ABOUT THE ASHES AND THE STAR-CURSED KING:
Love is a sacrifice at the altar of power.

In the wake of the Kejari, everything Oraya once thought to be true has been destroyed. A prisoner in her own kingdom, grieving the only family she ever had, and reeling from a gutting betrayal, she no longer even knows the truth of her own blood. She’s left only with one certainty: she cannot trust anyone, least of all Raihn.

Raihn’s own nobles are none too eager to accept a Turned king, especially one who was once a slave. And the House of Blood digs their claws into the kingdom, threatening to tear it apart from the inside.

When Raihn offers Oraya a secret alliance, taking the deal is her only chance at reclaiming her kingdom–and gaining her vengeance against the lover who betrayed her. But to do so, she’ll need to harness a devastating ancient power, intertwined with her father’s greatest secrets.

But with enemies closing in on all sides, nothing is as it seems. As she unravels her past and faces her future, Oraya finds herself forced to choose between the bloody reality of seizing power—and the devastating love that could be her downfall.

ABOUT Carissa Broadbent:

Carissa Broadbent has been concerning teachers and parents with mercilessly grim tales since she was roughly nine years old. Since then, her stories have gotten (slightly) less depressing and (hopefully a lot?) more readable. Today, she writes novels that blend epic fantasy plots with a heaping dose of romance. She lives with her husband, her son, and one perpetually skeptical cat in Rhode Island.

About this event
IN-PERSON
Join us for an evening celebrating the life and work of Black lesbian and feminist writers Alexis De Veaux and Cheryl Clarke who will join Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Schomburg Center Scholar in Residence and curator, Briona Simone Jones in conversation followed by a book signing.

The Pleasure of Rebellion exhibition gathers the work of Black lesbian and feminist writers Alexis De Veaux and Cheryl Clarke and attends to their aesthetic, artistic, and political contributions to Black Studies. This exhibition maps Clarke and De Veaux’s intellectual odysseys to demonstrate how these Black queer theorists provide a critical lens to scrutinize the contours of eroticism and freedom. Through the work of Clarke and De Veaux, The Pleasure of Rebellion insists that we can move from understanding the archive as a morgue and colonial machination to valuing it as an animate reservoir by honoring the work of the living.exhibition will be on view all evening. The exhibition is curated by Briona Simone Jones, Ph.D., a 2023-24 Schomburg Center Scholar in Residence and Curator of The Pleasure of Rebellion. As the 2024 growing season gets into full swing, join us at Farm. One to learn how on Earth to start your own seedlings in this no-experience-necessary community workshop.

We’ll be led by members of the Lower East Side Cactus and Succulent Society in a step-by-step demonstration of how to prepare your growing medium, sow your seeds, and create habitable environments for your seedlings from germination through the first few months of growth.

All materials will be provided including seeds, growing media, pots, and libations. Workshop participants will go home with their very own rare plant starter kit packed with a variety of seeds from 12 different cactus and succulent species.

Founded in 2019, the Lower East Side Cactus and Succulent Society is downtown New York’s leading group of xerophiles and rare plant experts. They host URL and IRL meetings, lead workshops, organize habitat explorations, and are currently working on a community-theatre adaptation of The Matrix. Excelsior.

In conversation with Cassandra Khaw

Award winning author Vajra Chandrasekera (author of Greenlight staff favorite The Saint of Bright Doors) presents Rakesfall, a groundbreaking, standalone science fiction epic about two souls bound together from here until the ends of time. Tracing two souls through endless lifetimes, Rakesfall is a virtuosic exploration of what stories can be. As the two main characters reincarnate ever deeper into the future, they will chase the edge of human possibility, in a dark science fiction epic unlike anything you’ve read before.
