About this event
ENGLISH
Join us for the opening celebration of ficciones patógenas.
“Possessed.” “Deviant.” “Sick.” Historically, colonial regimes attempted, gained, and maintained control over cuir/kuir/queer, trans, Black, and Indigenous people by pathologizing them along with their relationships—to the land, to the nonhuman, to one another. The rich sexual and gender diversity of the many cultures of Abya Yala (Kuna for the entirety of the Americas) was unintelligible to Western knowledge frameworks. To justify acts of violent dispossession and extraction, they characterized specific ways of existing as unnatural. These narratives have wound through legal, religious, cultural, political, and ideological structures in Abya Yala since 1492, and—as ficciones patógenas (pathogenic fictions)—they shape our understandings of bodies, land, culture, and power today.
The artists in this exhibition explore how ficciones patógenas have been perpetuated and embodied, occluding local, non-Western, and Indigenous ways of being and knowing. In their 2018 book, ficciones patógenas, Guaxu trans writer, activist, and participating artist Duen Neka’hen Sacchi traces their own medical history through Western regimes of bodily conformity. The wounding and suturing of Neka’hen’s body (and other nonconforming bodies), based on false notions of order and reproduction, echoes the violent reshaping of the “Indies,” which inextricably bound biology to nationhood. Through hybrid practices that draw from Indigenous, colonial, and contemporary images and strategies, the artists propose ways in which land and bodies exist as sites of resistance and transformation.
Organized by Stamatina Gregory, Head Curator/Director of Exhibitions and Collections and Georgie Sánchez.

Carlos Arias, Felipe Baeza, Seba Calfuqueo, Javier Cardona Otero, Colectivo Ayllu (álex aguirre sánchez, iki yos piña narváez, kimy/leticia rojas miranda, lucrecia masson córdoba, francisco godoy vega), Mandorilyn Crawford, Gian Cruz, Frau Diamanda, Venuca Evanán, Camilo Godoy, Carlos Martiel, Lulu V. Molinares, Lizette Nin, Rio Paraná (Duen Neka’hen Sacchi, Mag de Santo), Duen Neka’hen Sacchi, Javi Vargas Sotomayor, Lucía Egaña Rojas and Ju Salgueiro, Luis Fernando Zapata
Accessibility
Located at 26 Wooster Street, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art strives to provide a welcoming environment to all visitors. All galleries are wheelchair-accessible, and a single-occupancy accessible restroom is located behind the visitor services desk: all restrooms are gender-neutral. Large print didactics are available.

Frequently asked questions
Can I switch the ticket I bought for a different day?
Purchase your ticket(s) carefully. We do not allow exchanges of ticket for a different day. The day for which you bought your ticket is the day you are allowed entry.
How does timed entry work?
The time block on your ticket is the timeframe which you are allowed to enter the market. You may stay in the market past the timeframe, but once you leave, we do not allow re-entry.
I never received my ticket.
Eventbrite sends the ticket to the email address that is associated with your Eventbrite account. Many people have an Eventbrite account linked to an old email and the tickets get sent there. Please check all your emails for tickets before emailing our customer support team.
My ticket looks like it is for Friday, March 14th but I bought it for a different day.
Your ticket confirmation will show the date as Friday, March 14th because that is when the market starts. However, your actual ticket will have the date of the ticket you purchased. Please check your ticket carefully before reaching out to our customer support team
Is there a line to get in?
Historically, there has been a line to enter, with the longest wait times at open but significantly decreasing throughout the day. For our Spring market and moving forward, all tickets will have timed entry to cut down on wait times.
Can I buy tickets at the door?
We cannot guarantee ticket availability at the door. Once the event is sold out, it’s sold out!
Can I re-enter with my ticket if I leave?
Unfortunately, we don’t allow re-entry. Once you leave the market, you are not allowed back in.
Is there parking available at the event venue?
Only street parking is available around the venue.
If I purchase a big piece of furniture, is there help to carry it out of the venue?
Pick-up schedules can be coordinated with the furniture sellers directly, however items must be picked up during market hours unless specially scheduled with the seller. For extra help, we recommend using Lugg.
Do you allow outside food and drink?
Outside food and drink is not allowed. We will have pastry and coffe available for purchase inside.
What is your pet policy?
Well-behaved dogs are always welcome!
What is your refund policy?
Purchase your ticket(s) carefully. We do not offer refunds.
Where can I find additional assistance or information regarding tickets?
For any questions or issues related to ticket purchases, feel free to contact our customer support team via email at info@normalnewyork.com.

ABOUT RETREAT:
Liz Dawson weaves through a crowd with the ease of a tropical breeze, moving seamlessly through elite circles, sparking instant connections and making every new acquaintance feel like an intimate friend. She’s clever, smooth, and confident—qualities that make her a brilliant serial con artist.
Isabelle Beresford is strikingly beautiful, obscenely wealthy, and the new owner of Casa Esmerelda, a fabulous villa on the Mexican coast—attributes that make her the perfect mark. When she offers Liz a job handling the installation of a piece of art in her otherwise vacant home, Liz can’t resist the allure of a beach retreat. She longs for a reset, a chance to finally shed the grip of her addiction to the conning game.
But when Liz, with her lush dark hair and intense green eyes, is mistaken for Isabelle herself, Liz can’t help effortlessly slipping into the socialite’s identity. The transition is so easeful, it almost feels like fate. But just who is Isabelle Beresford really, and why does she seem to have abandoned this stunning life of hers?
As Liz insinuates herself deeper into the dazzling—and deceptive—world of the Punta Mita resort community, she draws closer to the dangers surrounding the real Isabelle. Dangers that may have already ensnared Liz, too. This might not be the con of her life—but the con that ends it.

ABOUT SUMMER IN THE CITY (B&N Exclusive Edition):
Twenty-seven-year-old screenwriter Elle has the chance of a lifetime to write a big-budget movie set in New York City. The only problem? She’s had writer’s block for months, and her screenplay is due at the end of the summer.
In a desperate attempt at inspiration, Elle ends up back in the city she swore she would never return to, in an apartment she could never afford (floor-to-ceiling windows, skyline views, and a new coffee shop to haunt included). It’s the perfect place to write her screenplay…until she realizes her new neighbor is tech “Billionaire Bachelor” Parker Warren, her stairwell hookup from two years ago. It’s been a lovers-to-enemies situation ever since.
When seeing him again turns into a full night of hate-fueled writing, Elle realizes her enemy/twisted muse might just be the key to finishing her screenplay… if she can stand being around her polar opposite. She writes anonymously, and he’s on the cover of every business magazine. He frequents fancy red carpeted events, and she doesn’t like leaving her emotional support five block radius.
One summer. One wall apart. He needs to fake a buzzy relationship during his company’s precarious acquisition. She needs to write a movie around a list of NYC locations. Both need a break from their unrelenting schedules, and a chance to rediscover the skyscraper glimmering, pizza crusted, sunlit charms of the city.
Summers always end, and so will this agreement. It’s all pretend. Promise.
Until it isn’t.
