Underground & Unapologetic: A Black Queer Zine Workshop Embrace the lasting ephemera of Black queer history with this zine-making workshop at the Museum! @ Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art 26 Wooster Street New York, NY 10013 United States

About this event
This hands-on artmaking gathering invites participants to reclaim and reimagine Black queer histories through DIY publishing, working with form, imagery, and composition while activating works from the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Arts expansive library archive. Led by multidisciplinary artist Damien Davis and Gabriel Boyd, we will engage with the functions and processes of zine-making and information-sharing through time, using the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, and the Culture Wars of the 1990s as key historic points of departure. This hands-on session delves into the ways Black queer artists, activists, and writers have shaped history, often against the odds. Together, we take our cue from the influence of Black artmakers and historical figures, and create one-of-a-kind works from an array of print materials.

Participants will have access to curated research materials, including writings, imagery, and archival documents, to inspire their own zine creations. In addition, attendees are encouraged to bring their own archival materials—family photos, letters, newspaper clippings, or any personal/historical documents they wish to incorporate into their work. This workshop is a space for exploration, storytelling, and creative resistance. Attendees do not need any prior experience to take part, nor do they need to create a final product.

What’s a zine?

A zine is a self-published, DIY publication. The practice of zine-making is rooted in DIY culture and activism, and is a major method for queering publishing, with a focus on distribution over profit. As a result, zines have a rich history within queer, LGBTQIA+ communities and movements, requiring few resources (paper, scissors, glue, and a photocopier) for making radical art, information, and stories widely accessible.

About the Artists

Damien Davis is a Newark-based artist whose work recontextualizes cultural symbols to explore identity and history. His distinctive visual language has been featured in exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Davis has participated in notable residencies, including the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and Project for Empty Space. He has received awards such as the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Community Engagement Grant. A dedicated educator, he currently teaches at Purchase College (SUNY). Davis holds a BFA and an MA in Visual Arts Administration from New York University.

Gabriel Boyd is a Black trans artist based in New York and a current student at SUNY Purchase. Working primarily with found materials and performance, their practice explores Black cultural signifiers, such as Black hair and hair care products to interrogate how Black experiences interact with the virtual. They are excited to assist at the Leslie Lohman Museum of Art, helping curate a making experience that weaves together Black queer past, present, and future.

About this event
Event lasts 1 hour
Dr. Elizabeth Rosen Stone, independent scholar and Andrew W. Mellon Senior Fellow in Art History at the Metropolitan Museum, discusses Gandhara art which developed following Alexander the Great’s invasion of the Indian subcontinent. There will be fascinating visual references to the Classical world throughout the Buddhist art of Nagarjunakonda and related sites in Southern India from the first century BCE through the third century CE. The resulting rich tradition fused Greco-Roman art with Indian Buddhist narrative sculpture questioning the idea that the art of southern India is indigenous.

Entry to this event is not guaranteed with Eventbrite reservation. Please arrive no more than 15-20 minutes before the event start time. Seating is first-come, first-served.

Please cancel your reservation if you are unable to attend.

New York Times bestselling author Cory Doctorow returns to the world of Red Team Blues to bring us the origin story of Martin Hench and the most powerful new tool for crime ever invented: the personal computer.

The year is 1986. The city is San Francisco. Here, Martin Hench will invent the forensic accountant–what a bounty hunter is to people, he is to money–but for now he’s an MIT dropout odd-jobbing his way around a city still reeling from the invention of a revolutionary new technology that will change everything about crime forever, one we now take completely for granted.

When Marty finds himself hired by Silicon Valley PC startup Fidelity Computing to investigate a group of disgruntled ex-employees who’ve founded a competitor startup, he quickly realizes he’s on the wrong side. Marty ditches the greasy old guys running Fidelity Computing without a second thought, utterly infatuated with the electric atmosphere of Computing Freedom. Located in the heart of the Mission, this group of brilliant young women found themselves exhausted by the predatory business practices of Fidelity Computing and set out to beat them at their own game, making better computers and driving Fidelity Computing out of business. But this optimistic startup, fueled by young love and California-style burritos, has no idea the depth of the evil they’re seeking to unroot or the risks they run.

In this company-eat-company city, Martin and his friends will be lucky to escape with their lives.

More than 100 recipes for sweet treats from New York Times bestselling author and Food Network star Molly Yeh’s cozy kitchen on a sugar beet (and wheat!) farm, to be shared in potlucks, set on the counter for family snacking, or scarfed down in one sitting.

Molly Yeh’s favorite childhood memories are of being in the kitchen with her family, dipping into a tub of sugar to make rugelach, homemade Oreos, and more, so it’s only fitting she married into a family who farm sugar beets. She and her husband, Nick, live and work on the Hagen Farm in East Grand Forks, MN, on the North Dakota border, which has been in operation since the 1870s, and farming sugar beets since the 1930s. In the decade plus since she moved to the farm, Molly has spent her time completely immersed in the world of sugar, both during her work hours, first as a baker and now as a recipe developer, bakery owner, and Food Network personality, and in her home life, running her business and family against the backdrop of the seasonal needs of a thriving farm.

Molly speaks fluent sugar, so recipes for sweets come naturally—as does her drive to perfect them in flavor, texture, and ease of making. The recipes include a mix of church cookbook–inspired gems, from-scratch versions of nostalgic sweets, and new concoctions with flavors drawn from her Asian and Jewish backgrounds as well as beloved Midwestern traditions she’s adopted from her husband’s family and the local community.

As with all of Molly’s books, Sweet Farm! will include recipes that are both homey and excitingly original, charming and funny stories of family life built around the agricultural year, and beautiful photos and illustrations. Home bakers around the country will love Molly’s peek into her life—muddy boots, sticky fingers, and all!

Molly Yeh is the Emmy Award– and James Beard Foundation Award–nominated star of Food Network’s series Girl Meets Farm. She is the author of the New York Times bestselling Home Is Where the Eggs Are and Molly on the Range, which was the winner of the IACP Judge’s Choice Award in 2016, and is the creator of the lifestyle food blog my name is yeh, Saveur’s 2015 “Food Blog of the Year.” She was named to Forbes’ 30 under 30 list and The Forward 50 for 2017 and was a Glamour Woman of the Year in Food in 2019. Outside the kitchen, Molly is a Juilliard-trained classical percussionist and has performed with ensembles around the world. She lives on a farm on the North Dakota-Minnesota border with her fifth-generation farmer husband, Nick, their two daughters, and a little flock of chickens.

Julia Turshen is the bestselling author of Now & Again, Feed the Resistance, Small Victories, and Simply Julia and has coauthored numerous other cookbooks, including the James Beard Award-winning In Bibi’s Kitchen. She hosts the IACP-nominated podcast Keep Calm and Cook On and has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Vogue, Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, and Saveur, and more. She sits on the Kitchen Cabinet Advisory Board for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, is the founder of Equity At The Table (EATT), an inclusive digital directory of women and non-binary individuals in food, and is a member of God’s Love We Deliver’s Culinary Council. She lives in the Hudson Valley with her spouse, Grace, and their many pets.

“Possessed.” “Deviant.” “Sick.” Historically, colonial regimes attempted, gained, and maintained control over cuir/kuir/queer, trans, Black, and Indigenous people by pathologizing them along with their relationships—to the land, to the nonhuman, to one another. The rich sexual and gender diversity of the many cultures of Abya Yala (Kuna for the entirety of the Americas) was unintelligible to Western knowledge frameworks. To justify acts of violent dispossession and extraction, they characterized specific ways of existing as unnatural. These narratives have wound through legal, religious, cultural, political, and ideological structures in Abya Yala since 1492, and—as ficciones patógenas (pathogenic fictions)—they shape our understandings of bodies, land, culture, and power today.

The artists in this exhibition explore how ficciones patógenas have been perpetuated and embodied, occluding local, non-Western, and Indigenous ways of being and knowing. In their 2018 book, ficciones patógenas, Guaxu trans writer, activist, and participating artist Duen Neka’hen Sacchi traces their own medical history through Western regimes of bodily conformity. The wounding and suturing of Neka’hen’s body (and other nonconforming bodies), based on false notions of order and reproduction, echoes the violent reshaping of the “Indies,” which inextricably bound biology to nationhood. Through hybrid practices that draw from Indigenous, colonial, and contemporary images and strategies, the artists propose ways in which land and bodies exist as sites of resistance and transformation.

Organized by Stamatina Gregory, Head Curator/Director of Exhibitions and Collections and Georgie Sánchez.

Frequently asked questions
Can I switch the ticket I bought for a different day?
Purchase your ticket(s) carefully. We do not allow exchanges of ticket for a different day. The day for which you bought your ticket is the day you are allowed entry.

How does timed entry work?
The time block on your ticket is the timeframe which you are allowed to enter the market. You may stay in the market past the timeframe, but once you leave, we do not allow re-entry.

I never received my ticket.
Eventbrite sends the ticket to the email address that is associated with your Eventbrite account. Many people have an Eventbrite account linked to an old email and the tickets get sent there. Please check all your emails for tickets before emailing our customer support team.

My ticket looks like it is for Friday, March 14th but I bought it for a different day.
Your ticket confirmation will show the date as Friday, March 14th because that is when the market starts. However, your actual ticket will have the date of the ticket you purchased. Please check your ticket carefully before reaching out to our customer support team

Historically, there has been a line to enter, with the longest wait times at open but significantly decreasing throughout the day. For our Spring market and moving forward, all tickets will have timed entry to cut down on wait times.
