After a triumphant and sold out residency in San Francisco this past March, consummate showman and legendary musician PETER MURPHY has announced a very special and intimate residency this August at New York City’s LE POISSON ROUGE (158 Bleecker St, New York, NY 10012). Mirroring his West Coast shows, these performances will kick off on August 2nd, running through his solo albums in their entirety beginning with 1986’s Should The World Fail to Fall Apart and ending with a greatest hits show of solo material and tributes to Bauhaus and David Bowie.
After an extensive and exhaustive 93 shows worldwide of his “The Ruby Tour: 40 Years of Bauhaus” that concluded this Spring as well as the aforementioned San Francisco residency, Peter returned home to his home in Istanbul to refresh his energy before returning to the stage in NYC.
First emerging from the British punk and rock underground in the late 70s, Murphy (along with bandmates Daniel Ash, David J and Kevin Haskins) fronted the groundbreaking iconic rock band Bauhaus which spawned four iconoclastic and ultra-seminal albums as well as keystone singles “She’s In Parties”, “Silent Hedges”, and, of course, “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” before disbanding in 1983. Murphy launched a successful solo career that has yielded ten solo albums so far, including his latest LION, released in 2014.
Featuring:
Mark Gemini Thwaite – Guitar
Marc Slutsky – Drums

Politics and Prose and Sixth & I welcome Isabel Allende for a discussion of her new book, A LONG PETAL OF THE SEA.
About this Event
From the New York Times bestselling author Isabel Allende, this epic novel spanning decades and crossing continents follows two young people as they flee the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War in search of a place to call home. In the late 1930s, civil war grips Spain. When General Franco and his Fascists succeed in overthrowing the government, hundreds of thousands are forced to flee in a treacherous journey over the mountains to the French border. Among them is Roser, a pregnant young widow, who finds her life intertwined with that of Victor Dalmau, an army doctor and the brother of her deceased love. In order to survive, the two must unite in a marriage neither of them desires.
A masterful work of historical fiction about hope, exile, and belonging, A Long Petal of the Sea shows Isabel Allende at the height of her powers.

It’s time to rise above
About this Event
It was fun for a while. This plethora of data. Each feed promising points of alpha. The dopamine fix from finding a new source, only to be followed by the inevitable letdown from lacklustre performance of the data.
We’re not kids in a candy store anymore. There is an inedible feast of supply out there and not enough time or bodies to evaluate it all. We must get better, smarter, and faster at finding, assessing and implementing alternative data.

Due to a medical emergency, this show has been postponed to January 24, 2020. Tickets purchased for the originally scheduled show on August 19, 2019 will be honored on this new date.**

ONE NIGHT ONLY! Sensitive and in Love WORLD PREMIERE followed by special Q&A as Hollywood puts the spotlight on high sensitivity!
About this Event
Join us on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at the prestigious Directors Guild of America (DGA)Theater in the heart of New York City as we roll out the red carpet for the world premiere of Sensitive and in Love, a benefit for the Foundation for the Study of Highly Sensitive Persons.
Sensitive and in Love follows in the footsteps of the original documentary Sensitive-The Untold Story featuring Alanis Morissette (2015).
Over 1.4 billion people on this planet are highly sensitive and they are changing the way we view the world. Several years in the making, Sensitive and in Love captures another side of a highly sensitive person and is a film not to be missed!
What is high sensitivity? In not only our species, but over a hundred others, a minority of individuals come with an inborn survival strategy of greater sensitivity to what is going on around them. The foundation of the trait, found in 20%, is DOES: Depth of processing, being easily overstimulated, emotional responsiveness, including intense empathy, and sensitivity to the subtleties. Often misunderstood, highly sensitive people can be called “too sensitive”, “too shy”, “too high maintenance”. The trait was identified by Dr. Elaine Aron in 1991. Since then, her international bestseller The Highly Sensitive Person has been translated into 23 languages.
Your tickets are tax deductible (US only). All proceeds will go to the Foundation for the Study of Highly Sensitive Persons (501c3) to continue education and research on the trait of high sensitivity.
Doors open at 6PM EST, followed by a VIP RECEPTION (included in Sensitive Community, Sensitive Supporter, Friend/Member/Patron of the Foundation and Executive Producer ticket levels)
SHOWTIME is at 7PM EST followed by the Q&A with bestselling author -psychologist DR. ELAINE ARON (THE HIGHLY SENSITIVE PERSON); one of the world’s leading scientists of love and relationships, author of 36 QUESTIONS – DR. ARTHUR ARON; SENSITIVE AND IN LOVE’s Emmy award-winning director WILL HARPER; producer DIANA SINELNIKOVA; and members of the cast – JOSE ROSETE and BIANCA ROGOFF.
Dress code: business casual
SYNOPSIS:
What do you do when you feel you are born with an unbearable flaw, and you don’t know yet that you share it with 1.4 billion people? Rob and Jessica grew up feeling just that. Inspired by the international bestseller The Highly Sensitive Person and global media sensation 36 Questions that lead to love, SENSITIVE AND IN LOVE tells their story. Besides their sensitivity, the brother and sister share a traumatic childhood. Jessica is an accomplished writer in San Francisco, however every one of her romantic relationships has crashed and burned. Rob, a successful music producer in Manila, has a seemingly happy marriage, but it is headed for a cliff. Robbie insists Jessica comes to the Philippines for a much-needed break. While there, a single mistake opens Jessica to the world and a terrifying moment for Robbie opens him to a real family connection.

Join us at Birdland for the Hot Sardines!
About this Event
Fueled by the belief that classic jazz feeds the heart and soul, THE HOT SARDINES are on a mission to make old sounds new again and prove that joyful music can bring people together in a disconnected world.
In the last two years, the Hot Sardines have been featured at the Newport Jazz Festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival, have sold out NYC venues from Joe’s Pub to Bowery Ballroom and more than 150 tour dates from Chicago to London, and have released two albums on Universal Music Classics to critical raves and a No. 1 slot on the iTunes Jazz chart in the U.S. and internationally.
Quality is timeless. Just ask The Hot Sardines.
In the talented hands of the New York-based ensemble, music first made famous decades ago comes alive through their brassy horn arrangements, rollicking piano melodies, and vocals from a chanteuse who transports listeners to a different era with the mere lilt of her voice. On French Fries & Champagne, The Hot Sardines’ new album for Universal Music Classics, the jazz collective broadens its already impressive palette, combining covers and originals as they effortlessly channel New York speakeasies, Parisian cabarets and New Orleans jazz halls.
Bandleader Evan Palazzo and lead singer Elizabeth Bougerol met in 2007 after they both answered a Craigslist ad about a jazz jam session above a Manhattan noodle shop. The unlikely pair — she was a London School of Economics-educated travel writer who grew up in France, Canada and the Ivory Coast, he was a New York City born and raised actor who studied theater at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia—bonded over their love for Fats Waller. Influenced also by such greats as Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday, they began playing open mic nights and small gigs and by 2011, they headlined Midsummer Night Swing at New York’s Lincoln Center.
The Hot Sardines’ self-titled debut album, named by iTunes as one of the best jazz albums of 2014, spent more than a year on the Billboard Jazz Chart, debuting in the top 10 alongside Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. The accolades began pouring in for the band: Downbeat called The Hot Sardines “one of the most delightfully energetic bands on New York’s ‘hot’ music scene,” while The London Times praised their “crisp musicianship” and “immaculate and witty showmanship,” declaring them “simply phenomenal.”
“We found ourselves in the perfect place at the perfect time,” says Evan. “As we explored this 100 year-old jazz, we began to look at it as a journey forward, not so much as a look back. This is music for today, not a museum piece.”

About this Event
TORRES
BANDCAMP
SPOTIFY
A person whose words are so potent that they cause the people and beings around them to vibrate is said to have a “silver tongue.” It’s apt, then, that Mackenzie Scott-who has spent the 2010s making boundary—pushing pop music under her TORRES moniker—has chosen to call her fourth album, and first release on Merge, just that.
Recorded at O’Deer in Brooklyn, New York, Silver Tongue is a full-scale realization of the world Scott has created over TORRES’ last few albums. Even when singing in more subdued tones, Scott’s voice is fervent, her lyrics stirring and unyielding as she draws from both the divine and the everyday.
It’s also the first TORRES record produced solely by Scott. After having shared production duties on her first three albums, the latter two alongside PJ Harvey collaborator Rob Ellis, she found the process liberating: “I made exactly the record I want, and it feels very ‘me.’”
Silver Tongue fastidiously chronicles the impulses that make up desire—from the dreamy first blushes of infatuation through the slightly terrifying wonder that accompanies connection with another. In between, Scott wrestles with the highs and lows of what “being in love” might mean over heady guitars and swirling synths. This is immediate in album opener “Good Scare,” which details the courage one finds when chasing the person of one’s dreams: “When you said you couldn’t swing it, you gave me a good scare for a minute there / I had never seen that look from you before / You were eyeing all the exits.”
While potent vocal hooks punctuate songs like the sparkling “Dressing America,” which combines New Wave glitter with hovering frustration, and the brooding “Good Grief,” which gently pokes at the idea of fetishized sadness, the knottiness lurking underneath reflects Scott’s real-time processing of her emotions while making the record.
“I was trying to make sense of things as they were happening to me,” she says. “It’s more difficult for me to examine something clearly enough to write about it when I’m in the middle of it, and yet that’s what it demands. You’ve got to see things for what they are if you want to make truthful observations about them. When you’re writing about the past, you can manipulate it a little bit to fit a narrative, clean it up some—there’s less room for bending the present.” This desire to stick to the truth manifests in her lyrics, from the exposed longing of “Records of Your Tenderness” (“I can’t get one word in front of the other / You know my mind’s an overgrown orchard / Oh, I do not want this to be over”) to “Two of Everything,” the blistering letter to her lover’s lover (“To the one sharing my lover’s bed / Do you hold her when she sleeps / Does she also call you Baby / You should know she calls me Baby”)
Silver Tongue’s musical world is vast and at times seemingly infinite. Edge-of-the-world synths add gravity to the vulnerability of “Two of Everything,” and refracted guitars offer a gnarled counterpoint to Scott’s increased determination at the end of “Last Forest.” On “Gracious Day,” one of TORRES ’ most forthright love songs, Scott’s voice hovers over a starlit landscape in a way that transcends the mundane and enters the otherworldly as she sings, “Gracious day / You moved in like a wave of quiet grace / No surprise / Honey, I’m gonna love you all my life.”
TORRES’ music has long navigated the space between the physical and the metaphysical, and Silver Tongue faces that conflict head-on, examining the ways in which the actions of others can stir up deep-seated feelings and seemingly alter the space in which one exists.
