Mike set a team record with his crewmates for the most cumulative spacewalking time in a single space shuttle mission, and he was also the first person to tweet from space. Mike received his BS from Columbia University and his PhD from MIT. He currently lives in New York City where he is a professor at Columbia, Senior Space Advisor at the Intrepid Museum, an expert television commentator, and an in-demand keynote speaker. He also had a recurring role as himself on The Big Bang Theory television series.
About the Book:
Experience all 135 NASA space shuttle missions ever flown through the words of the astronauts themselves in this spectacularly illustrated volume. With more than 600 photos from the NASA archives, this guide is perfect for fans of space history and spaceflight.
NASA’s space shuttle was the world’s first reusable spacecraft, accomplishing many firsts and inspiring generations across its 30-year lifespan as America’s iconic spaceship. In Space Shuttle Stories, shuttle astronaut Tom Jones interviewed more than 130 fellow astronauts for personal vignettes from each mission, complemented by their written accounts for all 135 space shuttle missions, from Columbia’s maiden flight in 1981 to the final launch of Atlantis in 2011. The book is a major contribution to the historical record of a momentous era of spaceflight, and isa definitive oral history that captures the importance, wonder, and exhilaration of the Space Shuttle era.
Each mission profile includes:
An astronaut narrative that immerses the readers in their personal mission experience
Data about the mission, crew, launch, landing, duration, and highlights
Captivating photographs rarely seen by the public
The program is also supported, in part, by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

About this event
Pioneer Works is excited to present Beverly Glenn-Copeland & Friends: The Salon Evening in our Main Hall on Monday, September 30, 2024. The Salon Evening is a program that will feature performances by Beverly Glenn-Copeland with an assortment of different collaborations from the artist’s friends and family, including Elizabeth Glenn-Copeland and special guests to be announced.
PLEASE NOTE: Upon Artist’s request, face masks are required for this performance. Pioneer Works will provide masks to anyone who does not have one upon arrival.
About the Artist:
Beverly Glenn-Copeland
Born in Philadelphia in 1944, Glenn (as he likes to be called) grew up in a house where his father practiced piano for five hours a night, making Bach, Chopin and Mozart his ‘cradle music’. He moved to Montreal in 1961 to study classical voice at McGill University. Faced with challenges relating to his race, gender and sexual orientation, he dropped out of university before completing his degree, picked up a guitar and started writing music.
In 1970 Glenn-Copeland recorded two albums. The first, part of CBC’s ‘Transcription Series,’ was titled Beverly Copeland and was a virtuosic showcase of classical and jazz vocal stylings, poetry, jazz and folk, accompanied by some of the best players of the time. Original pressings of that album now fetch thousands of dollars. Six months later Glenn-Copeland made a studio album with many of those same musicians, including the brilliant Lenny Breau, titled Beverly Glenn-Copeland.
It wasn’t until 1986 that Glenn-Copeland recorded again. Inspired by a profound relationship with nature, an obsession with science fiction and some of the earliest drum-machines and synthesizers, Keyboard Fantasies was born. Self-released on cassette, it sold less than 100 copies. In 2016, Keyboard Fantasies was discovered by a revered Japanese record-store owner. Word spread and several re-issues were released. One thing led to another and within a year, he began to tour the world with his new band, Indigo Rising. This summer, Glenn-Copeland will release an album of brand-new music called The Ones Ahead, another high point in a career that has defied categorisation. In the early 1990s, Beverly Glenn-Copeland first heard the term ‘transgender’. Armed with the language to describe the way he had felt all his life, he discovered a self-identity which had previously eluded him.
Glenn’s love for working with children and youth has been a constant throughout his life. He appeared as regular guest ‘Beverly’ on the beloved Canadian children’s TV show Mr. Dress-up for nearly 30 years. He wrote for Sesame Street and Shining Times Station. With his wife, Elizabeth, a theatre artist, poet and artist educator, he has completed more than a dozen artist residencies in schools and community settings in New Brunswick and Ontario. They founded and ran a theatre school during their years in Miramichi, N.B. and together they have written four musical plays that speak to the issues of our times. Today they work together entirely in collaboration.
Glenn lives in Hamilton, Ontario with Elizabeth.

ABOUT NOTHING LIKE THE MOVIES (B&N Exclusive Edition):
For a few beautiful months, Wes had his dream girl: strong-willed girl-next-door Liz. But right as the two were about to set off to UCLA to start their freshman year together, tragedy struck. Wes was left dealing with the fallout, which ultimately meant losing Liz in the process.
Flash forward months and months later and Wes and Liz find themselves in college, together. In a healthier place now, Wes knows he broke Liz’s heart when he ended things, but he is determined to make her fall back in love with him.
Wes knows Liz better than anyone, and he has a foolproof plan to win her back with the rom-com worthy big gestures she loves. Only…Liz will have none of it. Wes has to scheme like a rom-com hero to figure out how to see her. Even worse, Liz has a new friend…a guy friend.
Still, Wes won’t give up, adapting his clever plans and going hard to get Liz’s attention and win back her affection. But after his best efforts get him nowhere, Wes is left wondering if their relationship is really over for good.
ABOUT Lynn Painter:
Lynn Painter writes romantic comedies for both teens and adults. She is the author of Better Than the Movies, Mr. Wrong Number, The Do-Over, and Betting on You, as well as being a regular contributor to the Omaha World-Herald. She lives in Nebraska with her husband and pack of wild children, and when she isn’t reading or writing, odds are good she’s guzzling energy drinks and watching rom-coms.

Taste of Sunnyside Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does my ticket include food and drinks?
A: Your ticket includes food and drinks from participating locations.
Q : Are there two check-in locations?
A : Yes, your ticket will show your assigned 1pm check-in location under the elevated 7 train. The two check-in locations are:
40th Street & Queens Boulevard -Lowery Plaza
– OR –
46th Street & Queens Boulevard- Bliss Plaza
Q: How does it actually work?
A: Each bar or restaurant you visit will have exclusive food and/or drink samples you can only get with your printed card – alcohol will require you to have a wristband. There are fun social media games where your participation is voluntary. Most of our participating locations are serving their samples from in front of their storefronts, in open-air format. A printed map will be provided at check in.
Q: Is tipping acceptable or required?
A: Tipping is totally at your discretion but not required. Many of our guests appreciate good service and choose to reward it to the bartenders and servers at the places we visit.
Q: How do we use the event buses?
A: Bus stops will be located along the crawl route and are marked by signs. They are also listed on the printed crawl map you will be provided with at check-in, and on our event website.
Q: Is the crawl accessible?
A: Yes, our buses are ADA-accessible and can transport anyone in a wheelchair.
Q: Can I buy my ticket anywhere else besides online?
A: Our tickets are sold exclusively online on the Sunnyside Shines website and via Eventbrite – www.sunnysideshines.org; Taste of Sunnyside typically sells out in advance. IF any tickets are still available on the day of the event, you will be able to purchase them on-site at 40th Street Lowery Plaza, or 46th Street Bliss Plaza under the elevated 7 train at Queens Boulevard.
BEWARE OF SCAMMERS: Taste of Sunnyside tickets are exclusively sold through Eventbrite. DO NOT purchase from third-party sellers.
Q: What if medical attention is needed for me or my family member?
A: We will have a first aid kit available at the check-in table in the Plaza. In case of emergency Find the nearest Sunnyside bid staff member (we’ll have shirts on!) or communicate in our event chat on WhatsApp and they will direct you accordingly.
Q: Are bathrooms available?
A: Single-stall bathrooms are available in the plazas for participants to use.
Q: Can we bring our own booze or carry cocktails from bar to bar?
A: No! As much as we would love to let you, the law is pretty specific on both of these points. And we will enforce them rigidly! This means no flasks, no bar-noculars, no pocket beers for the road, and no hiding a bottle and then pulling it out at the next bar. No outside alcohol is permitted…period, no exceptions.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Dress appropriately for the weather (if it’s raining we highly recommend raincoats and/or umbrellas). Shoes and shirts are required in all cases.
Q: Which restaurants do we visit?
A: Follow the map/location list provided to you at check-in via your mobile device. You have access to every location but we have curated a few routes that you can use.
Q: I don’t want to be around a bunch of drunken fools, what ages come to your pub crawl events?
A: Good question – obviously all ages are welcome to come to the event (email us to make arrangements if you are bringing children). To drink you must be 21 or older, however our groups will be mixed. Guests of all ages have mingled on the crawls and had a great time.
Q: How long does the crawl actually last?
A: Each crawl will vary based on participating locations. The average crawl will be around 3 or 4 hours. Check your specific event for details. However, if you have a curfew or if you turn into a pumpkin at midnight you are free to leave when necessary. We encourage you to end your evening by dining out or drinking at one of the establishments you’ve discovered during the crawl!
Q: How long (distance) is the Taste of Sunnyside Restaurant Crawl?
A: It depends on which route you take but in most cases the entire restaurant crawl is approximately 2-3 miles total, depending on where you walk, but folks usually only walk short distances between bars and restaurants. While it is far from strenuous, we do recommend that you wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather!
Q: Can we bring cameras or video equipment?
A: Sure!!! This is encouraged! How else are you going to show all your Facebook and Instagram friends how cool you are, and how much fun Taste of Sunnyside is?! Please tag @SunnysideShines in your social media posts!
Q: Does the event happen rain or shine?
A: Yes, our events happen in all-weather unless it’s dangerously windy. If we run into a weather situation, we will advise all ticket buyers and participating restaurants and announce a plan.
Q: Is the crawl route wheelchair accessible?
A: Yes, the crawl is very doable via wheelchair through our sidewalks and crosswalks.
Q: I am running late for the Taste of Sunnyside, will you wait for me?
A: Please give yourself plenty of time to get to the crawl and find parking!
Check-in starts at 1pm and will go on till 3pm. We will have staff at our info table in Bliss Plaza. We encourage you to show up on time so you’re able to fully enjoy the event.
Q: Is there parking near the crawl?
A: There is parking under the elevated 7 train from 42nd to 47th Streets as well as parking along Queens Boulevard and neighboring streets and avenues. Meters are not active on Sunday, so finding a spot can be competitive—plan ahead and build in time for finding parking!
Q: Do we go inside buildings during the crawl?
A: Most of our participating establishments are serving from outside in front of their storefronts; a handful of them will serve from inside.
Q: Do I need to bring an ID?
A: ABSOLUTELY! You must bring a VALID, state-issued ID to the event. You will not be issued our “21+” wristband without ID, and if you plan to stay in the neighborhood after the crawl and dine and drink inside, you will need it.
Q: I can’t make it to the event. Can I get a refund?
A: No. There are absolutely no refunds on ticket purchases to any of our events. Your ticket is transferable to another individual, so long as they present a valid, state-issued ID and your purchased ticket which will have a unique QR code (bar code).
If you have further questions or need assistance, please contact Dirk McCall de Palomá at director@sunnysideshines.org
