives and experiences of real people in our discussions about how AI can solve healthcare challenges.

Real Integrity • Innovation should not come at the expense of integrity; attendees at the Summit will reach beyond medicine and tech to consider ethical, legal, and political implications of AI in healthcare.

Real Applications • AI and technology must have real applications in healthcare to have an impact; Cornell Tech collaborates with Weill Cornell Medicine to ensure the Summit includes important clinical perspectives on translating ideas into practice.

Real Intersections • The Summit will position healthcare challenges at the real intersection of social and environment factors to prioritize an understanding of equitable, whole person care.

More details will be revealed as the Summit approaches. For more information and to sign up for our newsletter, visit our website: https://www.healthnextsummit.com/

“Richman is one of America’s most unique and dynamic songwriters…” – Nashville Scene “Richman didn’t need much else besides a beat to work his magic.” – New York Daily News

“Buy tickets early. Buy tickets often. This is just good general life advice, but even more so when you’re talking about Jonathan Richman. Don’t get denied at the door, don’t leave things up to chance: You will regret it.” – Nashville Scene

“Rhymes worthy of Ogden Nash.” – The New York Times

“Richman has spent decades removing barriers between himself and his audience, cultivating an intimacy that is almost extinct in modern music.”- Nashville Scene

“The music we’re doing now works well in quiet places like theaters and performing art centers. We still don’t use a program or a set list so we don’t know what we’ll do until we do it. Please do not expect old songs. Many singers my age do a retrospective; this show is not like that. It’s mostly stuff made up in the last 3 and 4 years. Some of the songs presented might be in different languages; this is not to be esoteric or clever, it’s because the different languages help me express different feelings sometimes. One last thing, my idea of a good show has nothing to do with applause. It’s about if all the songs I sang that night were ones that I felt.” – Jonathan
