Come hear two crucial novelists who’re narrating the colonial and postcolonial nation. Chomp on free Burmese food from our catering partner, Burma Noodle Bar. We’re celebrating the new novel by author-actress Charmaine Craig: the semi-autobiographical epic Miss Burma. Pulitzer Finalist Laila Lalami calls the book “a sweeping novel of Burma and its complicated history, told from the perspective of people whose voices have been systematically erased from the official record.” Charmaine will talk with Maaza Mengiste, whose novel Beneath the Lion’s Gaze tells the last days of Ethiopian ruler Haile Selassie and the 1970s Ethiopian Civil War. If you loved Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko or Chaitali Sen’s The Pathless Sky, don’t miss this thrilling discussion of late colonial violence, mass revolt, postcolonial malaise, and the personal stories that comprise history from below. This event is co-sponsored by Columbia Center for International History and NYSEAN (New York South East Asian Network)!

Charmaine Craig’s Miss Burma (Grove Atlantic 2017) tells the story of Myanmar from British colonial rule to the assassination of Aung San and the student protests of 1962. The focal point are two characters loosely based on Craig’s grandparents: Benny and Khin, a member of the persecuted Karen minority, who both go into hiding during the Japanese occupation during World War II―a journey that will have historical ramifications. The novel follows Aung San’s ascension and assassination and the country’s subsequent civil war, a brutal conflict through which the state viciously targeted the Karen minority. Miss Burma also follows Benny and Khin’s eldest child, Louisa, who becomes the country’s first beauty queen but must reckon with her family’s past, the West’s ongoing covert dealings in her country, and her own loyalty to the Karen cause. A rich, subtextually layered novel that’s stylistically reminiscent of Sara Suleri’s Meatless Days and John Berger’s G, Miss Burma is―in the words of Aminatta Forna―a book that explores “how we are all actors in our histories and the histories of our nations.” A professor at UC Riverside, Charmaine Craig wrote the novel The Good Men (Riverhead), a national bestseller translated into six languages. She previously worked as an actor in film and television.
Addis Ababa-born Maaza Mengiste’s debut novel Beneath the Lion’s Gaze (Norton 2011) narrates the Ethiopian civil war through dual characters: Emperor Haile Selassie, depicted in his last days before revolution, and Hailu, a respected doctor who must protect his family from violence and is also asked by the regime to treat a tortured political prisoner. Named one of the 10 best contemporary African books by The Guardian, the novel led the New York Times to state that “Mengiste joins a group of other young Africans writing in English whose subject is the continent’s postcolonial civil wars. They are unafraid of depicting the vicious violence Frantz Fanon’s ‘wretched of the earth’ are capable of and showing how Fanon’s colonially oppressed grew into master oppressors themselves.” A contributor to the New Yorker and Granta and named a new literary idol by New York magazine, Mengiste served as a writer for the social-activist documentary film GIRL RISING, which features the voices of actors such as Meryl Streep, Liam Neeson, and Cate Blanchett.

Rhizome is located at 6950 Maple St NW DC, two blocks from the Takoma metro station (red line).

This Sunday’s program will be devoted to some of the varied cultural traditions coming out of the large Ethiopian-American population in the DC area.
Gezachew Teklemariam is an accomplished and highly regarded vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. He performs traditional Ethiopian music on masinko and krar, among other instruments. He will be joined by a dancer.
Tsedaye Makonnen is an Ethiopian-American interdisciplinary artist, a mother and a former doula. Recurring themes present in her work are identity, colorism, womanhood, ritual and kinship. She’s particularly drawn to conveying the African Diaspora’s creative responses to assimilating, destroying and recreating the Self within new and/or hostile territories, whether that happens to be a new country or a hospital room. As of late, she has been connecting the forced migrations taking place in DC and abroad through performance art and installations.
Tsedaye has performed in D.C. at the Corcoran Gallery, Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. She’s a part of NY’s performance art scene and has shown at Five Myles Gallery, El Museo del Barrio, Grace Exhibition Space, Panoply Performance Lab, ABCNoRio, and more. She has an upcoming performance at Pratt Film Institute, a part of Myrtle Avenue’s Black Art Story. She is also involved in a touring performance art collective titled BlackGirlLit. A screening of#BlackGirlLit: Between Literature, Performance & Memory will take place at MoCADA during 3DotZine’s fest. She currently has two collaborative video performances up at MOAD in San Francisco a part of Helina Metafaria’s solo exhibition Home//Free. And another video performance installation at Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery titled Holy Water: Bleach Bloodbath series, a part of the Us Vs. Them group exhibition.
During her Artist-In-Residence at 39th Street Gallery in Brentwood, Md, Tsedaye created a participatory performance series that took place in DC for What’s Going On Shaw. She presented a series of performance art incorporating traditions from her Ethiopian-American background within the current microcultures of Shaw, where she was born. In blending the rituals of Ethiopian coffee ceremonies with the culture of today’s grab & go coffee, Tsedaye and a group of participants from the community performed a coffee ceremony with a twist that nods to the changing landscape of Shaw. She activated the space in front of local Shaw businesses and streets; including well-known Zenebach Restaurant and Creative Time’s DC Summit. As well as engaged in bridging the gap between the microcultures by helping form new bonds and tighten existing ones. This piece of work was titled ‘Common Ground’ in which the children of Shaw Community Center, where she teaches visual art and social practice, assisted her in making 100 ceramic coffee cups to use during the performance. In this piece, she wanted to reflect the history, leaders and present day situation of this historical district. Here is some press on the ‘Common Ground’ piece: http://thekojonnamdishow.org/2016/10/05/ethiopian-coffee-ceremony-sparked-conversation-changes-shaw

The Ethiopian Community Devevelopment Council’s Annual National Conference is a unique event dedicated to refugee and immigrant issues in the United States. Attendees will interact with policymakers, academics, service providers, community leaders, and former refugees, exchanging knowledge and sharing insights. The conference is part of ECDC’s efforts to enhance public awareness of and support for refugee and immigrant needs, to strengthen resettlement programs and services, and to promote cultural and socio-economic initiatives that help newcomers integrate into their communities. ECDC’s 23rd annual national conference will take place May 31 – June 2, 2017, at the Holiday Inn Arlington at Ballston, in Arlington, Virginia.
ECDC’s conference comes at a crucial time for refugees, both abroad and domestically. The world refugee crisis continues to be one of the defining issues of our time with more people displaced by war and persecution than ever before. A recent United Nations report found that a record 65.3 million people were internally displaced persons, refugees, or asylum seekers at the end of 2015, almost 6 million more than in 2014. While the refugee crisis can be expected to continue unabated, domestic politics in Europe and the United States have made responding to this challenge more difficult than ever. In these unprecedented times, ECDC’s conference will focus on how to respond to the uncertainties facing the future of resettlement and the challenges facing refugee and immigrant communities. Attendees will leave the conference empowered to become better advocates for refugees at the local and national levels.

The course aims at providing training on agricultural policy with a view to strengthening and/or renewing the knowledge and capacity of African policy makers, including senior managers, negotiators, advisors, planners and analysts, to meet the core challenges of growing the agricultural sector as a central engine of national economic development and social policy. In doing so, the course will expose participants not only to the current state of knowledge and the comparative lessons which are available to Africa, but also some of the best practices that serve as pertinent examples of how an integrated and comprehensive agricultural policy regime has been used to promote economic transformation and social well-being.
The course will serve the policy concerns which most African governments share of, among other things, improving agricultural output and productivity, nurturing the linkages between agriculture and other economic sectors, increasing national food security, combating poverty, expanding employment, promoting environmental sustainability, and enhancing sustainable rural livelihoods, including gender equality. These are concerns that have also been embraced by the African Union, the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and NEPAD.

Baltimore Attractions
Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland and an important seaport on the wide estuary of the Patapsco River. With several famous universities, in particular the Johns Hopkins University, museums and a renowned symphony orchestra, Baltimore is a major east coast cultural center. It was the birthplace of Edgar Allan Poe.
History
The settlement of Baltimore was established in 1729 and named after the Barons Baltimore, founders of the colony of Maryland. Commerce and shipping brought it prosperity, and in 1796 it was granted its municipal charter. Its place in American history was won in 1814, when British forces bombarded Fort Henry for 25 hours without bringing about its surrender. The sight of the American flag still flying over the fort on the morning after the bombardment inspired Francis Scott Key’s poem “The Star Spangled Banner”, which became the text of the national anthem. The old town center and the inner harbor area have been thoroughly renovated.
1. The Walters Art Museum, located in the Mount Vernons Cultural District, is a cultural institution of international renown. It is one of only a few museums worldwide to present a comprehensive history of art from the third millennium B.C. to the early 20th century. Among its thousands of treasures are a fine collection of ivories, jewelry, enamels and bronzes, and a large reserve of illuminated manuscripts and rare books. The Walters’ Egyptian, Greek and Roman, Byzantine, Ethiopian and western medieval art collections are extensive, as are the museum’s holdings of Renaissance and Asian art. Every major trend in French painting during the 19th century is represented by one or more works in the collection.
Address: 600 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201-5185, United States

2. The American Visionary Art Museum displays the work of self-taught artists in six galleries. The main building’s architecture is also an artistic creation, winning many international and national awards for its design and beauty. The sculpture barn, formerly the Four Roses whiskey warehouse, houses towering exhibits.
Address: 800 Key Highway, Baltimore, MD 21230-3940, United States

3. Just 3 miles southeast of the city centre via Key Highway and Fort Avenue is Fort McHenry, built between 1798 and 1803 to command the harbor entrance. In 1814 it withstood a 24 hour bombardment by a British warship and thus saved Baltimore from occupation. In the fort’s Visitor Center are displays and a film on the history of the fort, referring to the origins of the national anthem, the ‘The Star Spangled Banner’. However, the original of the famous flag now hangs in the Museum of American History in Washington, DC.

4. The Baltimore Museum of Art is the largest art museum in Maryland with art from around the world, covering a broad spectrum of periods and styles. The permanent collection includes the world’s largest collection of works by Matisse. Other notable artists represented include Picasso, Cezanne, van Gogh, And Warhol, and many others

Today, behind the brick facades of this beautifully restored quarter are mainly restaurants, cafes, and shops
6. Located on Pier 3 and 4, the National Aquarium in Baltimore is a joint effort with another location in Washington, DC. The aquarium in Baltimore features marine life in various exhibits, from sharks and dolphins, to hundreds of exotic species found in the Atlantic Coral Reef Exhibit. Of particular note is the five-storey Tropical Rain Forest, with all kinds of birds, frogs, and a variety of larger mammals, such as sloths and monkeys.
