About this event
Event lasts 2 hours
In this month’s Dance Historian Is In, Nancy Dalva explores Gus Solomons Jr.’s life in dance with photos and video from the Jerome Robbins Dance Division archive. Solomons began his training in modern dance and ballet while studying architecture at MIT. Upon graduating he moved to New York City to dance, including an early stint with Martha Graham’s company, which he left to dance for Merce Cunningham from 1965 to 1968. Cunningham left a lasting influence on Solomons’ life-long choreography practice, which like Cunningham’s, was technology forward. The founder of The Solomons Company/Dance, as well as the fabulous collective of later career superstars called PARADIGM, Solomons also danced in the companies of Pearl Lang, Donald McKayle, Joyce Trisler, and Paul Sanasardo, he wrote highly perceptive dance criticism, taught generations of students at New York University, and served as a mentor to many.

Join Merce Cunningham Trust Scholar-in-Residence Nancy Dalva as she explains why, as she says, “Everyone loved Gus.”

For more than 10 years, The Dance Historian Is In at the Library for the Performing Arts has highlighted a diverse range of dancers and choreographers across history. This series began when archivist and historian David Vaughan started volunteering at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division. Vaughan began a monthly program showing his favorite dance films from the Division’s extensive collection, through which he unearthed many treasures, and helped acquire even more. Vaughan continued the series until the end of his life. Today, we honor his memory and work by inviting dance historians from all over the world each month to carry on the tradition of highlighting dance history through the Dance Division’s moving image collection.

This event will take place online via Zoom as well as in person at The Library for the Performing Arts.

*A streaming link will be emailed to everyone on the morning of the event for those wishing to attend virtually.

Prince Kung’s Palace Museum 北京恭王府博物馆

Nestled in the heart of Beijing, Prince Kung’s Palace Museum stands as a testament to China’s rich cultural heritage. Recognized as a nationally protected cultural relic, a first-class museum, and a prestigious 5A-level tourist destination, it is one of the most exquisite and well-preserved princely residences of the Qing Dynasty open to the public.

The mansion’s architecture, adorned with intricate color paintings, masterful brick carvings, and meticulously designed gardens, is imbued with the essence of “Fu” (blessing) culture. This cultural symbolism reflects the Chinese people’s timeless aspirations for happiness, prosperity, and a better life. Revered as the “Garden of Ten Thousand Blessings,” the Prince Kung’s Palace offers visitors an unparalleled journey into the elegance and spirit of China’s imperial past.

Interactive Workshops and Experiential Stations

Shadow Puppetry: The Art of Light and Silhouette 皮影戏

Shadow puppetry, also known as “Lantern Shadow Play,” is a traditional art form that uses intricately carved silhouettes of characters, made from animal hide or cardboard. Illuminated by a beam of light, these figures come to life through delicate manipulation and vivid performances, weaving captivating stories for the audience. Visitors are invited to partake in the experience by painting and assembling their own shadow puppets, adding a personal touch to this enchanting craft.

Herbal Sachets: The Art of Scents and Blessings 本草香囊

Sachets, also known as fragrant pouches or perfume bags, are exquisite creations adorned with intricate patterns on the outside and filled with a blend of traditional Chinese herbs and aromatic spices. Worn as an accessory or hung within living spaces, sachets not only serve as decorative items but also offer refreshing scents that calm the mind. Additionally, they are believed to ward off insects, dispel evil spirits, and bring protection and peace.

Visitors are invited to craft their own personalized sachets on-site, creating a unique blend of fragrance and tradition to take home.

Facial Makeup Painting: A Symbol of Traditional Chinese Opera 脸谱绘制

A quintessential element of traditional Chinese opera, facial makeup is characterized by bold colors and dramatic lines that accentuate a character’s features. Each unique combination of patterns and hues conveys the personality, emotions, and social identity of the character.

We will showcase an array of iconic facial makeup examples, spanning Peking Opera, Sichuan Opera, and other regional theatrical traditions. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a guided workshop, where an instructor will lead them in creating their very own facial mask masterpiece.

Furniture Joinery: Mortise and Tenon: 榫卯结构

The mortise-and-tenon joint is a hallmark of ancient Chinese wooden architecture, furniture, and tools. This ingenious structural technique leverages the natural properties of wood, creating stable connections between components through interlocking concave and convex shapes—entirely without the use of nails. It is a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship and wisdom of ancient artisans.

This event draws inspiration from the Prince Kung’s Palace collection of furniture, showcasing classic mortise-and-tenon structures through detailed models. Visitors will witness the elegance of these techniques up close and participate in hands-on activities, dismantling and assembling furniture components. Those who complete the assembly within the allotted time will be rewarded with special prizes, making for a uniquely engaging and educational experience.

Chinese Knotting: An Ancient Craft of Blessings and Wishes 结绳技艺

Knot weaving is an ancient art form, where each intricately tied knot seems to entwine the blessings of time with the hopes for a prosperous new year. Every loop and weave locks in joy, harmony, and the longing for health and happiness, allowing good fortune to flow through the strands. It symbolizes the beginning of a beautiful chapter filled with family unity and success in all endeavors.

Under the guidance of an instructor, participants can create their own woven knots, crafting tangible expressions of hope and blessings.

Lacquer Fans: A Fusion of Art and Craftsmanship 漆扇

Lacquer fans are exquisite creations that combine the timeless artistry of lacquerware with the elegance of fan design. Crafted through a meticulous process, lacquer is delicately dropped onto the water’s surface, where patterns emerge through techniques such as dotting, flicking, bouncing, and drawing. Once the fan is immersed in the water, the vibrant colors and intricate patterns transfer onto it, capturing the dynamic ripples and vivid veins of the water’s motion.

Adding to their allure, visitors can actively engage in the creation of lacquer fans, transforming the process into an immersive and enchanting artistic experience.

Woodblock Printing: The Art of Capturing Carved Masterpieces “福”字拓印

Woodblock Printing is a traditional art form that replicates the intricate details of carved or engraved surfaces. The process begins with carving desired patterns onto a wooden block, often favoring abstract decorative designs for striking visual effects. Ink or paint is then applied to the block, and paper is pressed over it to create a beautiful impression.

This event combines the “Fu” motif from the Prince Kung’s Palace Museum collection with the techniques of traditional Chinese woodblock New Year prints. Participants will use brushes to apply pigment and create their own rubbings, enjoying both the artistry of the process and the joy of taking home a one-of-a-kind keepsake.

Paper Cutting: The Art of Crafting Good Fortune 剪纸

Paper cutting is a cherished Chinese folk art that involves intricately slicing paper to create beautiful patterns, each symbolizing auspiciousness and happiness. For this event, a master of intangible cultural heritage has crafted exclusive designs, and under the guidance of a skilled instructor, visitors will create their own symbols of good fortune.

2025 Winter Lecture

The Alhambra—A Moorish Paradise: Explore a Magical and Ethereal World

Our 2025 Winter Lecture features Untermyer Gardens Conservancy President, Stephen F. Byrns, who will delve into the exquisite architecture and ethereal gardens of the Alhambra.

The Alhambra in Spain is the most significant preserved Moorish palace in Europe—older than the surviving paradise gardens of Iran, India, and Pakistan, dating to the 14th century. Built on a fortified hill overlooking Granada, which was then an Islamic kingdom, its architecture is richly ornamented like a faceted jewel, while water flows throughout its intricately linked courtyard gardens. The nearby Generalife was the sultans’ summer palace with extensive gardens which seem a world away from the towering Alhambra.

The lecture will take place at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, 921 Madison Avenue, NYC, with a reception following the lecture.

A recording of the lecture will be available starting February 6, tickets sold separately.
