2024 Winter Lecture: Welles Bosworth – Architect of Untermyer Gardens, Kykuit, and More

Our 2024 Winter Lecture features Untermyer Gardens Conservancy President, Stephen F. Byrns, who will illustrate the meteoric career of the American architect, William Welles Bosworth.

William Welles Bosworth’s architecture career was powered largely by his close relationship to John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Bosworth’s design work at the house and garden of Kykuit, the Rockefeller family home, led to major projects for the ATT headquarters in New York City and the campus of M.I.T. in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It also led to the design of the garden at Greystone, Samuel Untermyer’s home, which some considered the most spectacular garden in America.

Learn how Bosworth, an intellectually and aesthetically gifted architect, fused classical architecture with modern ideas.

The lecture will take place at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, 921 Madison Avenue, NYC, with a reception following the lecture.

A recording of the lecture will be available starting March 12, tickets sold separately.

For one night only, we’re reimagining Anna May Wong’s jazz age bungalow inside the walls of Red Pavilion to celebrate the launch of Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong, a new biography of the first Asian American movie star by Katie Gee Salisbury.

As Wong’s fame and allure grew in Hollywood during the 1920s, she often entertained fellow performers, artists, writers, and other bohemians in the bungalow behind her father’s laundry. “Men and women from the world of art and letters seek her out,” Helen Carlisle writes in Motion Picture Magazine. “Many a celebrity has visited the little house where she serves tea in a truly ceremonious manner.”

Party highlights will include:

A reading from Not Your China Doll by author Katie Gee Salisbury
Book signing
Tarot readings by Helen
Tunes by DJ YiuYiu 瑶瑶 of Chinatown Records
Tea served by Tea Arts & Culture

Wix Playground and AIGA NY invite you to pause and take a breath at Wix Playground. Build community and dive into self-care while we provide the light drinks, snacks and drawing materials. Creative prompts will be facilitated by Hyesu Lee – an illustrator, artist and educator who recently launched her book “Self Love Club”. Hyesu will also share a presentation on her work, process, but also what it means to slow down, love yourself, and remind yourself you are enough.

After the event you’re invited to a signing of Hyesu’s book Self-Love Club: Real Talk and Reminders for Discovering that We’re Enough. A limited number of copies will be available for purchase.

About Hyesu Lee

I was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. And I would be proud to say I’m fresh off the boat—although I’m not as fresh as I used to be anymore! I lived in Seoul until my mid-twenties, and went to study abroad in the UK, where my journey began.

I graduated from the University of Arts London with a BA in Illustration, then moved to New York City where I earned an MFA from the School of Visual Arts. I’ve been based in Brooklyn and going about my life as an illustrator, artist, muralist, comic artist and educator.

My art has always been driven by a curiosity about how people connect. I was very shy growing up, so I never knew how best to communicate with those around me. But drawing people—observing them, and learning about them—that’s my way of connecting. Art, after all, has no language barrier.

I’ve been collaborating with various clients across many platforms all over the world – creating illustrations for brands, magazines, public murals, and packaging.

My belief is that anything warm and cheerful is contagious.

This event is sponsored by Wix Playground
Wix Playground is powered by the Wix.com design guild. We’re dedicated to celebrating creative expression and supporting the creative growth of emerging designers everywhere, through collaborations, events, and experiential learning.

WHAT IS A ONE-DAY CHOIR?

Gaia Music Collective’s One-Day Choir series is an opportunity to sing in a choir for one day only. A celebration of song and the connective power of singing in harmony. An opportunity to build community, make some new friends, and raise our powerfully diverse voices as one.

No auditions. No commitment. No need for perfection.

Just the joy of creating something bigger than ourselves with a room full of beautiful humans!

For each choir, we pick a single piece of music to rehearse and sing our hearts out to. In our time together, we’ll:

Play some fun singing games, warmups, & connection games
Work through the piece section by section
Break down the lyrics & emotions at play in the song
Shape some key musical moments
& Record some casual rehearsal videos of the piece to share with the greater Gaia community
Whether you’re a vocal ensemble veteran or have never sung in a group before, you are welcome here – all experience levels are valued in Gaia Music Collective!

OUR SONG THIS TIME AROUND

Join us as we explore the smooth melodies and jazzy harmonies of the Beegees’ “How Deep is Your Love”. This classic tune is one of resilience, perseverance, and deep…love! Our version will be arranged by Gaia’s own Kenter Davies, and will be heavily inspired by the gorgeous r&b/soul rendition by PJ Morton and YEBBA. We invite you to play and explore with us as we dive into this feel-good song that has stood the test of time.

Check out the cover by PJ Morton and YEBBA song here:

LEARNING THE MUSIC

Sheet music and vocal recordings of each part will be available as learning resources before the event, and our collective goal is to practice the parts ahead of time so that we might come into the gathering with ! This way we can spend our time together really diving into the richness of music-making, rather than trying to teach the parts one by one. We don’t need to know our parts by heart by any means (and you defffinitely don’t have to memorize it), but the stronger we are in our parts coming in, the more we’ll be able to really dig into the fun stuff!

(If this style of learning isn’t your cup of tea, we have other group singing events where you don’t need to prepare at all! Check out our CircleSinging gatherings and House Shows.)

LED & FACILITATED BY:

Kenter Davies (he/him) is a music educator, vocal arranger and singer/songwriter who lives in Brooklyn, NY. He is currently pursuing an MA in music education at Hunter College, which he plans to use to create joyous, accessible, and supportive spaces for people of all ages to engage with music and create freely. He believes that music is within every person, and that the world needs more opportunities for casual music-making free of judgment and perfectionism. Kenter is thrilled to be facilitating one-night choir events for Gaia over the summer, and cannot wait to see this community grow and change the lives of those within it, just as it has changed his life.

PHYSICAL ACCESSIBILITY:

2 story walk down to the basement with handrails.
Narrow doors & walkways.
Limited seating available (metal folding chairs)

CANCELLATION POLICY

Gaia Music Collective is a creative community based in Brooklyn, NYC. This project was born out of a desire to create more spaces for people to find expression, connection, growth, & release through collaborative music-making – a place where folks feel safe to make music free of judgment or expectation, and to make new friends as our weird, beautiful, authentic selves.

All are welcome in this community, regardless of age, race, gender, class, religion, sexual orientation, ability, national origin, language, or musical ability. All we ask is that you bring an open mind, a desire to connect, and a willingness to leave judgment of self & others at the door.

Here at Gaia, we believe that music-making – and making that music in community & collaboration with other people – is a fundamental human need, and this project seeks to build space for that in a day and age when it is so often hard to find.

Gaia seeks to break down the divisions between performer & audience and craft experiences where we are ALL part of the music-making, while also offering a network & platform for local artists & creatives to connect with other artists, activate their creativity through collaboration, and engage their work with other musical minds.

In short – we’re here to sing, to play, to connect, to grow, and to have a good time!

Love, Compassion, and the Future of Jewish Life
A conversation with Rep. Jamie Raskin and Rabbi Shai Held, moderated by Abigail Pogrebin

Tuesday, March 26th, 7:00 pm ET

Online and in person at
B’nai Jeshrun
257 West 88th St.
New York, NY

What is Judaism ultimately about? What vision of the good life does it offer us, and why might that vision be especially crucial during these dark times? Join Rep. Jamie Raskin and Rabbi Shai Held for a freewheeling discussion in celebration of Rabbi Held’s new book, “Judaism Is About Love: Recovering the Heart of Jewish Life.”

Their conversation will be moderated by Abigail Pogrebin.

Book selling and signing available after the talk.

Rabbi Shai Held, one of the most influential Jewish thinkers and leaders in America, is President and Dean of the Hadar Institute in New York City. Rabbi Held received the prestigious Covenant Award for Excellence in Jewish Education, and has been named multiple times to Newsweek’s list of the most influential rabbis in America and to the Forward’s list of the most prominent Jews in the world. He is the author of Abraham Joshua Heschel: The Call of Transcendence (2013) and The Heart of Torah: Essays on the Weekly Torah Portion (2017).

Congressman Jamie Raskin is the U.S. Representative for Maryland’s 8th Congressional District and the Ranking Member on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability. He served as the Lead House Manager in the second Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, which ended with a 57-43 vote to convict the president for inciting a violent insurrection against the government to overthrow the 2020 presidential election. Raskin also served on the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol and served three terms on the House Judiciary, Oversight and Administration Committees. He served two terms on the Rules Committee. Prior to Congress, Raskin was a three-term State Senator in Maryland and a professor of constitutional law for more than a quarter-century at American University Washington College of Law. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, where he served as an Editor of the Harvard Law Review. He has authored several books, including We the Students, the Washington Post best-seller Overruling Democracy: The Supreme Court versus the American People, and the New York Times number #1 best-seller Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth and the Trials of American Democracy (2022).

Abigail Pogrebin is the author of “My Jewish Year:18 Holidays, One Wondering Jew” — a National Jewish Book Award finalist, and “Stars of David: Prominent Jews Talk About Being Jewish.” She’s written for The Atlantic, The Forward, and Tablet, and moderates conversations for The Streicker Center and Jewish Broadcasting Service.

For this Dance Historian Is In, Jane Pritchard and Diana Byer look at the early careers of Frederick Ashton, Antony Tudor and Agnes de Mille in the 1930s when they were based at the Mercury Theatre in London with performance, film and images. Their formative years training, choreographing and dancing together at Marie Rambert’s Ballet Club set the stage for the groundbreaking work of their later years.

Jane Pritchard is the Curator of Dance at the Victoria and Albert Museum. She previously served as Archivist for Rambert Dance Company and English National Ballet and created the Contemporary Dance Trust Archive. Diana Byer founded New York Theatre Ballet (NYTB) and NYTB School in 1979 and served as the company’s Artistic Director until 2021, during which time they regularly performed dances by Ashton, Tudor and de Mille. Byer remains Director of NYTB School and was co-curator for the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts’ programs Agnes de Mille and the Female Narrative and Agnes de Mille and the Intrinsic American.

For more than 10 years, The Dance Historian Is In at the Library for the Performing Arts has highlighted a diverse range of dancers and choreographers across history. This series began when archivist and historian David Vaughan started volunteering at the Jerome Robbins Dance Division. Vaughan began a monthly program showing his favorite dance films from the Division’s extensive collection, through which he unearthed many treasures, and helped acquire even more. Vaughan continued the series until the end of his life. Today, we honor his memory and work by inviting dance historians from all over the world each month to carry on the tradition of highlighting dance history through the Dance Division’s moving image collection.
